What does Reclassification mean? For English Language Learner Students EVERYTHING BEGINS WHEN: • Register your child for the first time in school • Fill out the registration form indicating that your child speaks Spanish ELL STUDENTS (English Language Learner) • They are identified as students learning the English language • By law the student needs to be assessed annually to know how is learning English. • This assessment test is called CELDT (California English Language Development Test) CELDT Test Assess knowledge of the English language in the following areas: 1. Listening 2. Speaking 3. Reading Comprehension 4. Writing (Grammar and Spelling) CELDT Test The levels of scores are: 1. Beginner 2. Early Intermediate 3. Intermediate 4. Early Advanced 5. Advanced Standardized Testing STAR/CST Beginning in 2nd grade students are assessed in: 1. English Language Arts 2. Mathematics English Section of STAR/CST Test The English Language Arts section of the standardized test is the one used to identify if a student is ready to be Reclassified as Fluent English Proficient. English Section for STAR/CST Test The levels of scores given in the English Language Arts section are: 1. Far Below Basic 2. Below Basic 3. Basic 4. Proficiency 5. Advanced What scores does my child need in order to be Reclassified? • CELDT Test: Early Advanced, or Advanced • STAR/CST Test English Language Arts Section: Proficient, or Advanced What does the Reclassification of an ELL student mean then? That the student has demonstrated proficiency in Reading and Writing of the English Language comparable to that of a native speaker in the same grade level. What are your responsibilities as Parents? Most importantly to support and help your student Be sure that your child always has a quiet space to do his homework and reading Have books to read or consult Always be aware of the progress of your child in school Meet your Child’s teacher and talk to him/her Monitor the progress of your child in English by checking his/ her scores in CELDT and STAR tests But above all, always ask us whenever you have a question about your child’s progress Our Goal is that ALL ELL students be Reclassified th by 5 grade
