Dear Parents
From the Head of Junior School
Over the past week or two Junior School boys have been involved in a great many activities.
This includes Outdoor Education, submitting entries for the Toowoomba Grammar School Art
competition, preparing for the choral section of the Eisteddfod, competing very well in Chess
tournaments, playing sport and even fitting in some class work. There is no doubt boys and
staff experience a busy, rich and fulfilling life at our School.

Outdoor Education Week
Several year levels were involved in Outdoor Education adventures last week. The boys in
Prep and Year 1 participated in an activity day at school on Friday which was an enjoyable
introduction to outdoor activities. The Year 3 and Year 4 boys stayed at Noosa North Shore.
The boys participated in a range of age appropriate activities including rock climbing, archery,
body boarding, beach games, a giant swing and mountain biking.
Front to back: Charlie Barnes, Jett Heffernan Building a raft activity. L-R Douglas Smith,
and Sean Fischer canoeing at the Year 3/4 MacKenzie Buckley, Sam Russell, Lachlan
camp.
Warry and Hugo Searle.
Our Year 5 classes visited Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast for their Outdoor Education
activities. The boys were involved in a range of outdoor experiences including surfing,
kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, a high ropes course and a number of other activities.
The feedback received indicated the boys enjoyed the experience, were appropriately
challenged and returned to school just a little tired.
Marcus Seckler mastering the art of
paddle boarding.
Max Grills contemplating going higher on the
high ropes activity.
The Year 2 boys will camp out on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval next week for their Outdoor
Education experience. Next term, our Year 6 classes will visit Canberra for their week away
from school. I appreciate the wonderful support the boys received from Junior School staff
during Outdoor Education activities. This is a demanding and tiring time for the staff involved,
as they are effectively on duty 24 hours a day while involved in camps. I value this high level
of care and commitment to your sons.
Reports and Interviews
Interim reports will be sent home with the boys next week. These reports provide brief
information about your son’s progress during first term. Reports are well supported by parent
/ teacher interviews that occur over the final two weeks of term. I thank the class teachers for
the time they have devoted to these interviews and for preparing interim reports.
Best wishes for the Easter holidays.

needs more warm clothing, a navy blue or black t-shirt may be worn under the school shirt
and he may also wear his vest under the school jumper. The school tracksuit top is the last
item to be used to keep warm.

Year 6 Leadership Day
Recently, all Year 6 boys attended a leadership day run by Unleashing Personal Potential.
Two gentleman, Pete and Hogan, conducted group leadership activities aimed at expanding
our leadership potential. This included the Jenga challenge with special rules aimed to teach
us that we can achieve more if we remove as many distractions as possible. We also had to
complete a maze as a group but the twist was that we couldn’t speak or we would have to
restart with a new maze.
We learnt that a growth mindset is the key to improving your skills in all aspects of life. We
also found that many people believe they cannot do things because they couldn’t do them
before. This can be related to the fact that fleas can jump up to 100 times their own height.
However, if they are placed in a jar and you place the lid on top, if you leave the jar for 3
days they will not jump higher than the lid once the lid is removed. The same will happen
with their offspring. We also learnt that, “The only limitations are those we place in our own
minds”.
Leaders can only lead once they have someone following them, which is called the first
follower. The first follower is the most important person in this situation as the more followers
the more people will join because others think that it is cool even though it may not be.
The following quotes are from several Year 6 boys about the leadership day.
“You can learn anything” Charlie Randall (6V)
“You can be a leader at any age” Jim MacDonald (6H)
“Rise by lifting others” Patrick Neilson (6H)
“You can lead without a badge” Max Payne-Bailey (6H)
“It is not the badge that makes you a leader” Ted Fawckner (6H)
“Your limitations are not set by what place you come” Sean Benny (6H)
“You can lead with or without a badge” Harrison Pratt (6J)
“We rise by lifting others” Yoseph Bou-Samra (6J)
The Leadership Day was of benefit to all the boys in Year 6.

Junior School Supporters’ Group
It was inspiring to see so many new faces at the coffee morning last Wednesday. We look
forward to the next one scheduled for term two.
The sausage sizzle was well received judging by the boys’ smiling faces. Sincere thanks
from the Committee for the donation of donuts by Heath and Di Ryan (Donut King Kmart)
and John and Lyn Coggan for the poppers. Appreciation to the parents who gave of their
time and also to Jeff Davis for his fabulous BBQ expertise.

Chess News
On Tuesday 7 March, 350 students from around the Toowoomba region attended the
Toowoomba Primary School Chess Championship at Christian Outreach College. The
Junior School had 47 boys from Years 2 to 6 competing on the day. 8 rounds of chess were
played over the day and the strength of chess in the Junior School was on full display once
again. 17 of our boys finished in the top 50 with 9 of those in the top 20. The boys were
eligible for 18 awards on the day and came away with 10.
Oliver Clifford (Year 5) was the overall winner on the day finishing undefeated. Other award
winners were: Praj Gupte (3rd in Year 2), Aiden Zhang (2nd in Year 2), George Clifford (2nd in
year 3), Theo Yevdokimov (1st in Year 3), Jett Heffernan (3rd in Year 4), William Dwan (2nd
in Year 4), Charlie Meyer (1st in Year 5), Jeremy Zuyderwyk (3rd in Year 6) and Noah Taylor
(2nd in Year 6).
An extra special mention must go to George Clifford and Theo Yevdokimov as both of these
boys finished in the top 20 which is an outstanding achievement for boys in Year 3. With
many tournaments still to go this year I am looking forward to an exciting year and many
more positive results to come. Congratulations to all boys who took part on the day.
On Wednesday 15 March, we competed in the Independant Primary School Heads’
Association chess tournament at Concordia Martin Luther campus. We had two teams
competing (Team 1: Noah Taylor, Sam Gladwin, Jeremy Zuyderwyk, John Ridgway. Team
2: Matthew Dunn, Thomas Dixon, Cody Brameld, Max Durkin). The tournament was 4
rounds and at the end of the third round TGS team 1 was leading Glennie Team 1 by half a
point. Final round: TGS 1 vs Glennie 1. TGS needed to win 2 games to secure
victory. Jeremy Zuyderwyk started well with a quick win to make it 1-0. John Ridgway fell
in a tough game and it was 1-1. Sam Gladwin and Noah Taylor also finished with a win,
meaning the title was ours again. TGS 1 finished as champions with 13 points and TGS 2
played some brilliant chess as well to finish equal second with Glennie team 1. The trophy
has returned home for the third year in a row.

Student Free Day – Tribe and Tribe Junior extra rehearsal
As we will miss our regular rehearsal in Week 1 next term, Tribe and Tribe Junior have an
extra rehearsal scheduled on the Student Free Day, Tuesday 18 April. A separate note was
emailed home with details last week. If your son is in Tribe or Tribe Junior, please take note
of this extra rehearsal time.
 Tribe Junior (Years 2-3)
1.00pm - 1.30pm

rehearsed and boys have memorised all of the lyrics.
This extra rehearsal is most important in the lead up to the Eisteddfod. Please email Mrs
Dixon if your son is unable to attend this extra rehearsal.

After School Care
What we have done this past fortnight
This past fortnight we have been extending on the boys’ own interests. Since we have had
some lovely days the boys have been investigating their interests and played in the sandpit
which involved them digging ‘mines’ and building little cities. The boys also enjoyed playing
groups games of red rover, soccer and football. Inside we have been exploring the game of
celebrity heads which was new to a few of the boys and we have been playing battleship to
extend on their strategic ability. We have been crafty and the boys created some wonderful
creations with Popsicle sticks and they have been exploring different flags to go on our
welcome sign.
What we have planned for the next week
Next week we will be involved in outside play and allowing the boys to freely follow their own
interests and providing the opportunity for group games to build on their community spirit.
Inside the boys will be working on their welcome sign and a family tree to help built the feeling
of community.
