North America : The parries of the central low lands,
high plains of US and Canada
Eurasia: the steppes from Ukraine through Russia and
magnolia
South America: the pampas of Argentina, Uruguay
and southern brazil
Africa: the veld in the republic of south Africa
Type/ Quality of soil
Mix of rich grasses and forbs, soil here is very fertile,
usually used for agriculture
Rich in nutrients

Symbiotic Relationships
Biotic Factors
Temperate grasslands have a
very moderate diversity of
animals. Simply because they
are flat and do not provide a
lot of shelter.
For Ex. Bison, Pronghorn,
Prairie dogs, Zebras, Coyote,
Badger etc.
Vegetation consists mainly of
perennial grasses and forbs,
meaning they live for years
1. Turf or sod-farming grass
2. Bunch grass-no
underground stems that
produce seeds ( usually
found in drier areas)
• Mutualism: Egrets ( type of bird) feed on parasitic insects
found on a rhinoceros is body, the egret gets food and the
rhinoceros has harmful organisms removed
• Commensalism: Mites use beetles as transport to a food
source, beetle is neither harmed or benefited
• Parasitism: Ticks on a lion, the tick benefits while the lion is
harmed
• Predator-Prey: Lion eats zebra.
Abiotic Factors
•
•
•
Precipitation usually
occurs in the late spring
and early summer, with
an annual 50.8 to 88.9
cm
Temperature ranges
varies across the year
from above 38 degrees
Celsius to – 40 degrees
Celsius
The amount of sunlight
that reaches a
temperate grasslands
depends on the location
Human Impact
•
•
•
•
•
Forest fires
Killing wildlife for resources
Turning land into useable soil for farming
Paving land for roads, city's and towns
Burning fossil fuels causes the grassland areas to change location due to
climate change

What is Unique about Temperate
Grasslands ?
• Grass is the dominant vegetation in this biome
• This biome is considered as a “transitional biome” which
means they are usually found between deserts and forest like
biomes
• Temperate grasslands cover ¼ of the world
• Less than 8% of temperate grasslands are protected
• Temperate grasslands are split into two groups ,Prairie and
Steppes.
• Prairie grasslands have tall grass while Steppe grassland have
short grass
