The band picked things up with Herbie Mann’s Memphis Underground, with its funky rock beat and a killer alto solo by Toby Thomas, a House Band regular who is leaving Peoria this month for new adventures in Montana. We’ll miss Toby and his great talent. Drummer Cory Flanigan gave us a nice solo over Jon BylerDann’s bass line, and Jon returned the favor with solo over crisp drumming by Cory. Charlie Parker’s Yardbird Suite was a hit with the crowd, with great bebop solos by the horn players as well as Billy Cook on guitar. The burner of the night was Cherokee, which Larry opened with a rubato cadenza. Fingers were flying on all of the solos, but the real treat was watching Cory and Jon set the high energy beat for the entire song. The Latin tune for the set was Yesterdays, and the band closed the set with Europa, in tribute to the late Jane Lady and her enduring commitment to live Jazz in Central Illinois. Lady on August 20, 2016. Jane was the President of the Central Illinois Jazz Society from 1990 until 2010, when she moved to Milwaukee to be near her son, Doug Lady, the founder of the Jazz Society. Jane was a passionate supporter of jazz and a driving force for the Jazz Society and the jazz scene throughout Central Illinois. Memorial donations for Jane Lady may be made to the Central Illinois Jazz Society (through www.cijs.org) or to the Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressivia Association (IFOPA), a research organization devoted to finding a cure of a disease which afflicts Jane’s great-granddaughter, Raina (through www.rainashines.org). Our thoughts are with Doug Lady and his family at this time of great loss. We will all miss Jane and are very grateful for everything that she did for the Jazz Society and for jazz for many years. ♪ John Miller and the Romaniacs will perform as the guest group for the Jazz Society’s September 18 program. The Romaniacs play a “gypsy jazz” style of music, based on that played by Django Reinhardt. John Miller leads the Romaniacs on guitar. Joining John are Randy Emmert on bass, Joe Park on guitar, and Larry Harms on clarinet and soprano sax. John Miller and the Romaniacs will begin their set at 7:15 p.m. The Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band, led by Larry Harms, will open the night with the first set at 6:00 p.m. ♪ We thank The Sally Weisenburg Trio for being our Jazz Society Guest Group for the August concert. The Trio presented a wide range of styles as Sally sang some “good music” for the Jazz Society. Sally sang and also played keyboards and keyboard bass, while husband, Don Berbaum was on guitar, and Tony Corpus played drums. We welcomed them for their first appearance at the Landmark – they were with us some years ago at Jumer’s. ♪ We thank Maureen O’Haenny and Ellen Monteith for serving as our MCs for the August program. We also thank Andy Bussan, Beth Bussan, Tom Howard and Ray Ellington for helping with the concert. The set kicked off with Ruth Brown’s Mama He Treat Your Daughter Mean, followed by the familiar Mambo Italiano, first recorded by Rosemary Clooney. In tribute to her youth growing up along Route 66 in Missouri, Sally and the band next gave a great rendition of Get Your Kicks On Route 66. They slowed things down a bit for Rainy Night In Georgia, a wonderful soul ballad released in 1969 by Brook Benton, and then moved on to the best song title of the night – Is You Is Or Is You Aint’ My Baby – getting us into the R&B mood. Some Delta Blues was next on the menu, with It’s My Own Fault – a traditional guitar blues tune written by John Lee Hooker and recorded famously by BB King. Don switched to a hollow-body guitar and channeled a lot of BB King during is great guitar solo. Tony’s tight bossa drum rhythms on Carlos Jobim’s Girl From Impanema took us to Brazil, which was especially timely since the Rio 2016 Olympics were having their closing ceremony that night and Impanema (a neighborhood in Rio) featured prominently in the Olympics. Sally and the band closed their set with Next Time You See Me, Things Won’t Be The Same, a boogie woogie style tune that had out toes tappin’. All in all, it was a great night of live music ranging from Jazz standard to Delta Blues to a little Rock & Roll, with some great Latin tunes here and there too.
