Barrett Lynch Intro for ATTC Paper Huckleberry Finn looks at the broken Sally who has just shown genuine concern for Huck’s health and, touched by her caring attitude, vows “never to do nothing to grieve her anymore,” (213) showing how his journey over the past couple weeks has deeply altered his character. The transformative trip that Huck has been on for weeks with Jim has completely shifted his attitude towards the world and allows him to grow a more comprehensive conscience. His new outlook on the world stems from the journey that he has been on, displayed through the even progression throughout the novel. Just as Huckleberry grow throughout his journey down the river, Jerry Cruncher’s character changes throughout his time during the French revolution, ultimately resulting in a newly formed man, a man that can be contrasted with Madame Defarge and her unwillingness to change. Though both Madame Defarge and Mr. Cruncher live through the French revolution, Mr. Cruncher’s experiences lead him to a new path of self recognition while Defarge continues to lead a life fueled by revenge.
