Including celebrations from around the world, for example Diwali and of course Christmas. Reception have been enjoying watching the changing of the season from autumn into winter. They began the festive season with an Advent spiral, then there was great excitement when we were visited by St Nicholas on 6th December. They have been busy practising their songs and dances for the Nativity performances this week and making shopping bags and candles for Enterprise Week. They even managed to fit in some Maths and English! Y1 have had a great half term learning about their topic ‘Moon Zoom’. They had an exciting start to their topic as they discovered a spaceship crash in the school yard. They found different materials and discussed the properties of these. They then wrote a recount of the exciting event. In history, they learnt all about Neil Armstrong and created wonderful sketches of him on the moon. In D and T they explored wheels and axels and made their own moon buggies. They also carried out a science investigation of making an astronaut fly. Y2 have been busy with their topic ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’. They have enjoyed looking at and creating, work by different artists. As part of their topic and for the Christmas Fair, they have done some baking. They made chocolate slabs and stained glass window biscuits. They enjoyed getting messy! Y3 have done a fantastic cross curricular topic called ‘Scrumdidliumptious’. This involved linking healthy food choices in their topic work to writing instructions for cake recipes in English and measurements in Maths. They also created posters in computing for the Christmas Fair, where their delicious cakes sold really well! Y4 have enjoyed their topic ‘Potions’! They looked at how to write instructions to make potions and how to write reports about a Wizard’s best friend, the Woodseats Fire Breathing Dragon. In maths, they focused on multiplication and division. They used these skills to investigate what their total profit was from the Christmas Fair (suffice it to say that they did very well!) Y5 have been learning all about the wonders of space! They have found out the different features of each of the planets in our solar system and have written mnemonics to help them to remember their order! They have researched the work of astronauts such as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Helen Sharman. In literacy, they wrote some extremely silly explanations based on the book ‘Until I Met Dudley’ and produced instructions to explain how to make the wonderful bracelets they made for the Christmas Fair. Y6 have been enjoying their topic ‘Darwin’s Delights’ learning about evolution and adaptation. They especially enjoyed their trip to the University of Sheffield, where they learned about sea creatures! They have also carried out a fun science experiment pretending to be hungry birds, using pegs as beaks to investigate how beak shape has evolved to suit the food source. Well done everyone! After School Clubs: The two choir clubs are continuing after the holiday and also the morning recorder groups and the Spanish Club. Pyjama Drama is continuing for Y1’s and Y2’s on Wednesdays, and the sports clubs will also return. Please see our website for more information about all our clubs. The Christmas Fair on 9th December was a great success! There were lots of stalls and each class sold items that they had made during Enterprise Week. The classes made a combined profit of £1,160.64 – well done everyone! Thank you to everyone who came to the fair and supported us. Thank you also to everyone who sent in the marvellous cakes which brought in a good amount, and thank you also to everyone who brought in toys for the toy stall. Friends of Woodseats raised a fantastic amount and we would like to thank them for all their hard work in organising the Fair and the Christmas Raffle. We would also like to thank Father Christmas who took time out of his busy schedule to see us during the Christmas Fair and also visited all the classrooms today and brought presents for all the children. Pupils and staff wore Christmas jumpers today and from that, we are raising money which we will be donating to the Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day appeal. We would like to thank Friends of Woodseats who organised and paid for the entertainment at the Christmas parties for KS1 and KS2. Barney Baloney entertained the KS1 children on Wednesday and the KS2 children enjoyed their disco yesterday afternoon with the DJ, Daniel Synyer. We would also like to thank the many volunteers who come into school to help with lots of different things including keeping our library tidy, reading with the children, baking and helping with school trips. It is very much appreciated by all the staff and pupils. Many of these volunteers were able to join us for our Mince Pie Morning yesterday and enjoyed listening to our Choir who sang some beautiful Christmas songs. Nativity performances took place this week in Nursery, Reception and KS1. Thank you to everyone who came along to watch, we had some lovely feedback from parents and families and the children really enjoyed practising and performing their plays. We were very excited to hear that we came first in the recent Tesco Bags of Help scheme and would like to thank everyone who voted for us in the local Tesco stores. We can’t wait to spend the money we were awarded on our Nursery and Reception outdoor spaces!
