April is Na onal Volunteer Apprecia on month and each year during this me the Corpora on of Delta hosts two Volunteer Apprecia on events to acknowledge and thank all of our wonderful volunteers who keep our seniors recrea on centres opera ng smoothly. This year, the Kennedy Volunteer Apprecia on event will be held on Thursday, April 20. If you were an ac ve volunteer at Kennedy during 2016, please pick up your invita on at the customer service desk. We are incorpora ng Canada’s 150 Birthday into this year’s theme, “Volunteers… Canada’s Greatest Natural Resource” and are encouraging everyone to wear RED. Eva Busich‐Veloso is the Seniors Support Coordinator for the Corpora on of Delta. Eva’s role is to connect people 50+ to services and resources in the larger community. For example, Eva can assist in finding housing op ons, informa on on health and wellness, and government programs. Eva works at Kennedy every Wednesday from 8:30am to 4pm. I would like to acknowledge and thank three volunteers who have decided not to let their names stand for another term; special thanks to Lois Saker and Franca Babuin and Trudean Olson. Lois was the Office Director for 10 years; Franca was Director of Volunteers for the same period of me; and Trudean was the secretary for four years. Lois, Franca and Trudean are to be commended for their dedica on to Kennedy all these years. They will con nue to be ac ve members, volunteering in different areas of the centre. Paul Eschbach, one of the members of the Kennedy Photography Interest Group, recently won a Silver Medal for an image he submi ed to the Canadian Associa on for Photographic Art, Pacific Zone Print Challenge 2017. The image, Warmth in a Frosted Forest, is hanging on the wall near the cafeteria. WELL DONE Paul! I would like to welcome our new, incoming board member Rob Hebden. The Delta Seniors Bus Program in North Delta has provided over 20,500 rides since its incep on! Join us for an excellent concert by the Burnsview Symphonic Ensemble and the Burnsview Concert Band. These students perform a wide range of music from jazz and swing to classical symphonic music. Included in this spring concert are pieces from West Side Story, An American in Paris and Pixar movie themes. This FREE concert includes light refreshments. Nat Bailey Stadium Winter Market Sat, Apr 22 (Earth Day) Theatre Group Mon, Apr 24‐Jun 26 The bus will leave Kennedy at 9:30am and return between 1:45‐2pm. 1‐3pm This brand new program is open to anyone who would like to challenge their abili es, meet new people, and enjoy the experience of ac ng or par cipa ng in a produc on in various genres, including plays and sketches. This program culminates in a performance. All experiences and abili es are welcome, including those who have never acted before but always wanted to, and those who have acted previously and want to do it again. The program includes ac ng skills, voice work, movement for the stage, and lots of fun. Please preregister for this exci ng new program by Tuesday, April 18. If you are interested, don’t wait! Official Opening Day of North Delta Lawn Bowling Season begins Saturday, April 29 at 1pm. The Chronic Pain Self‐Management Program is a six‐ week workshop that helps people with chronic pain to be er manage their symptoms and their daily lives. This FREE workshop provides informa on and teaches prac cal skills. It gives people the confidence and mo va on they need to manage the challenges of living with chronic pain. This program is of relevance to adults experiencing: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (such as chronic neck, shoulder, back pain, etc.) Whiplash injuries Chronic pelvic pain Post‐surgical pain that lasts beyond 6 months Neuropathic pain (o en caused by trauma) Post‐stroke or central pain Persistent headache Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diabetes and who have neuropathy Severe muscular pain due to condi ons such as Mul ple Sclerosis This program is facilitated by The University of Victoria – Centre on Aging. Simply preregister for this workshop by calling our customer services desk at 604‐594‐2717. Kennedy Art Show! A en on all ar sts! Kennedy will be hos ng the annual Seniors Week Art Show June 5‐10. This is a people’s choice art show with a new twist: there will be one grand category to encompass as many formats of fine arts as is possible. This includes photography, pain ng, drawing, all forms of needle work (Brazilian embroidery, lace, pe t point, etc.). The only restric on is that your artwork must be in a frame which can be mounted on our gallery wall. Last year’s art show generated a lot of excitement and interest, and we look forward to an even more successful show this year. More details will be available in the May newsle er.
