A big thank you to Mrs Rudd who has assisted in many ways to help the children of Amiens School with their daily lessons. We wish Mrs Rudd all the best with her further studies. Most children have worked hard to achieve their targets throughout the term. Please continue with your assistance at home as this makes a big difference. Over the holidays, please continue with some reading and looking at words in our environment. Next term, the Prep children will be joining the Home work queue in the mornings. Thank you to all the parents/carers who have attended our Parent/Teacher interviews. It is rewarding to be able to showcase your child’s successes. Throughout the term, Ms M, Mrs Edwards, Mrs Yates, Mr Nathan and Mrs Kelley have worked tirelessly to make Amiens School a great place. The children and I would like to applaud you for all your great work. We look forward to the challenges of Term 2 . Sarah turns 5 on the 25th - Happy Birthday, Sarah. Happy Birthday Mrs Yates on Wednesday – have a great day. Have a happy and safe Easter. Anne Playgroup Over the past couple of weeks, the Playgroup children have investigated shapes using playdough, patterned coloured pasta, painted pictures about weekend events and painted in an oval shape , dyed egg shells and then used these shells to decorate an egg, constructed a chicken from an egg carton and rabbit ears headband and discussed a variety of Easter activities. Last Monday, the children decorated their egg shape (ready for Morning Tea) and had an Easter Egg hunt. I hope Easter bunny finds all of you and leaves lots of eggs. Thank you to Kahlia for her input each Monday morning. Playgroup recommences, after Morning Assembly, on Monday April 11. Some old and a couple of new skills are enhanced each week. Come along with a hat and morning tea and enjoy this time with your child. Feel free to invite a friend along to come and see what goes on at Amiens Playgroup. From the Years 3 – 6 Classroom Preparations for Anzac Day Commemoration at Amiens Preparations are under way for the whole school commemoration of Anzac Day at Amiens State School on Friday 22nd April. Students are practicing their tribute song, “Can you hear Australia’s heroes marching?” and we have secured a serving member of the Royal Australian Air Force to share our commemoration at Amiens. It is planned that all students will participate in the service. Invitations will be sent out by the end of Term 1. Science Next term’s unit’s title tells us all about it – “Science Rocks”. Our students are already engaged with collecting and studying local rocks. We will be trying to have a geologist visit our school and discuss our local geology. Dale My 6 sentence story. Once upon a time there was a very young and considerate dragon called Clums. Clums lived above the clouds in a cloud kingdom in a little cloud house with his mum. Clums was actually the fastest thing in the universe. But he had one problem; he was extremely clumsy and he kept running into things at high speed and knocking himself out. He was clumsy because he fell on his head at birth. And to try and fix his problem he went to hospital. By Jeremy From the Chaplain By now you will have heard the news that I have submitted my resignation to Scripture Union and will no longer be working in the capacity as Chaplain from the beginning of next term. There have already been moves to find someone to take my place, so I am confident you will not be long without the services of a Chaplain. It’s time for me to retire from permanent regular work. I am not getting younger and neither is Barbara. You might recall in the last week or so I posed 3 questions: Where is the city of Netanya? How did it get its name? What does it have to do with the sinking of the Titanic? If you didn’t get time to do the research the following story will provide the answers. Just over a hundred years ago two brothers and their wives were on holiday in Europe. They came from the US. They were businessmen. They owned Macy’s Department store in New York along with a few other businesses. They were very wealthy. Their names were Nathan and Isidore Strauss and while they were in Europe they decided to go to Palestine where quite a number of Jewish people had settled, having bought land from the Arabs. It was a time when Jews were subjected to persecution and many decided to return to their ancient homeland to escape persecution, particularly in Russia and other European countries. They got involved in community development projects in Palestine because they saw that people were living in poverty. They contributed a lot of money to build schools and hospitals and other sorts of infrastructure. Isidore and his wife Ida decided they had seen enough and they booked their passage back to America on a ship leaving Southampton, in England on her maiden voyage. They wanted Nathan and Lina to go with them but Nathan still had things to do and Isidore couldn’t get him to leave right away. It was agreed that they were to catch up with them later, in England and join them on their voyage back to America. The trouble was that Nathan was so caught up in the work in Palestine that he and Lina left it to the last minute to head off for England and the ship home. They arrived at Southampton on the 10th April 1912 but the ship had already sailed they were several hours too late. On the 15th of April, 1912, the ship struck an iceberg. Isidore and Ida were last seen standing on the deck next to lifeboat number 8. They had just put their lady servant on to the lifeboat and Isidore told his wife, Ida to get into the lifeboat. She refused in favour of other women and children and because she and Isidore had been always together and she didn’t want to leave him now. They went down with the ship. Nathan and Lina were heartbroken when they heard the news. Nathan saw the hand of God in his having missed the ship and returned to Palestine and his charitable work among the pioneers of the state of Israel. His work was so appreciated by the Jewish settlers that they named a city after him. If you look on a map of Israel, it is on the coast about 30km north of Tel Aviv. It is called Netanya. Netan is the Hebrew version of Nathan. God bless you all, John Congratulations to our Students of the Week and Super Spellers for Week 7 ANZAC DAY CEREMONY At AMIENS STATE SCHOOL Friday 22nd April 2016 at 2:00pm You are invited to Amiens State School’s commemoration of Anzac Day as we remember the Anzacs and honour their memory.
