My laboratory has a long-standing interest in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to Alzheimer’s

Research interest:
The research of my laboratory is focused on understanding how genomic integrity is maintained in normal cells and how
genomic instability arises in cancer cells. In addition, we seek to identify new ways to exploit the genomic instability in cancer
cells for cancer therapy. I and my colleagues have extensively studied how DNA damage is sensed and signaled in human
cells. In particular, we have made important contributions to the understanding of how the ATR checkpoint pathway is
activated by DNA damage and DNA replication problems. Our work has laid the foundation for current models of DNA
damaging signaling and DNA damage responses. My lab has also identified specific vulnerabilities in distinct subsets of
cancers that render cancer cells susceptible to inhibition of the ATR checkpoint. These studies have provided new opportunities
for targeted cancer therapy.

Short Biography
Dr. Ren-Ke Li, MD, PhD is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery at the
University of Toronto. Dr. Li is also a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute, University Health Network
working in the field of stem cell transplantation and tissue engineering. He is the recipient of the Canada Research Chair in
Cardiac Regeneration (Tier 1) of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and was a Career Investigator of the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Dr. Li has been on the forefront in the field of cell transplantation and tissue engineering. In 1996, he published the first
demonstration that cells transplanted into myocardial scar tissue survived, differentiated into muscle tissue, and improved heart
function. Over 25 years his research group has defined muscle cell transplantation for Cardiac Repair, followed by stem cell
transplantation for Cardiac Regeneration. Both cell repair and regeneration technologies have been translated to clinical
application at Phase I and II levels. Since the patients with heart failure are aged population, currently, his research group is
attempting to determine the mechanisms by which transplanted cells exert their beneficial effects by Rejuvenation of aged stem
cells and aged recipients. Clarifying these mechanisms of Repair, Regeneration and Rejuvenation will allow them to develop
the “next generation” of cell therapy for restoration of heart function of aged patients.
Because of his contribution to cardiovascular science, Dr. Ren-Ke Li was an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of
Health Sciences, the International Academy of Cardiovascular Science and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. He has
received several national and international awards, including Scientific Award, Chinese American Medical Society; Clemson
Award for Applied Research, Society for Biomaterials; Professional Achievement Award, Chinese Professionals
Association of Canada; The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, The Governor General of Canada; Premier’s
Research Excellence Award, Ontario Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology; Lister Prize, University of Toronto; Mel
Silverman Mentorship Award, University of Toronto. Dr. Li has published 232 peer-reviewed papers in very good Journals.
He has been invited to contribute several commentaries and viewpoint articles and is an international opinion leader in his
field.
Dr. Li is a long time contributor to local SCBA activities. As a past President of the Toronto SCBA chapter, Dr. Li serves as a
key executive committee member providing an important leadership role to the chapter.

Research Interests:
Our longstanding interests are elucidating the mechanisms by which genomic instability is induced and how it drives
tumorigenesis. We focus on mammalian homologous recombination and its associated cellular processes that contribute to
error-free DNA repair and replication fidelity. Using a BRCA2 interacting protein BCCIP as the platform, we strive to
understand how DNA replication and recombination dysfunctions during S-phase may contribute to mitotic chromosome
instability. We extensively use genetically engineered mouse models to understand the confounding roles of cell growth
essential genes involved in the maintenance of genomic integrity in distinct stages of tumorigenesis such as tumor initiation
and progression.
SCBA Service Statement:
I joined SCBA in 2002 as a lifetime member. In the past, I have organized (and served as the co-chair of) several scientific
sessions and attended most of the bi-annual SCBA meetings since 2002. In 2013, I was invited to serve as a guest editor
for a special issue of “Cancer Biomarkers and Targeted Therapies” on the official SCBA journal of Cell & Biosciences, and
became an editorial board member of the journal in 2015. I have served as a scientific reviewer in multiple capabilities,
including as study section chairs for US DOD breast and ovarian cancer research programs, and NSF of China. As a
division chief, and a program leader of NCI designated comprehensive cancer center, I am also an experienced academic
administrator. If elected to the SCBA Nomination Committee, I will use my scientific expertise and leadership skills to
promote the recognitions of the diverse range of scientific achievements by our members.

Research Interests:
My research is to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of acute lung injury, especially in lung transplantation. We
demonstrated that lung epithelial cells as a source of cytokines in inflammatory response, intracellular signal transduction
pathways as therapeutic targets, and roles of multiple cell death pathways in acute lung injury. We have developed nanoparticle
based drug delivery systems. A drug discovery/delivery pipeline has been developed, including cell culture for high throughput
screening for therapeutic targets, mouse/rat lung transplant models for in vivo testing, and pig lung transplant and ex vivo lung
perfusion system for pre-clinical trials. We also discovered a novel adaptor protein, XB130, for signal transduction, and
demonstrated its role in cell survival, proliferation, migration and regulation of gene expression. Using xb130 knock mice, we
are studying the role of XB130 in lung injury and repair.

Research Interest:
My lab investigates DNA translesion synthesis, mismatch and excision repair, and V(D)J recombination. We
discovered the ATPase activity of MutL, the proofreading function of the MutS ATPase, and the mechanochemical coupling nature of ATP hydrolysis in a molecular motor. While studying mechanisms of cancer avoidance
by translesion DNA polymerases, recently we have discovered the three-metal-ion mechanism in nucleic acid
synthesis and degradation.

Research Interest:
I have studied inherited kidney diseases for 27 years. After practicing medicine for six years, I moved to Finland and started
research by cloning the first kidney disease gene (Alport syndrome) (Science). At Yale, I cloned another basement membrane
collagen gene and showed its disease association (Science). In 1993, I established my lab at BWH, and began biochemical and
transcriptional studies of type IV collagen and Alport syndrome. I expanded my interest to clone PKD genes in 1994 and
started to focus on PKD in 1998.
I have devoted my time largely to laboratory research, as well as training research and clinical fellows and graduate and
undergraduate students in the lab. We have created the first targeted mouse model for PKD, and generated over ten
conventional, conditional, and inducible mouse models for both dominant and recessive forms of PKD—which led to the
understanding of a critical role for PC1 in multiple organ development, injury, and repair (Nature Genetics). We identified four
novel members of the polycystin family (Nature). We were first to demonstrate that polycystins are Ca2+-permeable cation
channels, that PC1 acts as a G-protein coupled receptor, and that PC1 and PC2 mutually regulate each other’s function. We
showed the first evidence of PC1 and PC2 function on primary cilia and Ca2+ signaling (Nature Genetics). We identified other
disease proteins—including ARPKD, nephronophthisis, and Bardt Biedl syndrome proteins—as components of the primary
cilia and/or polycystin network, and showed that polycystins regulate the cell cycle, planar cell polarity, cell migration, and
actin cytoskeleton integrity. Our current efforts are to elucidate the polycystin protein network, and to develop PKD
therapeutics by balancing the network using mouse models.

Research Interest
My lab studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of axon guidance, synapse formation, and assembly, stability and
regeneration of neural circuits. We identify molecular guidance cues that provide directional information for axon wiring in
vivo as well as signal transduction pathways and cell biological mechanisms underlying growth cone turning. We also study
synaptogenesis and how specific synaptic connection patterns emerge from the interplay of molecular guidance system and
neural activity. We are interested in how central nervous system responds to traumatic injury and develop therapeutic
approaches to promote axonal and neuronal survival to combat degenerative disorders and improve axon regeneration and
functional recovery following spinal cord injury.

Research Interests:
Aberrant cell cycle regulation leads to various human disease including cancer and cardiovascular disorders. Proper cell cycle
transitions are driven by waves of ubiquitin-dependent degradation of key cell cycle regulators by APC or SCF, the two major
E3 ligase complexes. The major focus of research in my laboratory is aimed at understanding how APC and SCF activities
contribute towards cell cycle regulation and subsequent tumor formation. More specifically, I am interested in elucidating the

underlying mechanisms that define the oscillation of APC and SCF activity in different cell cycle phases. To achieve
these

goals, my lab will use multidisciplinary approaches including biochemical and genetic analysis. In the long term, I hope that a
better understanding of the multilayer regulation of the delicate proteolysis pathways will lead us to the design of more
efficient intervention strategies to combat cancer, cardiovascular disorders and other human diseases.

Dr. Feng’s laboratory 1) investigates the biophysical and pharmacological properties of ion channels, 2) determines calciumdependent regulatory mechanisms of neurodevelopment, neural plasticity, neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration, and 3)

Research Interests:
Our research program focuses on understanding the signaling pathways that maintain genome integrity, including the DNA
damage checkpoint and protein sumoylation. Genetic studies in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have established a major
role of DNA damage checkpoint kinases in suppressing gross chromosomal rearrangements (GCRs), a hallmark of human
cancers. We have developed quantitative phospho-proteomics to identify and characterize substrates of DNA damage
checkpoint kinases and investigated the regulation of the DNA damage checkpoint kinase cascade. More recently, we have
discovered that SUMO E3 ligases have a major role in suppressing non-allelic homologous recombination mediated
chromosomal translocations. We have developed quantitative mass spectrometry based assay to measure intracellular protein
sumoylation on a proteome-wide scale, and used this approach to develop a comprehensive view of the enzyme-substrate

relationship in the SUMO pathways, including SUMO E3 ligases that catalyze the attachment of SUMO to its substrates
as

well as SUMO isopeptidases that cleave SUMO off its targets. Our current studies focus on the role of protein sumoylation in
diverse areas of chromosome biology, including DNA replication, gene silencing and chromosome segregation. We are further
extending our findings using yeast as a model system to human cells and study the conservation of the underlying molecular
mechanisms and their relevance to cancer etiology.

A. Research Interest
My laboratory studies the fundamental mechanism of immune recognition and cancer biology.
We have been a driving force in elucidating the mechanism by which the innate immune system
discriminates microbial infection and aseptic tissue injuries in the last decade, we have devoted
a major effort to studying the basic mechanism of tumorigenesis. We pioneered the concept of
an X-linked tumor suppressor gene and established a surprisingly critical role for, and
therapeutic targeting of, hypoxia-inducible factor in the function of stem cells in hematological
malignancies. The cross-fertilization between studies on immune recognition and tumor
biology allowed us to develop a novel approach that enables the immune system to recognize cancer without the constraints
imposed by mechanisms evolved to tune down innate immunity to tissue injuries.

Research Interest:
My laboratory has a longstanding interest in mechanisms of immune system aging. We focus on three areas: 1) role of telomere
and telomerase in T cell function and aging, 2) general and antigen-specific ab TCR repertoires and the impact of their change
with aging on immune function, and 3) molecular mechanism of memory T cell formation, maintenance, and aging with
emphasis on transcription and epigenetic regulation. We conduct our studies in human using the participants from the
Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (BLSA) and in various genetically modified mouse models. Our studies have shown
that 1) the in vivo dynamic changes of telomere length in lymphocytes and monocytes with age as well as age-related decline
of telomerase activity in T and B lymphocytes; 2) distinct features of general and anti-viral ab TCR repertoires in human; and
3) epigenetic regulation of differential gene expression in naïve and memory CD8 T cells.

Research Interest
We are interested in the sex differences in development and cancer. There
are several ongoing NIH-sponsored projects, which include the sex differences in
bladder cancer incidence and mortality, the sexually dimorphic mechanisms of
genital tubercle differentiation, the epigenetic basis of urinary tract infection and
inflammation, and congenital heart disease related to the outflow tract formation.
Past Service to SCBA
I am currently serving as president of the Boston Biology and Biotechnology
(BBB), a professional association of Chinese Principal Investigators at the great
Boston area. We are current working with the leaderships of BBB and SCBA
aiming to establish a local SCBA chapter at the New England area.

Research Interest:
My research program focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying tumor-stroma interaction in
cancer metastasis. We demonstrated that cancer-associated inflammation is critical in the functional
switch of TGF-β from a suppressor to a promoter. We are currently investigating how myeloid-specific
TGF-β signaling modulates host inflammation/immune response in cancer and stroke. We continue to
understand roles of inflammation in the premetastatic environment in cancer cell colonization using
molecular biology, cancer biology, as well as integrated genomic-wide genetics and epigenetics
approaches.

Research Interests:
Our lab studies the roles of energy sensing and metabolism in cancer. Specifically, we are interested in the
questions: 1) how normal/cancer cells sense energy availability, 2) how cancer cell adapt to survive and grow
under energy stress, and 3) how to translate our understanding of energy sensing/metabolism in cancer into
novel effective cancer therapeutics. A deeper understanding of the biological processes linking energy
sensing/metabolism to cancer will provide novel insight for cancer therapy and other diseases.
