Nick Gillingham won a silver
medal at the Seoul Games in

boasts golds from World and
European Championships among
his extensive list of achievements.
Gillingham has been impressed
after working with 14 students
enrolled on the Elite Development
Squad programme at Dyke House
and the link will continue.
The 50-year-old said: “Talent is
an interesting word and one that
is so very subjective. I try to be
objective as well as subjective
as talent is also about passion,
desire, drive, hunger and determination where heart, mind and soul
have to come together.
“It’s simply not about who can
jump the highest or who can run
or swim the fastest. Indeed, talent
will only ever get you so far as it’s
about trainability. Do Dyke House
pupils have this quality? Yes.”

Callum Bomersbach, Reece Robinson and Cole Baldam qualified

at the end of last year. It is hoped
Gillingham’s advice can lead to
further success stories.
Gillingham said: “Initially I was
involved with the school through
the AQA Unlocking Potential Programme. I was really impressed
and it was really positive to keep
the link with the school going
forward due to the excellent Elite
programme opportunities.
“It’s my passion to pass on
knowledge. As a licensed educator, I am keen to develop sporting
potential along with the understanding that sport brings so
many life skills that will transcend
and support individuals across
decades to come whatever their
walk of life.”

THERE was no ‘I’ in team when
two sets of Tier 3 athletes on
the Elite Development Squad
scholarship programme headed
on bonding trips before and after
Christmas.
Before the festivities the Year
8-11 students headed down to
Loughborough University and
the Sheffield Institute of Sport.
They also visited the Mount Cook
Adventure Centre.
It was one of the many trips the
scheme has provided for its scholars on a number of occasions
so far, to highlight the benefits of
having top facilities to work with
in both an academic and sporting
sense.
The director of the Elite Development Squad, Danny Evans, said:
“We combined the trip for aspirational aspects to the top sporting
university in the country.
“There was a team work day in
Derby, which was at the Mount
Cook Centre where they did some
orienteering, scrambling and team
work challenges.
“Those experiences will all help
them in sport, to work as part of a
team because they were all taken
out of the comfort zone.
“The other aspect of it was to
head to Sheffield where they all
got to experience what it was like
to be a boxer, basketball player
and table tennis player for Team
GB in fantastic surroundings;
athletics too.”
After Christmas the Year 7 students went on their own trip.
Rather than go to Loughborough, the athletes started out at
