SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love
of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish in us all goodness and of your great mercy
keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
A Faith That Multiplies
A Wavering Faith (5:5-7)
On the shore of Galilee, crowds were pressing in to listen to Jesus. He used Peter’s boat as a
platform. After He had finished teaching, Jesus instructed Peter to take his boat out into deep
water. He wanted to transform Peter’s wavering faith to a sacrificial faith. He asked Peter to
drop his net in the middle of the day. Peter was reluctant because he knew that he best time for
fishing was before dawn. However, Jesus was asking him to trust His Word. Peter needed to
learn obedience and obedience brings blessings. On that day, they caught such a great
number of fish that their net was breaking, their boats were filled to overflowing and began
sinking.
A “Fear-of-God” Faith (5:8-10a)
As a result, Peter fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O
Lord!” This new revelation of the power and glory of Jesus has given Peter an acute sense of
his own sinfulness. At first he called Jesus “Master” but now he addressed Him as “Lord”.
There was a fearful amazement. Peter got a glimpse of who Jesus was and recognized his own
sinfulness.
A Fruitful Faith (5:10b)
Jesus told Peter that his future business would not be catching fish, bringing them from life to
death, but catching men, bringing them from death to life. There is a guaranteed result in the
passage. Jesus did not say that they would try to catch men. Jesus said from now on they
would be catching men.
A Sacrificial Faith (5:11)
So they pulled their boats to shore and turned their backs on the biggest catch of their lives and
followed Him. The left everything and followed Jesus. Peter’s career was changed. Peter
stopped catching fish for income and start catching men for God. Peter would go to be a great
soul-winner for Christ. Peter’s lifestyle was changed too. Suddenly there was nothing left. He
has to live according to what the gospel provided: “In the same way, the Lord commanded that
those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.” (1 Corinthians 9:14). From
that day, Peter lived a life of amazing faith until the end of his life where, according to church
tradition, he would be crucified up-side down as he felt that he was not worthy to be crucified in
a manner like His Lord.
May your faith be transformed by God in a powerful way today.

Monday (12/9) – COR: Family Day (12 Sept)
Pray that the many guests who are invited for this Family
Day will come and in their interaction with us, find the
church a warm and receptive place. Pray for good
weather and wisdom upon the planning committee. Pray
that we will use this opportunity to share of God’s love,
with both our words and actions.
Tuesday (13/9) – COR: A Faith that Multiplies
Pray that we will open our eyes to see the potential
harvest around us, in our workplace and among our own
friends and relatives. Pray that we not only feel for the
lost, but that we also put into action the expectancy and
hopefulness of harvest time.
Wednesday (14/9) – COR: EGM (18 Sept)
Pray for a sense of unity and purpose as the church
meets at EGM to discuss the fund-raising of: (i) Church
of Epiphany Building Project, in support of CCF (ii)

of our Chinese congregation. Pray that all deliberations
are blessed with godly wisdom.
Thursday (15/9) – World: Namibia (Africa)
Namibia is a stable country rich in natural resources, but
there is significant risk of strife and collapse if able
governance and communal harmony do not prevail.
Pray that the nation’s leaders would address the issues
of poverty, land ownership and AIDS with wisdom and
determination. Pray for the church that current and
future pastors are trained and formed to God’s
standards. Pray also that the mainline training institutes
would capture a love and respect for God’s Word.
