Raise money for your community group and help the environment. 1 Saving even the smallest piece of metal can really help your community group, and our planet. 2 Fundraising for your sports team or favorite charity just got a whole lot easier — and better for the environment. Schnitzer Steel’s Scrap Drive pays pricing normally reserved for higher volume accounts for all kinds of scrap metal that your non-profit group collects from family, friends, neighbours and community members. It is our way of contributing to your good cause, and helping save precious energy and resources. When metal is re-used instead of thrown away, we reduce the need for new landfills, reduce pollution from mining and processing virgin minerals, save 75% of the energy used to process raw minerals, reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the need to extract resources from the earth, and conserve resources for our children’s future. To participate in the Scrap Drive program, all you have to do is go to www.scrapdrive.com and fill out an application form. Scrap Drives generally run for 30 days at a time, but can be extended with permission. Once approved, your non-profit group simply goes to the website to download the Scrap Drive tool kit. The tool kit contains all of the materials you need to launch your fundraising program — from flyers and ad templates to buttons for your Scrap Drive team. 03 After kick-starting your Scrap Drive, you have 30 days to collect even the smallest pieces of metal. Then you bring these small loads of scrap metal into your local Schnitzer metal recycling center (go to www.scrapdrive.com/locations to find the location nearest you). Each load of metal that is brought in as part of your Scrap Drive is recorded electronically. At the end of the 30 days, you will be mailed a cheque for the total amount of metal collected. Anyone can drop metal off at our recycling center on your behalf; they simply have to let our counter staff know that their scrap is being contributed to your organization’s Scrap Drive. (The process is a bit different if you are dropping of a scrap vehicle at one of our Pick-n-Pull stores. Go to www.scrapdrive.com to learn more.) Did you know? Scrap metal is divided into two types: ferrous and nonferrous. Ferrous metal contains iron, and is used to make things like cars, household appliances, steel beams, garden tools, nuts and bolts, cast iron pans, and food tins. All ferrous metals are magnetic and rust/corrode easily. Nonferrous metal does not contain iron. Examples are aluminum, copper, lead, zinc and brass. Nonferrous metals are not magnetic, and are generally resistant to rust/corrosion. Nonferrous metal is usually much more valuable than ferrous (sometimes 10, 25 or 50 times as much), so it really pays to use a magnet when you are hunting for scrap! In fact, Schnitzer Steel will be distributing magnets to community groups participating in the Scrap Drive to help them identify nonferrous metals. 04 Name Composition Examples of uses Pure metal 3 Mixture of aluminum, copper and manganese Boats, window frames, saucepans, packaging and insulation, truck beds, car rims, vehicle radiators, barbeque lids. Want to be a PowerScrapper? If you take a few minutes to clean up and separate the metal scraps before you bring them to us, you can get more money for your load. For example, the lid on a barbeque is made of cast aluminum, which is worth more than the barbeque’s steel base. Safety removing the lid with a hammer can add to the total value of the metal that you drop off at one of our centers. Other ways to shift your metal from ‘light dirty’ to ‘clean’ include: removing any bits of plastic, using a pipe cutter to remove sections of copper pipe containing solder, and taking the steel sides and cap off of radiators. For more information about how to clean up and separate your metal scraps, call us. 06 A little scrap goes a long way To give you an idea of how easy it is to collect a decent volume of metal, the following list adds up to approximately 300 pounds.
