Locate NEWSletter Issue 1 January 2014 COMMUNICATE-COMMUNITY Welcome to the LOCATE newsletter! LOCATE means “local media for sustainable community action in Europe”, that is, giving people at risk of social exclusion an opportunity to make their voice heard by using all kinds of media. Everyday we are overwhelmed by a mass of news items that we listen to on the radio, watch on TV, receive on our smartphones or that we simply find when surfing the internet. It seems that we are listening to the same news over and over again: political troubles, financial scandals, tragedies all over the world, etc. But, what normal people have to say? Do we know about the everyday problems or successes of people around us? Do we know what “forgotten” people live in their daily lifes (their hopes, fears, problems, challenges)? We know that unemployed people, people with mental issues, people living in rural areas, migrants, people with low incomes, people with any dissability… all of them have important things to say, but it seems like the world doesn’t want to give them an opportunity to express themselves. LOCATE wants to give them tools to be an active and sustainable part of the society as a community. We are stronger if we work together, we should take advantage of being part of a community and feel proud about it. Todays’ knowledge society offers us a lot of instruments to reach people all over the world: blogs, radio, TV, photos, videos, social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Youtube, etc. LOCATE wants to use a mix of these media to empower people at risk of social exclusion within their communities: to help them understood and interact with other groups of people with similar problems, interests, characteristics, aims, etc. Community Learning Ambassadors will be choosen from within the community. They will be specifically trained to lead the learning process in their communities, empowering the rest of their members using peer education and support. These community reporters will talk about their daily lifes using the most appropriate media. Several workshops and local events will be organized and the work of the participants will be published on an on-line platform so anybody can access them. This project has been funded with support of the Lifelong Learning Programme, Grundtvig sub-programme, from the European Commission. News from Leeds, UK LOCATE project is led jointly by WEA (The Workers’ Educational Association of the Region-Yorksire&Humber) and by The MRS Consultancy, both British organizations. Asset Techonology from Greece, Consorzio ABN from Italy, PROISNV (Pactul Regional Nord-Vest pentru Ocupare si incluziune sociala) from Romania and Fundación INTRAS from Spain are the other partners working to create this inclusive model to empower adults from disadvantage communities. Sustaining quality learning and an active role in our community are our raison d’être. The first activity for the LOCATE project was the kick-off meeting that the consortium held in Leeds, UK, on 19 and 20th November 2013. Partners met at the headquarters of WEA and had the opportunity to discuss and plan the main activities that we are going to perform within the project. Also, we agreed on the logo that will represent this initiative and which will be the flag of the community reporters that are going to be engaged.
