It is a blast to be a part of the planning and carrying out of this huge conference! We are still looking for team lead volunteers to help us in Toronto. The position of Merchant Mall Team Lead is still vacant. The job description for this position is on our website at the following link: http://canadianquilter.com/pdf/quilt-canada-2017/QC2017-Job-descriptions.pdf Canada’s Big Quilt Bee It’s official, the Big Quilt Bee has taken the nation by a quilting storm! You simply have to get involved so you don’t miss this incredible opportunity to be a part of something so big for such a great cause! Guilds, stores and quilters across Canada have embraced our Big Quilt Bee to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. We have partnered with Ronald McDonald Houses to make 1,000 quilts for kids staying at the houses. Have you seen the many colourful photos on our Facebook showing the blocks and quilt tops that have already been made across Canada? So far we have 27 guilds who have told us they are committed to making quilts. If your guild is making slabs and quilts but haven’t let us know please drop a quick email to: [email protected] We are encouraging quilters to make blocks and mail them in, but also tops and finished quilts would be so appreciated in helping us reach our goal. Currently, the most common question is: how to deal with completed quilts? Please do not send complete quilts to the Big Quilt Bee. Just keep them and you can send us an email at [email protected] to let us know you have some. Once we have worked out the most efficient delivery arrangements with Ronald McDonald House we will let everyone know by social media and in the magazine how they will be distributed. Keep those photos coming! gmdqg.ca Page 3 GROUSE MOUNTAIN DAY QUILTERS GUILD NEWSLETTER December 2016 Also from CQA comes the following request for submissions. Comfort Quilts - Terry On November 25th, four of us went to a special tea put on by Evergreen House as a thank you for giving them the comfort quilts donations. After tea and some lovely goodies, we met with some of the residents and they talked with us for a while and told us how much the quilts meant to them. At the end we gave one of the old ladies a beautiful butterfly quilt; she asked me if it was hers to keep, I told her it was. The smile that crept onto her face was something we shall always remember - I wish you could have seen it. She held onto it tightly for the rest of the time we were there, and I know it was very special to her and she will treasure it. We also gave them five other quilts to distribute. Best wishes for the festive season. gmdqg.ca Page 5 GROUSE MOUNTAIN DAY QUILTERS GUILD NEWSLETTER December 2016 Library – Jan Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and content 2017. We have one new book in the library. "Quilting Is My Therapy" by Angela Walters. This is an amazing pictorial of stunning quilting. It will leave you in awe, and hopefully inspired! (editor’s comment – if you can’t wait to get your hands on the book, google it and check out the website. I really think the best way to see it is with the book and a comfy chair with a cup of tea, but the website is special too!.) Maybe it can be found. Could somebody please help me locate my big brothers old blanket? It was made especially for him by his grandma from his old discarded clothes and blankets that he used to have when he was younger all made into one. It is very similar to mine as you see in these pics and it will have his name in the corner of it saying made for Gage Fowler by Grandma Marion Mickelsen. We could not find it after we lost him so suddenly in January. I want to locate this for Christmas as it would mean so much to us to have it back with its rightful owners. This would make my Christmas. Maybe somebody has it laying around and doesn't know it but it would be hard to miss if you had it. We miss him so much and would just like to have this back to be a bit close to him again. Cash incentive if it helps. [email protected] if you have information. Editor’s comment. I looked a bit online about this as I did not know where the quilter Marion Mickleson lived. She lives near 100 Mile House and is the premie quilt coordinator for Log Cabin Quilters. In looking online I found 2 websites that display lost quilts and the links are below. The first one shows Karen Johnson’s quilts that were taken from the Vancouver Unitarian Church in October. I guess I was away when it happened because I don’t remember hearing about it. It is really quite shocking. http://lostquilt.com/page/2/ http://lostquilt.com/ gmdqg.ca Page 7 GROUSE MOUNTAIN DAY QUILTERS GUILD NEWSLETTER December 2016 This was on the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild Discussion Group Facebook page and Gigi sent it to me to share with all of you. Enjoy! Twas the night before Christmas, And the quilts were not made. The threads were all tangled, the cookies delayed. The stocking weren't hung, the pantry was bare. The poor weary Quilter, was tearing her hair. Stacks of fat quarters, tipped over in streams. Visions of Log Cabins, had turned into dreams. When what to her wondering eyes should appear, But a bus full of quilters with all of their gear. They went straight to work with just a few mutters, Sorting and stitching and brandishing cutters. The patterns emerged from all of the clutter, Like magic the fabrics arranged in a flutter. Log Cabins, Lone Stars, Flying Geese & Bear Tracks Each quilt was a beauty-even the backs. Her house how it twinkled, her quilts how they glowed. The cookies were baking, the stockings were sewed. Their work was all done, so they folded their frames, And packed up their needles, without giving their names. They boarded the bus, and checked the next address. More quilts to be made, another quilter in distress. She heard one voice echo, as they drove out of sight, Happy quilting to all and to all a good night! ~Author Unknown gmdqg.ca Page 8 GROUSE MOUNTAIN DAY QUILTERS GUILD NEWSLETTER December 2016 These are photos of our 20th anniversary celebrations.
