St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish Welcomes And Invites You T0 Celebrate Pentecost Sunday June 4, 2017 “There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.—Acts 2:3 READINGS OF SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT THE WEEK Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus' postResurrection promise, recounted in today's Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus' followers. Saint Paul tells us that all ofus, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church's greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: "Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!" (Psalm 104:30). (Salmo 104:30). What is Pentecost? THE CHURCH’S BIRTHDAY We're all familiar with our own birthdays; but did you know you have a second birthday? Because you are part of the body of the Church, Pentecost is the Church's birthday, and yours as well. And like any birthday, it's a cause for celebration. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. At the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. But others, accused those speaking in tongues of being drunk. Peter arose and addressed the crowd, explaining that it was only 9 o'clock, and that this phenomenon was not intoxication, but rather this was the work of the Holy Spirit, prophesied in the scripture. He called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day. These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also invited to wear red on this day. Red decorations as well as celebrations are appropriate, similar to any other birthday. In some American dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, including the silent praise of Pista Sa Nayon American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was Thanksgiving Mass very different. It was grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent at St. Catherine's in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responsSunday, June 11, 2017 es and chants of Latin since it is not difficult to pronounce.
