Students Attend State
Conference
Six students attended the Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference on
April 14-15 in Hershey. The students were Daryl
Andreas, Rylee Kane, Lily Leahy, Mark Mahmod,
Marcus Schmerfeld and Anne Stramara. Daryl
competed in the Cybersecurity category; Lily,
Mark & Marcus competed in the Personal Finance
category; Rylee and Anne served as members
at-large. Cybersecurity and Personal Finance
are both objective tests taken on a computer.
Mark Mahmod finished 8th in Personal Finance
and was presented a plaque at the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday evening. The top four places
move on to National Competition. In addition
to the testing, students attended workshops and
had the opportunity to observe other competitive performance events. There were over 4,700
people at the SLC. This is Mahanoy Area’s first
year in FBLA and we are very fortunate to have
four students qualify for state competition and to
have someone finish in the top ten at states is a
great accomplishment.

them stuck it out since they were little. Special wishes go out to all members of the class of 2015 for
a safe, happy, and productive life. I wish you all the best! - Mrs. Bethany L. Pepe

GRADUATION 2015
Summer Fun
As the school year comes to a close, many students are anticipating the glory that is summer.
Although the end of the school year may be a
hectic time full of stressing over finals and for
the seniors, graduation, it’s always comforting
to know that care-free living is just around the
corner. The summer time is a great opportunity
for students to get away from the school environment and relax their minds and focus on enjoying the sweltering heat! Some students will
travel to their favorite beaches, go to amusement
parks, go on a camping trip, or just hang around
with friends. No matter what the person is doing,
it’s surely more exciting than sitting in a classroom! There are so many intriguing activities the
summer can hold, but the most important part is
what you make of it yourself. This summer will
only be as exciting as you make it. Even though
summer only lasts for three months, if you make
the most of it, the memories will last forever. So
when school has finally ended at the end of May,
and we say goodbye to our friends who are going to college, we must prepare ourselves for the
coming year. Some of us will be visiting colleges
ourselves, the reality of growing up hitting hard.
Whether you happen to be spending your summer days basking in the rays of sunshine on a
sandy beach, the sound of seagulls above, or
camping under the twilight sky, crickets chirping
in the woods nearby, appreciate every second of
it, because you’ll never get this summer back, so
make it one to remember!
Graduation 2015
With June 5th quickly approaching, the senior class
is finalizing all preparations for their graduation day.
Graduation will be held on the evening of June 5th in
the high school gym. In their final days at Mahanoy,
members of the Class of 2015 will reminisce upon
their favorite memories here. The seniors will miss
their favorite teachers, classes, and most importantly, the bonds they shared with each other. Congratulations to the class of 2015, for the leadership roles
they upheld this year. Their enthusiasm and school
spirit will be greatly missed. Good luck with your future endeavors and best wishes to you all.

Creating
Awareness
Earth Day is a day meant to increase awareness and
appreciation for the earth’s environment. Held on
April 22, Earth Day is currently celebrated in more
than 175 countries annually.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson,
a senator from Wisconsin. Nelson got the idea of
Earth Day after he saw the effects of a large oil spill in
1969 in Santa Barbara, California. Nelson thought the
world would be a healthier place to live if more people
knew about protecting the earth.
On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans participated
in the first Earth Day. These people protested things
that would harm the earth such as air and water pollution.
