Welcome to Worship
13 September 2015
I lift my eyes…
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With Him at
my right hand, I will not be shaken. I lift up my
eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
( Psalm 16:7-9 Psalm 123:1)
1. Pray for the mission expo next weekend.
Pray that attendance and interest will be
good from across all churches. Pray that a
heart for mission support and interest in
mission service will be birthed and
stimulated.
2. Pray for the outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit
upon the church in renewal power and on
the city in revival. Pray that Christians
everywhere will respond to the call of God
to the harvest field in which we already live
and dwell: our neighbourhoods, our
workplaces, our club memberships our
sporting and recreational activities and our
own families.

Martien’s Musings
I have been reflecting on what it means to ‘meet with
God’ both personally and when we are gathered.
We use that kind of language with new believers don’t
we? We “introduce them to Jesus”; we “lead them to
Christ. “ We use language that tells them to “invite Jesus
into their hearts.” It’s actually all very personal and the
words suggest it is about a personal encounter with Jesus
himself, and it is. It is about meeting with the person of
Jesus not about merely giving assent to an idea or
signing off on a truth.
We sometimes use the same kind of language when we
consider our personal relationship with God; “I had a
time with the Lord” and that may be a prayer time or a
devotional time or a music time. Again it is, or should be,
about meeting a person, not just learning or thinking
about Him.
When we gather as a church what is it we come to do?
We too often come to speak about Him, to read about
Him, to sing songs about Him and occasionally to Him.
All of this is fine and good. Do we actually come to meet
Him and what does meeting Him look like?
The scriptures tell us that when we come to Him the living
stone, each of us as living stones will together be built
into a spiritual house for Him. (1 Peter 2:4-5) Together
we form a house where God can and will dwell. This
concept of house is more than a ‘collective Jesus in my
heart.’ This is a house where God’s presence is manifest,
seen, felt, experienced, heard and enjoyed. We know
that each of us are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, who is also
the seal of our salvation (Eph 1:13-14). However,
scripture reminds us that “you (plural) are God’s temple
and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst.” (1 Cor 3:1617). Not just a collective indwelling but also a presence
in the midst of us. Again it points to a presence of God
that is special and different when we gather. What does
meeting God look like? When I meet a person I
exchange words in conversation, I learn new things about
them and about me, and we do things together. I
actually have an experience of encountering them, which
is more than just knowing they are there. Is this what
happens when we meet God who is the creator of the
universe, who is King of Kings, who is Holy, who is Abba
Father?
Martien’s Musings cont...
Do we attend church services and actually meet Him or do
we merely gather to think about Him. Are we awed by His
presence, warmed by His love, are our minds transformed
by listening to His words and by enjoying His company? Are
our minds and emotions and bodies healed by His touch?
Please join with me to make meeting and experiencing God
the hallmark of our gathering. How do we do that? I
believe it comes about when we come to Him open hearted
and open minded with a ‘here am I, take me, touch me,
embrace me, change me trust with no limits’. No limits!

Bible Thought:
God made His light to shine in our hearts to give us
the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the
face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV
Can God be known? From nature we learn something of
His mighty power, but only in the face of Jesus Christ do
we see His love and His mercy. Through Him we can
know God fully and have access to Him.
