Letter From the Editor
I hope everyone enjoyed our Annual SFBA/Valley Picnic as much as I did. I arrived a bit early to try and
secure a couple of nice tables for our use. But even
getting there a bit before 10:00 am was not enough. My
favorite tables (the two at the end with great views on
the lakes and parking lot) were already “taken”. In fact
there were only two tables in this section that were available. Fortunately they were decent tables over looking
the parking lot (soon to become Corvair Car Show) and,
if you stood up, you could also see the lakes. On the
bright side these both had newer BBQs that made starting the coals easier (they could be turned so face the
breeze if desired). Not too bad. I unloaded my stuff to
“occupy” these tables and they settled in with my coffee and donuts.

When I arrived, most tables were already “taken”.
Just as I was beginning to question if I had the correct
date, Paul showed up (around 10:45). As seems to happen every year, people start arriving around 11:30 as I
am getting the coals fired up. First one Corvair, then
another, and another... In all five or six Corvairs showed
up (evenly split earlies and lates).

The attendance this year was quite good. Even without some of our
usual attendees (Ed & Faye, Fred & Marlene, and others) I counted
18 people. For the first time I can remember there were more SFBA
(see Letter... on page 3)
On The Cover: Ray Welter recently picked up this nice ‘64 Spyder. He already has a ‘62 that he was going to fix up, but he
could buy this Spyder from a friend for less than he was going to have to spend on his ‘62. And it’s in great shape. So he now
has two Corvairs. It’s funny how thery multiply. Welcome to the club!
The Spyder Web is published twelve times a year by SFBA Corsa, Chapter 947 of the Corvair Society Of America (CORSA). The group meets monthly on the

CORSA, $38/yr, is encouraged). An associate membership (newsletter only) is avialable for $15/yr. Memberships begin on January 1 of each year (first year is
prorated).
Advertising space in the Spyder Web is available for $50/yr (1/4 page), $75/yr (1/2 page), and $100/yr (full page). Business card size ads are $25/yr but do not
include a subscription to the newsletter. All material should be sent to the editor (address above) or emailed to [email protected]. Material must be

Letter...
than Valley folks. Several people
brought extra lounge chairs which
worked out well.
In the end we finished off about 15
burgers, 10 dogs, and a tri-tip accompanied by several salads, pies, veggie
trays, cookies, and a wonderful pumpkin bread. I manned the burger BBQ
and Seth took care of the tri-tip on the
other BBQ. This worked well. For sure
nobody left hungry. You will find several pictures on pages 6 - 8.
Just as we were leaving, Paul had a
dead battery in his Corvette. I tried to
jump start his car but the battery was
so dead that it just wouldn’t do anything (no click, no nothing). Paul called
AAA and within 15 minutes the truck
arrived (a world record response time I
am sure). He had to use two batteries
in series (that’s 24 volts) to get the car
started. I hope Paul made it home okay!
Thanks to Tony, we have three new
members this month. They decided to
switch from “Charter Members” to “Associate Members”. Thanks Tony and
welcome Terry Hoffer, Bernard Roxx,
and Gene Keller!
This month you will find another “Car
Talk” column by Tony. This is very helpful as I am sure everybody gets tired of
reading what I write. I want to encourage everyone to send in material for
the newsletter. Especially pictures.
After all it is Your Club!
Our next meeting will be a Tech Session at Harry's house in Dublin. The
theme this time will be on de-flashing
Corvair heads for better, more even,
cooling. This is an important subject
as you will find out It should be interesting! Members of Valley are certainly
welcome as are family and friends.
There will be plenty. As usual a BBQ
will follow the demonstrations and there
will be coffee and donuts (if you get
there early enough that is). The scheduled starting time is 10:00 am.

CAR TALK
by Tony Richards
I don't watch television. Not network
TV anyway. I usually rent a disc from
Netflix.
Some series I have watched this past
year include 'Six Feet Under'. The series opens with Nathaniel Fisher, a
mortician, getting killed when his new
Cadillac hearse gets broadsided by a
bus. The rest of the show depicts members of the Fisher family, who run their
funeral home in Pasadena. The series
traces these characters' lives over the
course of five years.
Not really any cool cars in this one.
Another series I watched was 'Dexter',
a television series set in Miami, centers on Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician specializing in blood splatter
pattern analysis for the fictional Miami
Metro Police Department, who leads a
secret parallel life as a vigilante serial
killer, hunting down murderers who
have slipped through the cracks of the
justice system.
Again, not really any cool cars.
Recently a TV series I found on Netflix
was 'Fargo', seasons 1 & 2. If you ever
saw the movie of the same name, Fargo
is a dark comedy crime thriller, film
written, produced, edited, and directed
by the Coen Brothers. It stars Frances
MacDormand as a pregnant Minnesota
police chief investigating roadside ho-
micides that ensue after a struggling
Oldsmobile car salesman, played by
William H. Macy, hires two criminals
to kidnap his wife in order to extort a
hefty ransom from his wealthy fatherin-law.
In Fargo, season 1 of the TV series,
Billy Bob Thornton stars. Set in January 2006, the season follows drifter
Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) who
stops at a hospital following a car accident and influences local mild-mannered insurance salesman Lester
Nygaard with his violent and deceptive
ways. Their meeting sets forth a series of murders throughout the city.
Meanwhile, Deputy Molly Solverson
and Officer Gus Grimly attempt to solve
several crimes across the state they
believe may be linked to Malvo and
Nygaard.
Not really any cool cars in this show,
either.
(well played by Ted Danson), investigate three murders linked to Rye.
Now for the cool car part: Peggy was
driving a light metallic blue 1965 Corvair
Monza coupe when she struck Rye
Gerhardt as he crossed the road after
murdering the third of three people.
Sadly, Peggy's husband Ed, trying to
'cover up' the damage to the Corvair
that occured when Peggy hit Gerhardt,
deliberately runs the Corvair into a tree.
But the Gerhardt family goon figures it
out by matching a piece of broken headlight lens found at the scene of the hitand-run with the headlight on the
Corvair at the body shop.
Ed and Peggy Blumquist are not very
smart people; other than the fact that
they own a Corvair.
The story revolves around the Corvair.
It is featured in most of the episodes!
Then I order up Fargo, season 2 of the
TV series, a prequel to the events in
season 1, takes place in the
midwestern United States in March
1979. It follows the lives of a young
couple—Peggy and Ed Blumquist —
as they attempt to cover up the hitand-run and subsequent murder of Rye
Gerhardt, the son of Floyd Gerhardt,
matriarch of the Gerhardt crime family.
During this time, state trooper Lou
Solverson and sheriff Hank Larsson

Here are a few pictures of our Annual
SFBA/Valley Picnic at Quarry Lakes
Park in Fremont. It was an exceptionally cool day for August. The initial over-
by Clark and Others
cast gave way to partial sun by afternoon. All-in-all very pleasant. While I
was manning the BBQ someone else
(I forgot whom - sorry) was taking the
pictures. Both of the piknicers and
Corvairs in the lot. Thanks!
Here is a beautiful view of then lakes. The water level looks to The “condiment table” had all of the fixings for the burgers and

and desserts.
fishing going on.
For those that think that I don’t get to eat. Between food
requests I grabbed a burger & hot dog. Can’t have just one!

Seth is talking with Harry, Roger, Walt and his wife (just off
the picture unfortunately). As you can see it was a very
pleasant day. The initial cloud cover burned off by noon.

did not get the name - or just forgot).

been raised for added cooling.
Harry’s ‘62 convertible. Love the license plates!
Roger’s nice late model coupe. Greart paint job!
Just another view of the lot.
Walt moved the battery to the front. Note the cut-off switch so
he can disconnect the battery for storage.
I am getting ready to leave and Paul needs a jump as his
battery went dead. Some how the ignition was left on.
