What a week this one has been. After Sunday night our
community is slowly getting back to “normal”. We have
tired students and tired staff who have done an amzing
job this week. I would like to acknowledge the efforts
of our staff, who like most of our whanau, had to
evacuate and spent Sunday night driving around our
city. An experience we are all unpacking and coming to
grips with.
Tonight our Fair is perfect timing to help us recover and
celebrate our wonderful community. Please all come
along, with money and a smile.

School Honour Roll
On Wednesday night, it was my privilege to accompany
Connie-May Whitehouse and Phoebe Wells to the
Avon-Otakaro Rotary Club dinner at The Elms Hotel. At
the ceremony, they were presented with School Honour
Roll Awards for their citizenship and for the way they
contribute positively to our school. This award is
recognised by the Mayor and represents an outstanding
achievement. Congratulations to you both!

Student Leadership
At Parkview, we pride ourselves on being a full primary
school which goes right up to Year 8. We value the
contribution that our Year 7 and 8 students make to our
school and we want to ensure that they have
opportunities to develop and expand their leadership
skills. With this in mind, I ran a workshop last week with
a group of students from Years 6 to 8. I listened to their
ideas on leadership - what it means, what it ‘looks like’
now, what they would like to develop from being a
leader and how they see leadership looking at our
school from 2017. The careful thought and
consideration they put into their comments and ideas
was very impressive! Their ideas will be used as a
starting point for the development of our school’s
student leadership programme which will be shared
with the rest of our community. Stay tuned for future
updates!

Guy Fawkes Night
In the weekend my whole family walked to my friend’s
house and after
dinner we did the
fire
sparklers.
Then I blasted the
colourful
fireworks off the
end of a truck. The
fireworks
were
powerful
and
horrible. It was
terrifying to see
the colourful fireworks. My friend, Paige, was inside
because she was so, so scared. I was running inside and
outside because I was just a little bit scared.

What’s Happening in Room 5
Room 5 wrote stories about their fireworks experiences
and drew pictures.
All the children in Room Five have written stories,
unfortunately they can not all fit in the newsletter. If
you wish to read some more please visit Room 5.
Fireworks
I drove to Guy Fawkes with my cousins, Dad, friends and
Aunty. Some spun around and some sparkled up. My
dad had love heart sparklers. At the end, I thought it
was finished but there was a cute little one out to sea.
On our way home, there was so much traffic I wanted
to go to sleep.

They exploded in
the sky like a
watermelon
splatters on the
ground. It was
beautiful.
The
little fireworks at
the back were in
time. It was like
they were doing it
on their own but at the same time. Some of them were
enormous and some of them were tiny. There were
fireworks which looked like Rapunzel’s hair. I loved
them.

Taniwha
Taniwha are green and purple. They are a fascinating
creature. They have big, scary eyes. Some taniwha can
fly. Taniwha have great big mouths. They have bumpy
scales on their bodies. Some taniwha are friendly and
some are mean as. Some live in swamps. They have big
faces. They have got big wings for flying and
humungous feet.

Fireworks
When you stare at the fireworks and they boom, it feels
like they are coming to get you.
