INSULATION & ADHESIVES
Description
Econofix is a rapid setting single part, flexible S1
class adhesive specially formulated for fixing tiles
to substrates with limited movement or vibration
such as underfloor heating, tile backer boards,
plywood overlay and chipboard overlay.
Econofix is suitable for fixing most tile types
including porcelain, natural stone tiles, ceramics,
glass mosaics and vitrified tiles. It is rapid setting
and it’s capacity allows for light foot traffic after
only 3 hours, subject to site conditions.
Econofix is water resistant and therefore suitable
for use in totally saturated areas such as
wetrooms, steamrooms and swimming pools.
Econofix can be used internally and externally
and it is unaffected by frost after setting.
Open time: Approximately 30 minutes at 20°C.
Preparation
Before commencing tiling all substrates must
be clean, dry and strong enough to support the
weight of the tiles and adhesive. Remove all
dust, dirt, oil, grease and other contaminants
that may affect adhesion.
Applications
Only mix small quantities at a time until you
have become accustomed to the fast setting
nature of the product. Always mix powder to
water to achieve a buttery consistency, never add
water after initial mixing as this will impair the
strength of the adhesive.
As an approximate guide for powder to water
ratio, 25kg of powder requires 5.5 litres of water.
Product that has started to set must be
discarded.

On flat even substrates where dry conditions
exist, apply adhesive to substrate as a thin
floated coat at a uniform thickness of 3mm
– 6mm and then rib using a notched trowel
or spreader. Bed tiles into adhesive using a
twisting action ensuring full coverage of adhesive
between tile and substrate. Where tiling is
subject to frequent wet conditions such as in
showers, in addition, apply as a solid bed a thin
layer of adhesive to the back of the tile before
applying to the substrate.
Where substrate conditions do not allow thin bed
fixing, Econofix can be applied to a maximum
bed thickness of 12mm.
Ensure there are no hollow spaces or pockets
of air. Ensure the adhesive is still moist and
there is full coverage when tiles are pressed into
place with a twist action into the adhesive bed.
Adhesive should also be applied to the back of
deep studded tiles to cover the studs.
When fixing large format tiles it is highly
recommended to skim the back of the tile
with a thin 1mm layer of adhesive. This will
significantly improve the bond strength.
ECONOFIX FLEXIBLE S1 TILE ADHESIVE
Clean surplus adhesive from the tiles and joints
as soon as possible as set adhesive will prove
very difficult to remove later. Clean tools after
use with water.
Grouting
Do not start grouting until the adhesive has set.
This time can vary depending on temperature
and site conditions. Impervious surfaces may
extend the set time. In ideal conditions grouting
can begin after 3 hours. If you are tiling an
area with underfloor heating or with limited
movement you must use a flexible grout. If you
are unsure please call our technical team on
0800 0195899.
Electric underfloor heating systems
Suitable for use with Thermonet, Vario, Vario
PRO, Comfortzone Electric Underfloor heating.
When tiling on to a new electric element
or underfloor heating matting systems,
Thermogroup UK recommend that you
tile directly over the heating system or use
Econoplan flexible fibre reinforced levelling
compound over the top of the element (3-5mm)
to give a solid expandable and perfect surface on
which to apply tiles. Allow 7 days for full cure of
the adhesive before switching on the underfloor
heating, initially at a low temperature increasing
daily at no more than 2°C.
Wet underfloor heating systems
Econofix is compatible with most wet underfloor
heating please follow the manufacturers
recommendations relating to comissioning and
application
Substrates
Levelling Compounds: Ensure that the surface is
dry and free of any contaminants, loose dust or
dirt. Prime the surface with Econoprime Tiling
Primer diluted 3 parts water to 1 part Tiling
Primer and allow to dry.
New Concrete / Screed: Ensure new concrete is
confirmed dry via consistent moisture readings
across the whole surface. Sand/Cement screeds
must have a moisture reading of less than 75%
RH before work can commence. If it is a new
screed, allow 1 day per mm for drying. Remove
any laitance from the surface mechanically and
remove all dust ideally by vacuum. Prime the
surface with Econoprime Tiling Primer diluted
3 parts water to 1 part Tiling Primer and allow
to dry. Very porous substrates will require more
than one coat.
Tile Backer Boards onto Timber floors / Solid
floors: Fix the tile backer boards following the
fixing instructions of the board manufacturer.
Use jointing tape to reinforce the joints if
necessary. Ensure the surface is dry and free of
any contaminants, loose dust or dirt. Prime the
surface with Econoprime Tiling Primer diluted
3 parts water to 1 part Tiling Primer and allow
to dry.
Existing Ceramic tiles: Ensure the surface is dry
and free of any contaminants, loose dust or dirt.
Prime the surface with one coat of Econoprime
Tiling Primer applied as a slurry mix. The
slurry mix consists of 1 part water to 1 part
primer mixed with approximately 30% Econofix
adhesive to form a brush on slurry. The set time
of the adhesive will increase.
Chipboard Overlay: Chipboard must be a
minimum of 18mm and must be screwed (not
nailed) every 6 inches/150mm centres to the
substrate. Ensure there is enough ventilation
beneath substrate and that the chipboard
has been fitted competently and will take the
weight of tiles and adhesive without excessive
deflection. Make sure surface is free of loose dirt
or dust. Apply an undiluted coat of Econoprime
Tiling Primer to all exposed edges and joints and
then prime the remainder of the surface with
Econoprime Tiling Primer diluted 3 parts water
to 1 part Econoprime Tiling Primer and allow to
dry.
Plywood Overlay: Plywood must be 12mm
(minimum), exterior grade, screwed (not nailed)
to substrate at 6 inch / 150mm centres. Ensure
there is sufficient ventilation beneath substrate
and that substrate will take the weight of tiles
and adhesive without excessive deflection.
Make sure surface is free of loose dirt and dust.
Prime the surface with Econoprime Tiling Primer
diluted 3 parts water to 1 part Econoprime Tiling
Primer and allow to dry.
Asphalt / Bitumen: Ensure the surface is dry
and free of any contaminants, loose dust or dirt.
Anhydrite / Gypsum Screed: Please contact our
technical department for a specification.
Power Floated Concrete: Ensure the surface
has been allowed 7 days to cure. Power floated
concrete can leave a loose top layer and/or
laitance once it has cured. Remove the loose
top layer and any laitance from the surface
mechanically or by acid etching and remove all
dust and particles ideally by vacuum. Once the
laitance has been removed, prime the surface
with Econoprime Tiling Primer diluted 3 parts
water to 1 part Econoprime Tiling Primer and
allow to dry.
Metal Surfaces: Please contact our technical
department for a specification.
Vinyl Tiles / Sheet Vinyl: Ensure the existing vinyl
tiles/sheet is firm, stable and well adhered to
the substrate to which the vinyl was originally
applied to. Make sure surface is free of loose dirt
and dust. Prime the surface with one coat of
Econoprime Tiling Primer applied as a slurry mix.
The slurry mix consists of 1 part water to 1 part
primer mixed with approximately 30% Econofix
adhesive to form a brush on slurry. The set time
of the adhesive will increase.
