Pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving
Easter is a time of joy and renewal. Followers of Jesus saw their darkest days replaced with the miracle of hope
and eternal life. Christians today take time for self-examination and reflection during Lent. "Going dark" for a few
weeks prepares us to fully experience those first rays of resurrection light on Easter.
This prayer was composed by the Rev. Michaela Youngson, the Methodist Church of Britain.
Prayer:
When everything was dark
and it seemed that the sun would never shine again,
your love broke through.
Your love was too strong,
too wide,
too deep
for death to hold.
The sparks cast by your love
dance and spread
and burst forth
with resurrection light.
PRAYERS
Gracious God,
We praise you for the light of new life
made possible through Jesus.
We praise you for the light of new life
that shone on the first witnesses of resurrection.
We praise you for the light of new life
that continues to shine in our hearts today.
We pray that the Easter light of life, hope and joy,
will live in us each day;
and that we will be bearers of that light
into the lives of others.
Amen.

POLICY ON THE USE OF PHOTOS & NAMES IN CHURCH PUBLICATIONS
A policy has been created and is being publicized to remove any doubt about how photos, videos, and names are used in
CPFUMC publications. Our communications and Web team drafted the policy. At our March Church Council
meeting, the Church Council discussed and made an extensive markup of the draft, approving the policy as follows:
CPFUMC Policy on the Use of Photos & Names in Church
Publications
1. Photos, videos and full names of adults may be used in church publications
(website, Happenings weekly email publication, Connections newsletter,
Facebook, Twitter, etc.), where useful and pertinent, to publicize church events,
unless the adult specifically requests an exception.
2. Photos, videos and first names only of children may be used in church publications
(website, Happenings weekly email publication, Connections newsletter,
Facebook, Twitter, etc.), where useful and pertinent, to publicize church events,
unless the child’s parent or legal guardian specifically requests an exception.
3. We will not publish the roster of members contact information online unless it is
in a special secure area of our website which requires member login. (Currently
this does not exist).
4. Exceptions to this policy may be requested on the church website.
Our newsletter, Connections, our weekly e-mail report, Happenings, and our website, cpfumc.org, are the primary
publications affected by this policy. Anyone wishing to request an exception and opt-out of this policy for themselves
or their minor children may do so on the church website at https://cpfumc.org/opt-out-declaration/.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE FREE CLEANUP
Cedar Park Hazardous Waste Clean Up
GUPTON STADIUM PARKING LOT
CORNER OF GUPTON WAY AND E PARK STREET
This might be something for the Happenings:
If people (like me) have old electronics (“e-waste”) and such to recycle. Also, from my experience, there is
usually a long line at Gupton Stadium. It’s actually better to wait until after 1pm to go. The line is usually
shorter.

TIDBITS
"The feeling I have had over the last couple of days that really sums up where we are regardless of where we stand
is really one of lament." — The Rev. Christopher H. Evans, one of the scholars at an academic meeting on
church unity.
Scholars raise doubts about church's future
Seminary professors are having their say on how The United Methodist Church should navigate its deep
disagreements about the status of gay and lesbian individuals.
However, a number of scholars doubt the denomination can stay united — at least in its current form.
The Rev. Kim Cape, the top executive of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry,
addresses scholars at the meeting, titled “Unity of the Church and Human Sexuality.” Photo by Ebony Lincoln,
Higher Education and Ministry.
“If you have strong convictions either for or against gay marriage, it seems to me that in a
Wesleyan understanding of holiness, saying yes to both in one body is problematic,” said the
Rev. Kevin M. Watson. He is a Wesleyan and Methodist Studies professor at Emory University’s
Candler School of Theology in Atlanta.
The United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry brought together 28 academics
from three countries for a sort of one-time think tank. The title of the March 9-12 gathering at Candler was “Unity
of the Church and Human Sexuality: Toward a Faithful United Methodist Witness.”
The Rev. Kim Cape, the agency’s top executive, described the gathering as “an opportunity to demonstrate how
people of faith with differing opinions and perspectives can discern God’s way.”
The goal was for participants to share their expertise in the Bible, church history, theology and Christian ethics as
United Methodist leaders consider the denomination’s future. As Candler Dean Jan Love summed it up, the
academics “honor God with their minds.”
Among the observers of the scholarly conversation were eight members of the Commission on a Way Forward, a
group of bishops, other clergy and lay people entrusted with proposing a way through the denomination’s
impasse on homosexuality. Other observers included seminary presidents, students and some LGBTQ
individuals.
Florida Area Bishop Ken Carter, one of the commission’s moderators, also observed the gathering.
“These professors here represent the intellectual life of our church, and to try to find a way forward within the
complexity of unity, division and LGBTQ concerns without drawing upon their work would be absurd,” Carter told
United Methodist News Service. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.
The meeting brought together scholars from across the theological spectrum.
