Education News—Denise Pickett, Nursing Education Co-ordinator
Spring is just around the corner; you can feel it in the air. Take advantage of the warmer weather to
get out and stretch your legs; exercise is the best medicine to clear away the winter cobwebs.
Our education focus is abuse prevention this month. We will have education opportunities for our
front line staff on the “Relias” website. An “Abuse Quiz” will be offered as well as face to face
Abuse Prevention videos which will be viewed and discussed as a team with all staff for this month.
The Health and Safety Board will also have some information and safety talks for staff to read and
our safety talks focus is on workplace inspections and sharp safety.
Our Life Enrichment Co-ordinator with our Resident Family Care Co-ordinator will continue doing
Education sessions geared towards Residents and families on “Sharing My Home”. The sessions
will provide support for Residents dealing with others with cognitive loss: everyone is welcome,
watch for postings.
Bomb Threat is our Emergency topic of the month. Lauren and I will review this with staff on all
shifts.
Cori Johnson will be here March 22nd to do palliative care rounds education at 1015 hrs: postings
will be available soon.
The dementiability team will be doing some education on KEEBEES: what it’s all about. Watch
for postings for this wonderful opportunity coming to the Villa.
Debbie Lashbrook will be here March 31st at 1015hrs to facilitate a PIECES round table discussion.
As always, if there is a topic you or your loved ones have an interest in, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Activation—Lauren Parent, Life Enrichment Co-ordinator
March is Activation Awareness Month
Did you know that our activation department supports almost 100 activities throughout each month, paying
special attention to celebrating holidays, birthdays and Residents’ special events. Whether it is BINGO or
friendly visits, the Life Enrichment staff are keen on promoting the social, mental, physical and spiritual
wellbeing of the Residents of the Villa. Thank you for all that you do!
On a side note, we would like to congratulate Life Enrichment Aide, Carolyn
Craig, who has taken a casual position within the Life Enrichment Department in
order to open her own store on the Main Street of Midland- Tiny Gems, opening
April 1st! Congrats to Carolyn and her family on their new endeavor!
Influenza, An Outbreak Update: March 7, 2017
Influenza (commonly known as “the flu”) is a potentially serious respiratory infection caused by influenza
A and B viruses. We have been declared in Influenza A Outbreak—facility wide. Currently we have 13
residents in the building experiencing respiratory symptoms such as sudden onset of fever, congestion,
cough, extreme weakness and fatigue, with or without a sore throat and/or headache. People of any age
can get influenza and most people will recover within a week or ten days. Some individuals, especially
those 65 years of age and older, and adults or children with chronic conditions, are a greater risk for more
severe complications, such as pneumonia and hospitalization. Symptoms such as cough and fatigue can
persist for several weeks, making the return to full activity difficult. Influenza spreads by respiratory
droplets from infected persons through coughing or sneezing. It is also spread through direct contact with
surfaces contaminated by the influenza virus, such as toys or eating
utensils.
The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (OHLTC) and Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit
(SMDHU) have made additional recommendations surrounding anti-virals. This means now that we have
been confirmed Influenza A outbreak, the health unit will recommend that all of our residents and unimmunized staff take Tamiflu to give them further protection from the flu.
Many homes in Simcoe County are experiencing Influenza A & B outbreaks at this time. The Villa has
been working hard at keeping Influenza out of our building. We are enforcing that our staff remain off
work if they are experiencing cold symptoms for 5 days from onset or until symptoms are completely
gone, whichever comes first.
We are also asking you, our family members, to please refrain from visiting until further notice. Hopefully, if we all make this effort, we can help prevent the spread of this illness.
Remember: if you are visiting, to please use the hand sanitizer that is provided at the front door and
throughout the home prior to visiting and exiting your visit.
Thanks for your understanding and due diligence in this matter. Stay healthy!

From the Administrator’s Desk—Jill Wismer
It is our duty to protect the residents that reside in this home.
Please be advised that March is Abuse awareness month. During this month and
ongoing throughout the year I would like everyone, Residents, Visitors, Volunteers and Staff to be aware of our Zero tolerance abuse policy, and our duty to
protect those who reside in this home. Please refer to the bulletin board "Duty to
Report." and our "Residents Bill of Rights." These documents are located outside our main office.
Please if anyone has any further question or concerns don't hesitate to contact
myself.
I would like to thank everyone at the Villa for a warm welcoming. I am excited to be here and
looking forward to getting to know everyone! This will be a great 2017!!
