When I’m Gone - Eminem (Courtesy of Zara and Roy of M 4 U Studio, Dehiwela) EMINEM: Naughty lyrics in “When I’m Gone” hame! Shame! Shame! Believe me, it’s REALLY happening. And it’s not something new to the radio scene here. We did highlight such shameful acts some years ago, but no remedial measures seem to have been taken (or implemented) and these ‘devils in disguise’ continue to harass listeners (the young females, in particular) whenever they phone in to make a request. A very keen reader of both “Star Track” and “Show Vision” in the ‘Sunday Island”, buzzed us last week to express total dissatisfaction at the way certain DJs behave while on duty. She was shocked, she said, when she called a particular station late night to make a request. She was doing it for the very first time, but what she experienced was shocking, repelling and utterly disgusting. Of course, the DJ concerned was extra nice and obliged the caller with the requested song — but not before he pried into her private life. And he was only concerned about the sexual side of her life. He inquired from her whether she likes six and went on to boast about his sexual exploits. He wanted her to Innocent young girls vulnerable to their filthy talk describe herself... and also what she was wearing! And the ‘let’s meet’ bait was ultimately put to her. Obviously, the listener concerned has vowed never to phone in whenever this particular DJ is on air. In the past, too, there mill year then... The usual talk-line for openers is ‘Have you a boyfriend?’ ‘Have you had sex?” And ‘Can we meet?’ Then the explicits begin. And what are those in charge doing about this very dangerous scene? Aren’t they promoting some kind of child abuse in a subtle way ‘cos a good many of the callers are young teenagers? These guys with sick minds should never be allowed to go on air where the opportunity for them exist to lure innocent young girls with their filthy talk. Remember, not all radio DJs fall into this category. The good guys are there, but the bad ones should be apprehended and punished accordingly. It’s a shame what these guys do under the guise of disc jockeys. Emirates scene for Geldof Humanitarian campaigner, Bob Geldof — undoubtedly, one of the most well-known pop personalities of his era, was in Dubai recently to speak at the “In Honour of Africa” benefit to raise awareness among Arab businesses on the global fight against poverty. Remember, it was Geldof who did so much to help those affected by the dreadful famine that was plaguing Ethiopia is 1984. Shocked by the horrific pictures that he saw on television, Geldof organised the celebrated Band Aid aggregation for the charity record which he wrote, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The record inspired the subsequent mammoth Live Aid extravaganza in which Geldof herded together rock’s elite to play before a worldwide television audience of over 1,000,000,000. And last year he did Live 8. In Dubai, Geldof attended the Dubai International Film Festival’s gala evening, themed “Honouring Africa”. Geldof, by the way, started out as a member of the group Nitelife Thugs, which subsequently evolved into the Boomtown Rats, one of the first groups to emerge during the punk/New Wave explosion of 1976/77.
