By coaching me, as a parent, to be a good practice partner for my child, I have shared hours and hours of work and effort with my child...On the outside, my daughter’s grown from a darling three year old with a pretend Kleenex-box violin to a tall seven year old who relishes the fast, tricky songs in mid-Book 2. On the inside, she’s become someone who cares surprisingly deeply about music. -Parent of seven year old Suzuki violin student As part of our vibrant and thriving Suzuki community, your child will experience learning in a nurturing, supportive and spirited environment where high expectations are balanced with joyfulness and FUN. Utilizing the proven techniques of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s “Talent Education” Method, children as young as three years-old learn their instrument through a combination of private lessons, weekly group classes, group recitals, solo recitals, and workshops with world-renowned guest instructors. SPCM Suzuki teachers are committed to developing expressive talent right from the start. Technique, balance, and proper form are emphasized in the beginning stages so that the player can have their heart invested in musical expression. One parent attends all lessons and practices at home with their child. The parent is responsible for setting up a home environment which promotes and nurtures the development of their child’s talent. The parent must commit to making music a part of everyday life through daily practice, listening to Suzuki recordings daily, and listening to recordings of other fine music. Suzuki group classes are essential to the process and are an opportunity for children to learn with and benefit from their peers. Group classes also provide community and support for parents. Music reading classes are part of the curriculum as SPCM Suzuki teachers are committed to excellence and competency in music reading and music theory. Group Classes also offer students an opportunity to explore music outside the Suzuki literature and other styles such as jazz, blues, ethnic music, and fiddling. HOW TO GET STARTED 1. Contact the SPCM Office to register as a prospective student. 2. Observe Suzuki group classes on Saturday mornings (minimum: two sessions). 3. Observe private lessons to determine which instructor is the right match for you and your child. Suzuki “Parent Education” classes will take place either during private or group lessons, depending on the time of year and the number of beginning students at that time. Parent Education classes will be set up in a way that works best for each family. 4. Read “Nurtured by Love” by Shinichi Suzuki. 5. Visit suzukiassociation.org for more information about the Suzuki Method. 7 SUZUKI STRING PROGRAM Violin, Viola, and Cello Private lessons are $30.50 per half hour and teachers will schedule between 30 and 34 lessons for the academic year.
