Main Ideas We continued with our Parables series this past weekend. This week we read about the Rich Fool in Luke Chapter 12. Pastor Justin shared how it is hard to understand how those two words can be used in the same sentence, together, Rich and Fool. Jesus taught in this passage you could have everything you want, and still be clueless. In America we’ve all seen this happen many times firsthand. More Money doesn’t always mean More Intelligence. In Luke 12, we read about a man who appeared to have it all, but in reality was missing the most important thing in his life. QUESTIONS Opening Discussion Question: Can you think of other word pairings like “Rich Fool” we use today that don’t seem to make sense? Read Luke 12:13-34 1. It wasn’t uncommon to see people bring questions to a Rabbi like what we about read in Luke 12. It’s interesting to see how Jesus would use those questions to teach. He didn’t change the subject, but pointed this man to a far higher issue. Why are the parables Jesus taught so effective and powerful? 2. In this passage Jesus is teaching that life is more than material goods. He shares that our relationship with God is far more important. In our prayer life, at times we can get caught up in just “asking” God to help change our circumstances. How can we use prayer to not only help us in our circumstances, but also deepen our relationship with God at the same time? 3. Jesus says that the good life has nothing to do with being wealthy, so be on guard against greed (desire for what we don’t have). This is the exact opposite of what society usually says. How can we resist the constant pressure to buy “stuff” in our culture today? 4. Most us don’t look at worry as a sin because “everyone” does it. But it’s right up there with, do not commit adultery, steal, lie, gossip and so on. Jesus “commands” us not to worry. How does worry harm us and what can we do to avoid it? 5. What can we do to assure we are seeking the Kingdom of God above all else? // participant’s guide ...continued NEXT STEPS / CHALLENGE: As our Lord and Provider, Jesus wants to help provide what you need as well as guide how you use what he provides. This week during your alone/quiet and prayer time with God search your heart/life and ask these questions: Is the Kingdom only one of your many concerns, or is it central to all you do? Where do you put your time, money, and energy? What do you think about most? How should you change the way you use your resources in order to reflect Kingdom values more accurately? With all the things you’re working on, are you working on the one thing that matters most? Your relationship with your heavenly Father.
