CONVERGENCE (KUH N-VUR-JUH NS) The convergence of the Schuylkill River and the Delaware river provides a difficult challenge for many boaters. Convergence (n.): the state of separate elements joining or coming together Synonyms: Antonyms: PLEASE REPEAT AFTER ME… •The definition of the word convergence is the state of separate elements joining or coming together WARM-UP Give two examples of things you can think of that would converge, or come together. Tell me WHY they might come together, also. Please make sure that you are using the vocab word, and that all answers are school appropriate! Be prepared to share. DIGRESSION (DIH-GRESH-UHN) The professor was supposed to be talking about neuroscience, but his digression was so longwinded that no one could remember the original subject of the lecture. Digression (n.): the act of deviating from the main topic. Synonyms: Antonyms: PLEASE REPEAT AFTER ME… •The definition of the word digression is the act of deviating from the main topic. WARM-UP Who do you know that digresses the most? Do you enjoy these digressions, or do you wish the person would just stay on topic? Explain! Her capricious nature allows her to easily jump from one subject to the next without a true transition in between. The asides are often entertaining. Please repeat after me… DISDAIN (DIS-DEYN) The freshmen on the bus disdained the seniors because the older kids always felt like they had a right to pick on the younger ones. DISDAIN (N.): A FEELING OF SCORN OR CONTEMPT Synonyms: Antonyms: PLEASE REPEAT AFTER ME… The definition of the word disdain is a feeling of scorn or contempt. WARM-UP Please give examples of two things that you disdain, or feel true contempt toward. These should not be people per say, but situations or things. Also, tell me why! Please be sure to use the vocab word in your response, and polite, school appropriate answers only. Be prepared to share. Example: I disdain getting on the Septa bus by myself for a long ride filled with kids/people who do not seem to have any regard for human existence. Throwing items, spitting, cursing, spewing racial slurs, taking multiple seats, and talking back to authority figures all are included in that list of things that I disdain because I find them rude and disgraceful.
