he Fire Science Program is designed to
prepare students who are working in the fire
service to assume a leadership role in their
department. The program builds on basic
recruit concepts and promotes critical thinking
at the strategic level providing for a more
efficient and safe emergency operations scene.

Student must complete 15 semester hours from
State Certification Classes
Through a partnership with the Alabama Fire College,
Jefferson State students can receive both State and
Pro Board certification for certain classes taken as
part of the Fire Science Program. This allows the
student to obtain professional certification while also
completing degree requirements.

Students planning to transfer to a four-year
college should complete the following:
*ENG 102 instead of SPH 107
**A second lab science course
Credit for Non-Traditional
Academic Work
A maximum of 20 hours of non-traditional credit may
be awarded and applied toward graduation. Official
certification of completion of approved Fire Academy
work must be submitted. Certifications must be either
an academic transcript from an accredited college,
certificate of completion, or a letter on official
letterhead from the Fire Academy. Upon completion
of six hours of approved Fire Science courses at
Jefferson State, students will be awarded credit for:
*Firefighter I / II Certification
*Apparatus Operator Certification
Additional credit will be granted for fire service
certifications that meet relevant national standards
including but not limited to:
*Hazmat Technician Certification
*Fire Instructor I, II, and III
*Fire Investigator
*Fire Inspector I, II, and III
*Fire Officer I, II, III, and IV
*Fire Department Safety Officer
*Public Fire and Life Safety Educator I and II
