There can be very few schools who have a more dedicated and hardworking PSA than Glyn School. They work tirelessly and selflessly to raise funds so that the students in our school can have the benefit of extra resources which the school budget cannot cover; resources which enhance students’ time here. Tomorrow, Saturday 26 November, the Glyn PSA is holding one of the biggest events in their annual calendar; the Glyn Christmas Fayre. This event is renowned in the local area as the array and diversity of stalls makes Christmas shopping a real pleasure. Please do come along the support the event; you are bound to find the most perfect and unusual gifts! Feedback from our students and their families is very important to us. Since mid-October we have completed surveys with parents, carers and students, and also held a Parents’ and Carers’ Consultation Evening last Thursday, which was well attended. The key areas of focus were Reporting and Assessment, Curriculum, Mobile Technologies and PE and Games kit. Over the coming weeks we will be reviewing all of the feedback we have received and we will be implementing some of your ideas and suggestions later in the year. We appreciate the time which you put into supporting us which will help to ensure that we are meeting the needs of both our students and their families. Mrs Jones, Assistant Headteacher Hessle Grove – Private Road In addition to the main entrance into school on The Kingsway, we are fortunate to have pedestrian access via Hessle Grove into the school grounds. May we remind our families that Hessle Grove is a designated Private Road and, as such, no Glyn vehicles are permitted access. If you wish to drop students off at the top of Hessle Grove, please use the lay-by a little further along Epsom Road for that purpose. Students who cycle to school should dismount at the top of Hessle Grove and wheel their bicycles the short distance into school. We have formed a good relationship with local residents and strive to be good neighbours. Respecting their wishes regarding no Glyn vehicles driving down Hessle Grove will help to maintain those good links. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Marion Meadows, Publicity Officer “Hola” and “Bonjour” from Glyn’s MFL Department Currently, our MFL students are in an era of change. As they say their “holas” and “bonjours”, and collaborate, communicate, and conjugate their way through their language lessons, the scene around them is shifting. I am referring not to the changes to the curriculum, but to the fact that the very world they live in is undergoing enormous change, and the world that they will step into as adults will be very different to the world of 20 years ago. As an article published recently in the Huffington Post points out, this change will be paramount for our budding linguists. Britain has long acknowledged its weaknesses regarding linguistic ability. Sources suggesting that only about 25% of British graduates speak a second language, compared with approximately 60% of European graduates. In a post-Brexit Britain, with a clear move towards relying on home grown talent, our students will need to step it up. Luckily, here at Glyn, that is exactly what is happening. We have more students that ever studying languages at GCSE and A Level, and from Year 7 through to Year 13, our MFL students continue to impress us with their enthusiasm, resilience, and thirst for knowledge. So, for all of you Francophones and Hispanophones here at Glyn – keep it up – you’ll thank us some day! “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” - Frank Smith. Miss Atkinson, Deputy Head of MFL and Head of Spanish Mobile Technology – OurPact Software As families are aware, Glyn allows students to bring and use their mobile telephones at break and lunchtimes. However, we recognise that within a large student population some families may prefer to have greater control over their child`s access. OurPact provides software which allows parents and carers to remotely manage Internet and App access on children`s mobile devices. After creating an OurPact account, you can pair child devices and block access at a touch or through schedules. You can find more information regarding this software via their website http://ourpact.com/iphone-parental-control-app/ I can recommend this software and would welcome the opportunity of sharing my experiences of using this software with you. I would like to invite you in to meet with me on Thursday 1 December from 7pm to 8pm. If you are able to attend this meeting, please use the link below by 2pm on Friday 25 November to let us know so that we can plan for rooming and refreshment arrangements: Mobile Technology – OurPact Software If you have any questions regarding this meeting, please contact my PA, Mrs Menagh, via email [email protected] Phillip Wheatley, Headteacher Glyn 90 Lunchtime Concerts - Performers Needed To celebrate Glyn's 90th Anniversary, we are pleased to be organising a series of lunchtime concerts held in the Music Department in C2 from January 2017 until the evening event in March. These lunchtime concerts will be open to students in all year groups, every Week 1 Friday, and students are welcome to bring their lunch to the recitals. Each concert will feature one student or band, so this is an excellent opportunity to hold your own mini concert! Any students who are interested in performing in one of the Glyn 90 Lunchtime Concerts should email [email protected] as soon as possible. Jack Pepper, Head Boy, and the Student Leadership Team Jack Petchy Award for Henry Tappenden 9B I was delighted to hear that Henry Tappenden 9B has been awarded the Jack Petchy Gold Award, which was presented to him by Cllr Richard Clifton, Mayor of Sutton. Henry was nominated by the 4th Worcester Park Scout Group for his contribution to both rugby and Scouting. We are very proud to learn that he is well thought of within the Scout Group and has been recognised for his leadership skills and his kindness and support to others. Congratulations, Henry. Mrs Fairbrother, Head of House Glyn School - 90th Anniversary 2017 will be an important year in Glyn School’s history, as we mark the 90 th Anniversary of its founding. The Student Leadership Team has decided to organise a series of events across many subjects to commemorate this, and these will culminate in a formal evening event in the Sports Hall and The Chaloner Building on Thursday 30 March 2017 at 7pm. This event will feature live music from individual students, past and present, as well as poetry readings, small drama productions, art displays and technological demonstrations. Audience members, of which around 1,000 will be invited, will walk between the different exhibits in a manner similar to the annual Creative Arts’ Evening. This unprecedented event will aim to emphasise the timelessness of our school, and so the inclusion of former Glyn students is hugely important in these celebrations. If you are in touch with any former students, please encourage them to contact the school if they would be interested in participating in the evening event, whether with a musical performance, poetry reading, original piece of art or a recollection of outstanding memories of your time at Glyn. From this expression of interest, the Student Leadership Team will work with senior staff to select the most appropriate acts for the event. Former students who would like to be involved in this event with a performance, reading or display, should contact [email protected] with their name, address, telephone number and a short description of their intended activity. We will then respond before the end of the Autumn Term. 2017 will be a thoroughly exciting year for the school, and we look forward to welcoming many former students back to commemorate the fantastic contribution Glyn School has made to the local area. Mrs Smith, Finance Office Study Skills Session Review - Year 11 On Thursday 17 November, Miss Picken, Mr Taylor-Kublik and Mr Brooks ran a study skills session for Year 11 students. Students explored ways in which to motivate themselves in lessons, independent learning tasks and revision in this vital year in their education; including how they would like to feel on GCSE Results’ Day on Thursday 24 August 2017 (273 days away!) and the importance of concentrating fully on revision tasks by avoiding any potential distractions! The students were shown different ways that they could engage fully within the classroom to ensure they are getting the most from every lesson between now and the examinations, such as checking they thoroughly understand the requirements of each lesson, how it will be taught and what will be expected of them. The students have been encouraged to ask questions about the grading policies and for advice on how best to prepare for each exam. Finally, students were shown a variety of revision techniques which they could successfully apply for their Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) and their actual examinations in the summer of 2017, such as creating mnemonics (the study and development of systems for improving and assisting the memory), creating their own knowledge test questions and answers after reading a section of text and using mind maps effectively. A useful website for all Year 11 students from which to access past papers is www.fastpastpapers.com This was a really productive morning and we wish all of our Year 11 students every success with their upcoming PPEs and exams. Mr Brooks, Science Teacher, Lead Practitioner, 7 Abbey Form Tutor Miss Picken, English and Media Studies Teacher, Lead Practitioner, 10 St Benet Form Tutor Mr Taylor-Kublik, History Teacher, Lead Practitioner, 8 Tudor Form Tutor House Cross Country Competition 2016 Last week we held the annual House Cross Country competition. This event is a gruelling test of the students’ fitness and determination. The event was completed by all KS3 students during their Games lessons at Priest Hill. Students had to complete a small lap of Priest Hill, followed by a large lap and finally a snake lap, which equated to approximately 2.2 miles. Thankfully the weather was kind to us and it was quite dry for the majority of events. There were some outstanding results from our students, with some excellent performances shown below: Year 7 Henry Hebden (16.35) Merton Rowan Sweeney (16.39) St Benet Adam Booth (16.54) Oaks Year 8 Alastair Sidlin (15.34) Oaks Alexander Moore (15.40) Tudor Jayden James (15.44) Oaks Year 9 Sam Ellis (14.59) Merton Kai Hunt (15.35) St Benet Will Baker (15.40) Oaks Mr Churchill, Head of St Benet House Year 10 Careers Week – Monday 17 July to Friday 21 July 2017 At the end of this academic year students will have the opportunity of choosing one of the following three options for the week commencing Monday 17 July: Option 1: Work Experience Option 2: Careers Events Week: including visits to universities, apprenticeships and careers advice Option 3: Attend lessons as normal A flat fee contribution of £50 (not applicable for Pupil Premium students) will be required to be paid via ParentPay, the school`s online payment system, for Option 1 and Option 2. For Option 1 the fee will contribute towards the required work place checks and assessments. For Option 2 the fee is to cover expenses associated with arranging coach transport to events, the Morrisby careers test and arranging trainers for the careers events. Work Experience placements are arranged in conjunction with Patricia King Education Business Services. As part of the insurance requirements, employers, parents and carers will be asked to complete a two-part `Pupil Placement Form` for any Work Experience placements. Forms were sent via Schoolcomms earlier this week and need to be completed and returned to me by Monday 16 January 2017; an additional fee may be incurred if forms are received after this date. In order to help us plan for these events, please use the link below to complete a Google form indicating your son`s option preference. Please reply by Friday 25 November at the latest. Year 10 Careers Week Please discuss these options with your son and if you require any additional information, do not hesitate to contact the following colleagues: Work Experience queries: Mr J Braybrook, Head of Careers – [email protected] Careers Events Week queries: Mrs T Pearson – [email protected] Mr T Hayter, Assistant Headteacher Christmas Trees 2016 (Premium Nordmann Non-Drop) Once again, Glyn Rugby and the PSA are running the successful Christmas Tree Sale. The purpose of the sale is to raise funds to support the purchase of a tour kit for the Year 11 Canada Tour in July and to assist with the PSA fundraising. As a school, we manage to secure a great deal with a local supplier at discount rates, meaning that we are able to sell the best quality premium trees at around 60% of the price you would pay in most garden centres. Our largest tree, 6’6ft - 8ft, would normally cost in the region of £70.00 - £80.00; the Glyn price is just £52.00! Please support our efforts and buy your tree from Glyn School. You can order a tree via ParentPay. Trees will be available for collection from the school car park on the morning of Saturday 10 December between 9.00am and 1.00pm. Orders must be received by Monday 5 December 2016. Mr J Kearns, Assistant Headteacher, Rugby Coach Epsom Speakers Club - Highly Recommended! Glyn’s Student Leadership Team is very fortunate to meet with members of the Epsom Speakers Club every three weeks, allowing us to develop our public speaking skills and speech-writing techniques. Each 90-minute session on Wednesday evenings sees several students deliver a five minute speech that they have written since the last meeting, with the subject entirely of their choosing. As a result, the sessions have seen a broad variety of topics, from family anecdotes to the importance of the Royal Navy! But perhaps the most unique part of each session is the improvisation section. One person is asked to create a list of random questions to take to the session, and each student picks a number, and must answer that question. As you can imagine, the pressure of speaking confidently whilst considering your argument is a difficult skill, and the sessions have greatly improved our ability to cope under pressure. We are very grateful to the Epsom Speakers Club for their time, and for the advice they have given to us. Epsom Speakers Group is open to any students who want to improve their public speaking skills, particularly any current Year 12 students who wish to be part of the Student Senior Prefect and Leadership team next year. Jack Pepper, Head Boy Attendance and Achievement Glyn School has one of the highest attendance records amongst Surrey Schools. I would like to thank all parents and carers for your continued support and cooperation. 80-90% achievement is good in any test, however you may be surprised by the following statistics: Student Attendance ½ day missed every week = 90% attendance 1 day missed every week = 80% attendance 1 school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED 1 school year at 80% attendance = 8 whole weeks of lessons MISSED 90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school = ½ a school year missed 80% attendance over 5 years of secondary school = 1 whole year missed Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (Department for Education). The simple message is: the greater the attendance, the greater the achievement. How Parents and Carers Can Help Do not take holidays in school time. The school will not give you permission and they will be recorded as unauthorised absence. Talk regularly with your son or daughter about school and how they feel about it. Please contact your son or daughter’s Form Tutor or Head of House if you feel support is needed and for any anxieties to be listened to. Only grant days at home for genuine illness. (You will know.) Phone or email the school as soon as possible to tell us why your son or daughter is absent. Please do not make routine dental or medical appointments during school time. If the appointment is urgent or last minute, please advise the school. Please do not keep your son or daughter out of school the whole day. For orthodontist appointments please return your son or daughter to school after the appointment, or bring them in beforehand. If you have any concerns, please ring us and we will check attendance and be discreet. Praise and reward good attendance at home and at school. We will congratulate and encourage students. If a school can improve attendance by 1%, we will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment. (Department For Education). Please help us and your son or daughter by ensuring their attendance remains above 97%, allowing them to achieve their potential. Tickets for this event are limited and traditionally sell out very quickly so buy your tickets early. Many thanks for your support. Matched Funding Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could double the money we make from the Glyn Christmas Fayre or one of our discos? Many companies offer their employees the chance to take part in a matched funding scheme. The company will provide additional funding to a good cause (usually on a £ for £ basis up to a maximum amount). Argos, Barclays, Boots, Citigroup, Ford, HBOS, J Sainsbury, KPMG, Legal & General, RBS, Tesco, Thames Water and Unilever are just a few companies that offer Matched Funding. Generally, the employee must have been involved in the fundraising event as a volunteer. For example, a parent or carer who works for a company that offers Matched Funding volunteers to work on the refreshment stall at the PSA Fayre. The profit made by the stall is £250. The parent’s or carer’s employer will then match this amount with a further £250 (assuming they offer a £ for £ match). The amount offered will vary depending on the organisation and conditions may apply. The PSA is a registered Charity. If you require further information, or work for a company that offers Matched Funding, please get in touch. Glyn PSA [email protected] GLF Primary Schools’ Basketball Tournament On Thursday 17 November, Glyn’s Young Sports Leaders hosted the first GLF Primary Schools’ Sport Competition of the year. Our students organised and officiated the event for our local primary schools. It was great to see over 30 Year 4 pupils enjoying a new sport led by our students. There will be a number of events held throughout the year which will all be aimed at improving opportunities for Glyn students to lead others in sport and increase participation by younger pupils. Thank you to the following students for hosting such a successful event: Louie Range, Connor Griffin, Finlay Milton, Rueben Gabb, Tommy Barrell, Elliott Roberts, Elliott Payne, Harry Benton, Nathan Baptiste, Will Chaloner. Mr Taylor, PE, Lead Practitioner, Leadership Coordinator 2nd Cuddington Scout Group is Looking For Your Votes! Whilst the 2nd Cuddington Scout Group is not connected with Glyn School, many Glyn students are members of the Group and we have therefore agreed to bring this article to your attention. The 2nd Cuddington Scout Group is looking to secure funding to make their premises accessible for everyone by adding access ramps, removing steps and adapting the toilet facilities. (This grant is separate to the AVIVA grant that I mentioned a few weeks ago, so if you are part of another local group or team, this will not affect your own application). The Group is not asking for your money, but instead they are seeking your help by casting a vote for their project, details of which you can find here on the flyer and on their website. If you wish to find out more about the project, or to cast a vote, please logon to: http://tinyurl.com/vote2ndCuddington Marion Meadows, Publicity Officer Former Glyn Student, Ashley Castle, Continues to Impress with Water Polo Success Ashley enjoyed a really good weekend recently at the Golden Coast Conference Tournament, playing for San Jose State Spartans, where he impressed with a career-high four goals. When visiting Glyn School and passing through the vestibule to The Proctor Hall, visitors will notice our Hall of Fame where students’ GB representations are honoured. Ashley Castle is acknowledged here for his eight Caps for GB U19 Water Polo. The whole Glyn community wishes Ashley well as he continues to shine in the US. Marion Meadows, Publicity Officer Sports Team of the Week - Intermediate Boys’ Swimming Team Congratulations to the Intermediate Boys’ Swimming team who came 5th in the English Schools’ Secondary Relay Championships last weekend. The team of Spencer Gall, Cameron Mckay, Tom Rothwell and Luke Philips swam a time of 1.50.46 to get a place in the final 30, seeded 11th. On Saturday the team, along with Henry Melrose, swam 1:48.43 and were seeded 7th in the Final, then achieved 5th place in a time of 1:47.06. Special mention to Luke Philips who made up the team to get them into the finals and to Henry Melrose who, despite his goggles breaking, took a second off his personal best time in both his swims. Mr Batchelor, Deputy Headteacher Chelsea Training Ground Visit A select number of students from Glyn’s Year 7, 8 and 9 football teams were given the chance to visit Chelsea’s world-class training facility in Cobham on Wednesday as a reward for their hard work and commitment to school football so far this academic year. Pictured above from left to right: Thomas Barrell (8C), Daniel Spriggings (7C), Joseph Bennett (8A), Archie Wills (8A), Oliver Allen (8B), Korede Oderinde (9B), Reuben Gabb (8SB), Alex Neal (9B), Lucas Stevens (9C), Thomas Culver (9C), Daniel Goncalves (9D), Rafael Goncalves (7A), Ronnie Belcher (7D). On 23 November, the group was privileged to visit Chelsea’s world-class training facility in Cobham. Led and organised by Mr Tanner, and supported by Mr Knight, we departed Glyn on the minibus just after 9 o'clock, with the bus alive with excitement and the sound of Lucas Stevens singing. We consequently arrived just before 10 o’clock due to mid-morning traffic and debatable Google Map reading, and we were immediately in utter awe of the magnitude of the building(s). Developed just 12 years ago, the modernistic style to the various buildings left us astounded, only for us to realise we would actually be touring them. The first part of our tour was inside the main building, and the leader of Chelsea education, Mr Knight, sat us down at various places along the way, explaining the principles and demands of being a Chelsea player. All of us were listening so intently to Sir and a Chelsea youth team player, we nearly forgot it was time for us continue our tour. Visiting the newly constructed three million pound artificial grass arena, we also had the chance to watch various age groups train as part of their daily programme. Completely inspired by seeing the boys, only a few years older than us chasing their dreams, all of us were still eager to see the first team. Trekking across acres of lush grass, beautiful pitches and ridiculous fountains, every attention to detail caught our eye. Despite being disappointed to not see the first team, the opportunity of chicken sandwiches and watching the behind-closed door game between Chelsea U21s and Brentford U21s left us all astonished once again, and if the calibre of the game we spectated did not inspire us, not much will! Cont. As we waved goodbye to Chelsea, we were all oblivious to one more accidental surprise. Obscured through the bushes were first team stars like David Luiz, Pedro, Victor Moses and Eden Hazard! This truly capped off such a brilliant morning that will stay as a memory and inspiration for a long time, and none of this would have been possible if it were not for the brilliant Mr Tanner and the ever-helpful Mr Knight. Along with saying thank you to them, we are also grateful to Chelsea FC for hosting us and allowing us to see everything from academy teams to first teamers! Reuben Gabb, 8SB Badminton News A Year 7 and 8 team welcomed Trinity School on Monday and played singles and doubles matches. The games were done on a points basis with each school getting a cumulative team score by the end of play. Team: Oliver Gray Tom Nightingale Charlie Keeley Jamie Knott Henry Maric-Murray Despite a couple of close games against the very competent Trinity team, the Glyn side romped to victory with an overall score of 448 points to Trinity’s 212. Well done, boys; you played excellently and thoroughly deserved the win.
