Building Relationships
Dental Health and Education
Has Been Revamped
No more phone calls to go out to schools. Everyone is short on
time, so we have changed our approach to supporting Dental
Health. We have updated the Dudley & Dental Health materials and
added Drink Less Sugar sheets, and these items are available to you
when you want to use them for a school or project of your
choosing! Yes, schools can reach out to us and we will still need
you to help stuff kits & assist with Give Kids a Smile Day, but the
time commitment has been greatly reduced. Be sure to read page 5
for the latest information on our two new Dental Health programs,
and the awards that Barb Paulus just received!

This year marks our 60th
anniversary, what an accomplishment!
Perhaps more than anything else, our
organization continues to survive
because we value the relationships we
have built together. We simply enjoy
each other’s company, and our
commitment to fellowship should
never be minimalized.
When rallied around a cause,
our relationships have been leveraged
into action. Each to their own
strength; we have been Tooth Fairies,
puppet masters, bag stuffers, check
writers, teachers, mentors, strategists
and advocates. We have promoted
dental health and education, have
served as a social arm for the SCDS,
and have been there for each other as
friends.
Times have changed, people
are spread thin; and we are challenged
with finding new ways to channel our
collective time and talent. We want to
hear from you. Our reach will be
maximized if we can just do what we
do best, work together as friends.
Let’s co-create an engaging and
socially responsible future, a future we
can be proud of!
Here’s to sixty more years of
building relationships, of working
together to make good things happen
in the world around us, and to staying
connected as friends!

I have been with the Alliance for 8 years. As the mother

and pretty much all outdoor activities.

A Message our President
Debra Fleming
Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in Sagamore Hills Ohio, the second oldest of 4. I lived on a small farm and
raised one special horse for 17yrs (named Zinbad) who became my best friend. Married an
orthodontist in the military and traveled around the world for 10 years supporting him,
support our country. Moved back home to Ohio, in 2005 with our three beautiful children,
Brandon, Daniel and Nicole. Helped start a successful Orthodontic practice in North Canton
Ohio, (now going on 10 years) where I practice a little hygiene while I help manage the office.
My family and I love spending our time outdoors. Whether skiing, camping, horseback
riding, mountain biking or going to soccer games; we are a close-knit group. We recently built
our dream barn where we keep our two horses, Prince and Persus, bunny named Puddles, and
a goat named Snoopy. Everyone in the family is enjoying horseback riding and the beauty the
horses bring just watching them run around. For me, it’s also an indescribable calm like no
other. (Cheaper than a therapist!) We also enjoy our two Australian Shepard’s Sierra and
Copper, which are wonderful dogs with quite a bit of energy. Both Dave’s and my family live
in the area, which allows us to enjoy holidays and family time all the more.
Are there any specific issues you intend to address during your two years as
President?
I would like to work closely with our group to bring back some type of dental
education. The two programs we were involved with this year, allowed us to contribute
supplies to those in need, without expecting large amounts of time and commitment from our
members. We live in a busy society and trying to find ways to reach out to others without
stressing and complicating things at home is a struggle we all deal with. So finding creative
ways to reach out as an organization will be challenging but possible.
How would you respond to those who question the value of membership in our
Alliance to the Stark County Dental Society?
Being a part of the military family for over 10 years, one of the things I really felt
extremely grateful for was the closeness the military families had with one another. We were
a group of people in a relevant situation. We had each other when things were good and not
so good. Having support from families who understand the day-to-day stresses we go through
as dental provider may help to make life a little easier. This support is what I found in the
Alliance when we moved to this area. A wonderful group of ladies who I know I could count
on. The fun we shared at activities, conversations we had, and the joy we shared watching
each other’s kids grow up and move on, is a priceless friendship I hold very dear. Our lives
always tend to become so busy that we find it hard to take any time for ourselves, whether it’s
going to an Alliance function for fun and comradely or just taking time to help out in the
community. I can only hope the ladies of this dental society find time to be a part of this
supportive organization.

By Cathy Treiber
We started the year with a tournament
Euchre night…always great fun! Next Jackie
planned a fantastic evening with Canton
Food Tours! We learned a lot about Canton
history, ate some incredibly good food, and
had a lovely evening! Thank you Jackie!
Our Alliance offers a $500 scholarship to
students enrolled in the Dental Assistant or
EFDA program at Stark State College. The
student must be in good standing and a resident
of Stark, Wayne or Carroll County. The
scholarship is awarded to the student upon
completion of all course requirements.
The scholarship committee carefully reviews
student applications to determine who is best
qualified to receive the award, which is based
on commitment to their work, character
references and financial need.
We go into the fall by celebrating our 60th
anniversary on November 13th with an updated
American Holiday Tea at Shady Hollow Country
Club. The chef has planned a creative menu and
I know there will be chocolate! We will have
samples of our dental health materials on
display. There will also be a Holiday Decorating
Presentation & fun prizes! See you there!
The purpose of the scholarship is to offer
financial assistance towards tuition, course
materials and licensing. Our goal is to
encourage and support students entering the
dental profession in the community.
This year's scholarship recipient is Kimberly
Dumas. Kimberly is a 2014 graduate of Stark
State's EFDA program. She is a single mom of
two teenage children, works full time and put
herself through school. She is very dedicated to
her profession and committed to providing the
best possible care to her patients. Kimberly
plans to use the scholarship to help defray the
cost for her licensing. The scholarship
committee felt she was much deserving of this
award and we wish Kimberly much success in
her future dental career! Good Luck Kimberly!
Next year we have Tournament Euchre planned
for Friday January 9th, and possibly a second
date in February! We also are finalizing plans
for a Craft Beer Tasting with spouses, a Summer
Book Read, and a casual evening gathering in
the fall. Let us know how you would feel about
a Salsa Dancing night – it could be a lot of fun
with enough interest!
We hope the Alliance will do some spontaneous
gatherings using Facebook and email in 2015 …
let’s see!

MEMBERSHIP NEWS
Amanda Wise
Tripartite Membership
Many questions have been asked about why we offer two different levels of membership to the
Alliance of the Stark County Dental Society. In the fall of 2004, our membership voted to join the
state and national Alliance. The Auxiliary of the Stark County Dental Society became the
Alliance of the Stark County Dental Society in January 2005. We became a tripartite organization
meaning membership at the national, state, and local level. One of our conditions for joining the
state and national alliance would be the ability to give our members the choice of joining at the
national, state and local level (tripartite membership) or remain a member only at the local level
(component membership). It was the desire of the Board to keep our membership smiling by
offering them a choice of membership.
Why join the Tripartite? It is more expensive to join at the national, state and local level but there
are many benefits to doing so. As a member of the Tripartite you will receive:
! Access to all AADA Member Benefits
! KEY-the AADA’s award-winning newsletter. In it you will find news, meeting
updates, and
helpful articles.
! Assistance from your Leadership Council
! Access to resources for dental health education, legislative advocacy, membership, and
well-being.
! OHIANA- Alliance of the Ohio Dental Association’s newsletter
The Alliance of the Stark County Dental Society is an outstanding organization. Membership at
either the local only or the Tripartite is extremely important and vital for our organization to
thrive. It is important to stress that having members at the tripartite level will continue to give our
Alliance access to resources for the exceptional dental health and education programs we have
offered to Stark County.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION: Who can join at the local level?
Per our bylaws, spouses of members of the SCDS may become members of the Alliance. However,
please note that our local membership has provisions for Life Members, Contributing
Members, and a Resident Spouse member category. We have even had dentists join at the
local level! This variety of membership options has allowed us to be an inclusive organization
that recognizes the diverse nature of our local dental family.
