A Rotary International
Convention Month
Article
Submitted by Dir.
Richard Purdom
Greetings, my fellow Rotarians, and welcome!
The House of Friendship has long been a special part of Rotary’s
international conventions, and this year is certainly no exception. It’s a
place for Rotarians and their guests to gather, to learn, and to share
experiences with one another. It’s a place where you can discover aspects
of Rotary that you may not have known about. Above all, it’s a place for
Rotary fellowship and friendship, a place where you can greet old friends,
make new ones, and, together, celebrate the very best of what Rotary has
to offer.
As you walk though the House of Friendship, you’ll find information about
international service projects that you may want to partner with. You’ll
meet members of Rotary Fellowships and Rotary Action Groups that you
may want to join. And you’ll also find resources that will help your Rotary
club be even more effective than it is today.
One highlight this year that I am very excited about is the introduction and
launch of Rotary Showcase. Rotary Showcase is a newly developed
Internet tool that enables you to easily post information and pictures from
your Rotary club’s service project. Then, with a touch of a button, you can
share those projects with others through Facebook. Likewise, Rotary
Showcase enables you to search Rotary projects by keyword, so that you
can learn what Rotary clubs are doing all over the world.
Rotary Showcase is a wonderful new development that truly harnesses
the power of social networking to Rotary’s benefit. I urge you to take
advantage of the fact that Rotary staff are available, right here in the
House of Friendship throughout the convention, to show you how to use
Rotary Showcase and to answer any questions you may have.
You’ll find information about Rotary Showcase in the Rotary Resource
Center. There, you’ll also want to visit the Rotary Bookstore, where you
can purchase copies of the newly revised ABC’s of Rotary book, along
with new videos and other Rotary materials that can help your club raise
funds, recruit new members, and contribute to polio eradication.
Finally, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to get early registration
pricing on next year’s convention in Lisbon, Portugal.

The House of Friendship offers such a wealth of information that I am sure
you will want to visit it frequently during these next few days.

Sunriser Garth Arch Is 2012 YCLA Winner!
The recipient of the 2012 Young
Caymanian Leadership Award is none
other than Rotary Sunrise's Garth Arch!
As Rotarian Garth was quoted as saying
in the May 14th edition of the Caymanian
Compass,“It’s a tremendous honour. I feel
humbled to receive the award. I want to
use YCLA as a platform to reach out to as
many of the young people in this country
as I can.”
The YCLA ceremony was held
on Saturday night at The Ritz-Carlton,
with several Sunrisers in attendance to
cheer for Garth, led by PP Winston
Connolly.
Currently working on his doctoral
dissertation in engineering, Garth
also holds bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in engineering. He is the general manager of National Concrete
and founder of Arch Engineering.
In addition, to his studies, work, and Rotary, Garth has somehow found
time to chair the Children and Youth Services Foundation Board, Trade
and Business Licensing Board, and Planning Committee for the
Governor’s Award for Design and Construction Excellence. He is also
the immediate past-president of the Cayman Society of Architects,
Surveyors and Engineers, and a member of First Baptist Church.
Congratulations, Rotarian Garth! You are clearly deserving of this
prestigious award!

Extinct Animals
(Please Read!)
Greetings, fellow Rotarians.
Sunrise Supporters
I am on the prowl for several
endangered species. It
seems that these particular
animals are quite difficult to
track and capture but I am
sure with your help we can
hunt down these elusive
species, breed them in
captivity (or in our club) so we
can stave off their extinction.
If you recognize the following
animals, please reach out to
me. I have a tranquilizer gun at the ready and will mobilize myself with
stealth and speed and could really use these animals over the coming
weeks.
Greeter – (Laetus Maximus)
Commonly mistaken for a caffeine addict--an early riser by nature, forages just
after the break of dawn. Possesses a striking set of incisors to lure in its prey,
energy levels fade shortly before midday.
Grace – (Presbyter)
A creature of habit. Pious pontificating is a sure sign you have identified this
creature. Enjoys wine for ceremonial purposes and because it is Monday.
4 Way Test – (Veritas, Aequus Amicus, Cui Bono)
A righteous creature who paves the way for others through its actions. Sadly akin
to a unicorn in modern times, many strive to live the enlightened path, but due to
the high number of lawyers and bankers in our club it is not possible.
Rotary Minute – (Orator Minitus)
Has been on the endangered list for quite some time. Typically thrives in open
spaces and open microphones. A direct descendant from Cicero, very comfortable
in any environment and on any topic. Despite public perception, this is not a
mythical creature.
Raffle – (Magna Donum)
Selflessly giving is trade mark behaviour. The gifts are highly wine-centric, but
nevertheless greatly appreciated by the receiving public. Unsurprisingly loves
Christmas.
As I said, fellow Rotarians, your assistance is greatly needed. Ask yourself
this question: could you actually live with another Caribbean Monk Seal
extinction scenario?

New Sand for Spotts-Newlands Park
On Saturday, April 14th, a small group of Rotarians got together to
replenish the sand and give the park a little sprucing up. It was a lovely
day, not too hot for manual labour. This project had been coming for quite
some time so it felt really good to finally get to it.
Tri-Island Aggregates dropped the sand off the evening before so it was
ready for us bright and early Saturday morning. A special thank you to
Claude Myles who kindly paid for the cost of the sand! It is readily evident
that he takes great pride in this park and has contributed greatly to its
existence, along with Rotary Sunrise. Special thanks go out to Rotarians
Ian, Chris, Finley, Gina (and her mom Katie), Claude and Winston, who all
came out to shovel sand and trim the plants and trees. Claude also had
one of his workers power wash the playground equipment. President
Andrea and Pat also came out to help after returning from the Chamber
Roadside Clean-up. Director Barb provided a breakfast of choice to all of
the volunteers.
So, at long last, the sand has been replenished and we can move on to
another project at the park; Claude suggested we might be interested in
splashing a little new paint on the playground equipment as our next
project. Stay tuned for when this will take place.
