HMRC Senior Internal Auditor Candidate Pack 4 Introducing some of our team Krupali Patel, Senior Internal Auditor People make HMRC one of the best places to work, to learn, to grow. People like you. I’d definitely recommend HMRC as a great place to work if you’re chartered and looking for your next career move. Since joining in 2007 I’ve had the opportunity to work on an incredibly wide range of audits covering various business areas. These include, Business Tax, Enforcement & Compliance, Human Resources, Security and IT. I’ve also worked with our colleagues at the Serious Fraud Office and the Valuation Office Agency. More recently I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in some of the exciting and successful work currently underway to transform HMRC into a digital and more customer-centred department. These challenging and varying strands of work tested my leadership skills but also gave me the chance to really develop my skills in communicating and influencing senior leaders. What I’ve enjoyed the most is being able to work with a wide variety of audit customers; helping my customers to understand the complexities of an audit and working to build a trusting relationship from the start means I can access the right information needed to do my job and develop a report that doesn’t produce any surprises. I feel like I’m making a difference every day. People definitely respect what we do and I’d say the incredible variety of work, exposure to prominent senior government leaders and issues that impact all of us is unparalleled. There is a healthy work life balance here at HMRC, which really helps me manage wider commitments. I’ve had the chance to really develop my skills in communicating with and influencing senior leaders… Krupali Patel, HMRC Senior Internal Auditor Play a central role in transformation HMRC Senior Internal Auditor Candidate Pack 5 Introducing some of our team Steve Baxter, Senior Internal Auditor The variety of work provides a real opportunity to grow in your profession. I joined the Civil Service following my A level studies. I didn’t have a clue what I really wanted to do for a career but thought that the Civil Service might provide me with some work experience to help with future job applications elsewhere…that was 29 years ago. I’ve stayed at HMRC because it has provided me a series of progression paths in terms of responsibility, grade, job specific technical learning and job roles. This in turn allowed me to consider and choose various roles working within the businesses and in the corporate centre. I enjoy that I am given the responsibility and am trusted to plan and execute my allocated audits. I get to engage with and influence a range of business customers, from Directors, senior and middle managers and people at the coal face. In terms of the work, life’s a box of chocolates…auditors in HMRC are not limited to one specific part of the business. In the last year I have worked on audits including HR/sickness absence, Commercial contract management, investigation processes and IT infrastructure. This variety provides a real opportunity to broaden your experience and develop professionally. In terms of the work, life’s a box of chocolates… Steve Baxter, HMRC Senior Internal Auditor For instance, I planned and helped to deliver a programme of audits of HMRC commercial contracts. I developed a framework that enabled auditors to collect oral and documentary evidence and report audit opinion on risk and control for each contract. The successful roll out of the framework resulted in provision of audit opinion on twenty of the top HMRC contracts by cost value; a combined annual cost of millions of pounds. The ability to have a work-life balance at HMRC means that outside of work I am a Derby County season ticket holder. I also cycle around 100 miles a week. Both of these activities involve long bouts of pain punctuated by brief moments of joy!
