Who wants to do business, if the country is believed to disregard human rights? Those who try to impart a bad image of Bahrain by disseminating fabricated news should be dealt with seriously, because they are fighting us on two fronts. Nationally by terrorising ordinary citizens and residents and destroying the peaceful atmosphere the country has enjoyed over the years and, internationally, by tarnishing the image of Bahrain by claiming that it doesn’t respect human rights and thus blocking the economic opportunities that should have been meant to steer the economy forward. Overall, purveyors of false information are worse than the saboteurs we usually see in the streets these days. What is expected of the government is to quickly implement the law governing the limits to the freedom of speech and punish sternly those who violate it. Only then can we say that we are maintaining peace and start to build an economically sound and politically liberal Bahrain based on the democratic principles already being practised in the country. Abu Mohammed A waste of water I am forced to write this because slowly the whole town has turned into a car washing area. I live in Juffair and I am observing that for many days Road 4047 is always flooded with water, covering half of the road sometimes reaching to the traffic signal. Early Tuesday morning, I decided to investigate for myself from where this water was being drained on the road. I walked in and reached the entrance to a building, where I found a few people washing cars with running water. all this water was then flowing on to the main road i.e. Road 4047. It is happening almost every day and there is no one to take notice of this. Cleaning a car is everybody’s need and that can easily be accomplished with one bucket of water, but washing with running water on the roadside is totally uncalled for. It causes a huge amount of water to be wasted, messes up the environment, destroys the road and inconveniences pedestrians. I humbly request you to please take immediate action, first against this building’s oc- A grave injustice F AR from issuing the executive order he promised to shut down the prison at Guantanamo, President Barack Obama is keeping virtually all of its prisoners confined in limbo without trials. Just as illegal, he is reviving discredited military commission trials set up in 2001 by the Bush regime for the handful of suspects who might never get their day in court. During his run for the White House, Obama had been critical of the military trials. Of the approximately 800 suspects brought to Guantanamo, and I emphasise the word suspects, only an astonishingly few six cases have proceeded to trial, even though many prisoners have been confined there for five years or longer. Three cases went to trial under Bush and three under Obama while a seventh man, Abd Al-Rahim Al-Nashiri was arraigned just the other day. According to British historian/journalist Andy Worthington, author of the book The Guantanamo Files: The Stories of 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison, only 171 prisoners remain today. That only six men have ever come before a judge in all this time establishes US jurisprudence as truly no jurisprudence at all, but a cynical system of imprisonment where men are illegally arrested, illegally transported, illegally confined and illegally tortured until they illegally confess. That the majority of Guantanamo prisoners – 600 souls – had to be let go reveals the entire premise of the so-called War on Terror was as false as the charges against them were fraudulent. Calling for prisoners to receive trials in federal courts, the American Civil Liberties Union said, “Where credible evidence exists against Guantanamo detainees, they should be charged and prosecuted under our criminal justice system, which has a successful record of prosecuting terrorism suspects and is the only way to provide the fair and reliable outcomes that Americans deserve. The ACLU blasted the indefinite detention of prisoners at Guantanamo, some of whom have been held in US custody without charge or trial for as many as eight years. It should be kept in mind the US has parallel operations to Guantanamo ongoing in Iraq and Afghanistan, where thousands of suspects have been detained without trials, and often tortured without mercy. If these crimes, under US direction, are not terrorism, what is? SR cupants who are destroying the environment, and then in general against every road-side car washer. I don’t want to hit anybody’s earning because these are poor people doing so but they should be forced to do it with wetclothes not with running water pipes. Abu Abdullah Chemistry lab? T hIs refers to a letter circulated by the Indian school chairman, who justifies contesting a second time for the school managing committee for the next three years, while his parent status is ending next year. as a long-time parent, I remember that he has himself demanded resignation of such committee members in the past. he says that he is contesting to bring higher education to the Indian school, but, sir, please first bring the chemistry lab for the benefit of the students. We mustn’t allow the school to become a political playing field for people of a particular regional. Suresh Traffic ‘constipated’ I WOuld like to bring to the notice of the traffic directorate the following constipated problem of traffic which we face in Gudaibiya. The road which connects the awal Cinema and its parallel load, al marrif avenue should be made a two-way road, so that the traffic on the awal Cinema road is eased. I understand that earlier the same road was a twoway road, but few years back it was changed to regulate traffic. It could be reverted because of the traffic jam now. hope the traffic directorate will take the necessary action immediately.
