Every one of our supply drives brought in more donations than ever before. • Our Back to School Supply Drive tripled the previous year with 300+ backpacks filled and given to kids in need. • The Winter Wear Drive collected boxes of hats, mittens, and scarves for clients to take from “mitten trees” at all four branch locations. • The Holiday Drive was a huge success with 20 companies, organizations and individuals either adopting families or contributing gifts from our “Wish List” for a grand total of $5,000 in donations. • The Play Therapy Toy Drive brought in much needed items worth $500. • Our Camp Supply Drive provided sleeping bags, flashlights, bug spray and other supplies to send 20 kids to camp for the first time. Thank you Deloitte volunteers! Deloitte and its employees made a huge impact at our Lake Street branch during Deloitte Impact Day. Twenty-three volunteers worked to spruce up our building both inside and out, including painting and landscaping. Deloitte donated more than $1,000 worth of materials to make the project a success. Thanks to Board Member Brian Mallaro, a partner at Deloitte, who encouraged us to apply for this opportunity. “It was very satisfying to be a part of this great day.” — DELOITTE VOLUNTEER 2008 ANNUAL REPORT hearts Dear Friends, Like most of our country, Family & Children’s Service experienced some pretty rough weather in 2008. While the families we serve struggle with the mounting economic woes, many changes in —PROVERB nonprofit funding have also put pressure on our organization’s budget. Even as the election of the country’s first AfricanAmerican president evokes great hope and prospects for the upcoming years, uneasiness about the near future remains. “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” Family & Children’s Service faced this challenge as we have every other storm in our 130-year history – by bringing together the “heads, hands, and hearts” of our board, staff, volunteers, friends, and participants to find creative ways to deliver programs and services, while trimming costs. The result? We helped over 27,000 people lead safer, healthier, and more productive lives! Heads focused on delivering quality services • We adopted new best practices in mental health and violence prevention and intervention, and served 12,734 people. • Both locally and nationally, we continue to lead the way in community building and civic engagement. We brought together more than 8,000 local residents to work on projects that improved conditions for kids and families. And, for the second straight year, we were invited to host a national civic engagement institute to share our strategies with others from across the country. • We redesigned our school success services to meet changing community needs and served 6,011 kids and families. Hands worked to maintain a balanced budget • 551 people gave over 9,000 hours of service – a 57% increase in volunteers. • 583 donors gave generously – 13% of returning donors increased their gift from the previous year, and we added 39% more new donors/friends. • 13 new revenue sources were added to our list of funders. “In prosperity, our friends know us; in adversity, we know our friends.” Hearts maintained core values 90 schools, diverse community organizations, and groups and alliances like the MACC Alliance of Connected Communities, we carried on our dedication towards building vital communities. “Adversity is like a Throughout strong wind. It tears this year, we have been away from us all but continually the things that cannot inspired by the be torn, so that we generosity of all see ourselves as we our partners, who bring their heads, really are.” hands, and hearts to —ARTHUR GOLDEN Family & Children’s Service. You help us build strong families, vital communities and capable children. Together, we will weather the current storm and emerge as an even stronger community! After some encouragement from Vicki, our staff facilitator and the other parents, Gloria revealed how she promised her children that she will read to them every night. She has never broken her promise, despite working two jobs. The other parents were amazed and wanted to know how she managed it. YER DY DW One spring morning, 40 families, many of them Somali and Russian immigrants, learned they were about to lose their homes when the management at their St. Louis Park apartment complex decided to no longer accept Section 8 housing vouchers. Tenants were given 60 days’ notice to find new places to live. The residents turned to Family & Children's Service for help. Amina, one of our community organizers, helped the residents to form a tenants’ association. Through this association, the residents were able to negotiate with the property firm and avoided having to move. The company allowed the tenants to stay, and the tenants agreed to pay a supplement toward the rent. The demand for rental apartments has risen considerably due to the current economic downturn. This leaves many low-income families at great risk to lose their homes and is why our community building work is so important. As one tenant said, “I couldn’t afford to pay moving expenses again, and now my children won’t need to transfer to new schools. My family thanks you!” Tommy was withdrawn and not doing well in school. He and his baby sister had been placed in a foster home when their mom lost parental rights due to her drug habit and physical abuse of the children. Tommy’s foster parents brought him to see Robin, one of our therapists with expertise in children’s mental health issues. Through this experience using the “Heads, Hands and Hearts” activity, Gloria gained confidence in herself and said, “The best part is, now my kids see me as a role model and a leader in their school!” • We maintained our focus on children and they became the core population of our clientele. Now nearly 60% of our clients are children, a 45% increase since 2006. • We continued our mission to give help to those less fortunate: 75% of our clients who sought us out for help live in poverty. We provided them with services like low-cost mental health care, which they otherwise couldn’t afford. PHOTO Gloria told them she went to the local library and made friends with the librarian, who now sometimes gets books ready for Gloria’s family when they’re in a hurry. Gloria said, “Reading together gives me the best feeling in the world.” As she began talking, her body posture changed; she became confident and even agreed to make a presentation at our next meeting. At first, Tommy couldn’t even say whether he’d like something to drink when Robin asked him at the beginning of each session. Through play therapy, Tommy began to learn to say how he felt and what he wanted. When he was living with his mother, he had no control over her moods or his young life. Robin also taught him yoga movements and breathing techniques to use if he started to feel anxious or angry. What happens is pretty amazing. People start talking about ways to use these ideas to improve their neighborhood, school and community. The goal for Tommy was to reunite with his dad. Together, they participated in counseling with Robin. After nearly a year, the dad regained custody of the children. Tommy had become a gregarious little boy who now asked Robin for something to drink when they met. His dad was happy to be a part of their lives again and said, “I can’t thank you enough for bringing our family together – now we’ve got hope.” Thank you donors Family & Children’s Service appreciates the generosity of donors who help sustain our work.
