APARTHEID
What does Apartheid mean?
• "the state of being apart“ - separate
• Refers to racial segregation in South Africa,
beginning in 1912, but enforced through
legislation by the government from 1948 to
1994
Segregation, Oppression, and

• the rights, associations, and movements of the
majority black South Africans were
stopped/denied.

Government Change
• Mandela was released in 1990
• Multi-racial democratic elections were held in 1994 and
won by the African National Congress under Mandela
(served as President from 1994-1999)
• Mandela's government focused on dismantling the
legacy of apartheid through tackling racism, poverty
and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation
• Although the official abolition of apartheid occurred
in 1991 with repeal of the last of the remaining
apartheid laws, non-whites were not allowed to vote
until 1993
