3.2.3 Chinatown - City of Toronto

3. 2 .3 Chinatown
DESIGN SUMMARY
Between Willison Square and Beverley, Dundas Street
West is characterized by the Chinatown commercial district
and parallels the boundaries of the Chinatown BIA. (The
Chinatown BIA extends to Augusta Avenue along the north
side of Dundas Street West. BIA-specific recommendations
would follow these boundaries.) The existing narrow
sidewalks, combined with the heavy pedestrian traffic, limit
opportunities for Special Projects within the Dundas Street
West right-of-way.
2012 SPECIAL PROJECTS
The following Special Projects are proposed for 2012:
• Pedestrian and Decorative Lighting: ‘Clamp-on’ style
pedestrian lights and seasonal decorative lights could be
added to the existing utility poles in partnership with the
Chinatown BIA.
• Side Yard Landscaping: Side yards at Huron Street could
be redeveloped to include new trees in planters, seating,
bicycle parking, and permeable pavers as shown on
Chinatown 2012 Plan on page 33.

The proposed streetscape design aims to eliminate
redundant street ‘clutter’ while concentrating additional
amenities at side streets, in an effort to support the unique
commercial character, and high pedestrian volumes of
Chinatown.
FUTURE WORKS
The following Special Projects are proposed for inclusion:
• Burial of Overhead High-Voltage Cables: Burial of existing
overhead high-voltage cables and replacement of existing utility
poles with standardized ones should be completed as funds
become available.
• Reinforcing Pedestrian Clearway: Vendors within the public
right-of-way should be encouraged to consolidate their stands,
in order to maintain a minimum 2.1 metre clearway.
• Waste Collection: Options for more frequent municipal waste
collection should be explored, in order to reduce the demands
on the pedestrian clearway resulting from once-a-week
collection.
• Snow Removal: Prioritize snow removal for areas with high
pedestrian traffic.
• Gateway: Designs for a proposed decorative gateway at the
intersection of Spadina Avenue should be further explored.

3. 2 .4 AGO/B E VE RLE Y STRE E T
DESIGN SUMMARY
Extending from Beverley Street to McCaul Street, this
segment of Dundas Street West is characterized by the Art
Gallery of Ontario on the south side and a block of converted
heritage, Victorian houses on the north. The sidewalks along
the north side are constricted by a series of patios, while
those on the south side are augmented by the deep set-back
of the AGO.
The proposed streetscape design aims to extend the existing
patterned sidewalk treatment at the AGO across Dundas
Street West, in order to tie the block together into an urban
room. This block would become the prime location for the
‘Festival’ configuration of the street described on page 14.
2012 SPECIAL PROJECTS
The following Special Projects are proposed for inclusion in
the 2012 works;
• Decorative Paving: A patterned cast-in-place concrete
sidewalk and road bed consistent with the existing south
sidewalk are proposed up to the north property line, as
shown on AGO 2012 Plan on page 38.
FUTURE WORKS
The following Special Projects are proposed for inclusion in
Future Works;
• Extension of Decorative Paving: Working with individual
property owners along the north side, front yard paving
could be upgraded to match or compliment the AGO’s
decorative paving, which is shown on AGO Future Works
on page 39. This work should be done in a coordinated

block as well as the unique character of individual properties.
• Front Yard Trees: Working with individual property owners along
the north side, additional trees should be planted as shown on
AGO Future Works on page 39.
• Burial of Overhead High-Voltage Cables: The potential of
burying existing overhead high-voltage cables, together with the
replacement of existing utility poles with standardized ones,
should be completed as funds become available.
• Beverley Street Pocket Park: Efforts should be made to expand
and improve the side-yard pocket park at Beverley Street, as
shown on AGO Future Context Plan on page 41.

3. 2 .5 SPECIAL PROJ ECTS - 52 dIVISION
DESIGN SUMMARY
Extending from St. Patrick Street to Simcoe Street, this
segment of Dundas Street West is characterized by the 52
Division Plaza.
The proposed streetscape design aims to accommodate
both the needs of police at 52 Division and the surrounding
community, so as to maintain the plaza for a wide variety of
public uses. Replacing the existing planters in the centre of
the Plaza with a ring of planters around the perimeter serves
the dual purpose of opening the space up for public use
and creating a perimeter that can be secured easily during
emergency conditions.
2012 SPECIAL PROJECTS
The following Special Projects are proposed for inclusion in
the 2012 works;
• Consolidate Staff Parking: Replacing the existing parallel
parking along Simcoe Street with eight perpendicular
parking spots will provide replacement for informal
parking currently located within the Plaza.
• New Planters: The existing planters will be replaced
with new planters, complete with bollards, around the
perimeter of the Plaza, as shown on 52 Division 2012
Plan on page 43.
• New Paving: Plaza paving to be replaced, complete with inground power supply, as shown on 52 Division 2012 Plan
on page 43.

FUTURE WORKS
The following Special Projects are proposed for inclusion in Future
Works;
• Public Pavilion: Working in conjunction with Toronto Police
Services, a new public pavilion would be constructed at the
west end of the Plaza to house a to-be-determined municipal
services kiosk, as shown on page 49. Suggestions for
programming include a tourist information centre or a central
information booth for BIXI, the City’s new bike-sharing program.
• Burial of Overhead High-Voltage Cables: The potential of
