Festival, and an Early Music Festival.
COFFEE CONCERTS

CALENDAR
The Saint Paul Conservatory of Music hosts many events through the year.
Below are events for Fall Semester. Times and places are subject to change.
Please check www.thespcm.org for the latest events.
Julie Elhard, instructor
This ensemble class is for viol players who have played a minimum of five years and who
can play independently on complicated rhythmic music of the Renaissance and Baroque.
Emphasis is on single line interpretation of polyphonic music, and becoming aware of the
role each part plays in the whole. Each player is responsible for their own part, therefore
no doubling. This class strives for musical expression and understanding to bring about
an artful interpretation of ancient music.

VIOLA DA GAMBA FOR CHILDREN
Julie Elhard, instructor
The viola da gamba is a string instrument from the Renaissance and Baroque time period
and is related to the guitar. It has six strings, frets and uses an underhand bow hold. This
is a delightful instrument for children to learn because it cradles itself upon the lap and
has irresistible tunes of the period. The viol has a sweet, easy sound and comes in sizes to
fit children as they grow. Instruments are available at the Conservatory for a small rental
fee of $50 per academic year.
RECORDER FOR CHILDREN
Jean Allison Olson, instructor
The recorder is a perfect start for a wind instrument. Music of the Medieval, Renaissance
and Baroque periods give a wealth of pieces to enjoy in addition to the Suzuki literature
for the instrument. Recorders come in a family of sizes which can easily fit into any
child’s hands as they grow. In addition to early music, students will also learn modern
music written for recorders including Klezmer, Latin, Blues, and Ragtime.

SUZUKI PROGRAM
How lucky that we found the SPCM! ...The instructors amazingly match high
standards and excellence with great enthusiasm and care for these young children. By coaching me, as a parent, to be a good practice partner for my child, I
have shared hours and hours of work and effort with my child...On the outside,
my daughter’s grown from a darling three year old with a pretend Kleenex-box violin to a tall seven year old who relishes the fast, tricky songs in mid-Book 2. On
the inside, she’s become someone who cares surprisingly deeply about music.
-Parent of seven year old Suzuki violin student
As part of our vibrant and thriving Suzuki community, your child will experience learning
in a nurturing, supportive and spirited environment where high expectations are balanced
with joyfulness and FUN. Utilizing the proven techniques of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s
“Talent Education” Method, children as young as three years-old learn their instrument
through a combination of private lessons, weekly group classes, group recitals, solo
recitals, and workshops with world-renowned guest instructors.
SPCM Suzuki teachers are committed to developing expressive talent right from the
start. Technique, balance, and proper form are emphasized in the beginning stages so
that the player can have their heart invested in musical expression. One parent attends all
lessons and practices at home with their child. The parent is responsible for setting up a
home environment which promotes and nurtures the development of their child’s talent.
The parent must commit to making music a part of everyday life through daily practice,
listening to Suzuki recordings daily, and listening to recordings of other fine music.
Suzuki group classes are essential to the process and are an opportunity for children
to learn with and benefit from their peers. Group classes also provide community and
support for parents. Music reading classes are part of the curriculum as SPCM Suzuki
teachers are committed to excellence and competency in music reading and music theory.
Group Classes also offer students an opportunity to explore music outside the Suzuki
literature and other styles such as jazz, blues, ethnic music, and fiddling.
HOW TO GET STARTED
1. Contact the SPCM Office to register as a prospective student.
2. Observe Suzuki group classes on Saturday mornings (minimum: two
sessions).
3. Observe private lessons to determine which instructor is the right match
for you and your child. Suzuki “Parent Education” classes will take place
either during private or group lessons, depending on the time of year and
the number of beginning students at that time. Parent Education classes
will be set up in a way that works best for each family.
4. Read “Nurtured by Love” by Shinichi Suzuki.
5. Visit suzukiassociation.org for more information about the Suzuki Method.
7
