Welcome/Introductions
Review and prioritize the Best Practices checklist (Key discussion points in order of the
checklist)
- PE Credit: Awarded through DD214 papers and there is an articulation with
Registration and Records
- PE 101 or 105
- ROTC military science training credit
- Veterans do not come in with many credits – Highest could be -higher ranking in the
army maximum of 13 credits
- Most are PE and some military science – usually 3 or 4
- Priority Enrollment: Priority enrollment is only happening at NCSU in the case of students
on track for commissioning. There is a push by UNC-GA. This is not currently supported by
Louis Hunt, due to the # of groups that already have priority registration.
- There are a great deal of groups that have priority enrollment and they do not wish to add
other groups. They would like to eliminate priority enrollment all together.
- Transfer Status: Not automatically considering them as transfers (2 years of active duty) –
creation of contracts that walks through academic plan - Not willing to compromise on the
academic integrity.
- Admission for transfer admission is complicated and waiving the 30 credits like UNCW may
not be likely.
- Financial Aid Contact: Do we need a person in the Financial Aid
- When they are using GI Bill – goes through Holly D.
- When using the FAFSA – not really specific to Military status
- VA scholarship goes between cashiers and Vet Services
- Someone in the back office of financial aid is responsible for assisting with 3rd party
billing
- Office of Admission Contact: Dana Troutman
- Student Affairs Contact: Holly is not in DASA
- Vet Housing: King Village, Wolf Village, Wolf Ridge and Western Manor appear to be key
locations student vets are living.
- We currently have veterans in Wolf Village – We do not market one place to Veterans… Are
they migrating to a specific location? Is there a demand for a village from the veterans?
-
-
-
Can we reframe the best practice recommendation about “military specific on-campus
housing” – There are veterans on the campus but nothing like a village
Vet Lounge: 3115G is the only place that student group has exclusive access. That space
will be lost in May. The new space for SORC in Talley had a vision for student org. space
since inception
Veteran Education Benefits: GI Bill is for 36 months but you have 10 years to use it.
Veterans Orientation: Military Veterans orientation is established – Holly is currently doing
them – Would like to do a breakout session at parent orientation
Identify military-affiliated students on the student data file: Current question on the
application- “Have you served and been discharged?” Can we retrieve the data from the most
recent year of applicants?
We only have data for students using the GI Bill. Otherwise the numbers are underreported
Do we have to make these questions mandatory on the application?
Obtain additional information from Steven White through the NC state residency question
Ombudsman: Identify person in this role.
Core/ General Curriculum & classes on military bases: Leadership in the Public Sector
Membership in SOC is solely because of the Leadership in the Public Sector criteria.
LPS program has done work on Fort Bragg – but not sure if it is on the military base
Cherry point?; 2+2 program
We may need to add someone from DELTA to committee
Dedicated web-presence for military affiliated students: Listen to student needs to put out
information that is needed/ wanted on websites
What is not on the checklist that we need to consider?
- Training & awareness for larger/ broader for faculty/ staff. For example, faculty in
political science may display a lack of sensitivity in discussion on war. Holly does an online
training for faculty and staff. It was suggested that she do provide a training for personnel
connected through the state advisor’s listserve to talk about the GI Bill. A discussion with
this group in May or August was suggested as the ideal time.
- People to add to the committee: Add someone from DELTA, add Amanda Ross-Edwards
Leadership in the Public Sector, add Holly Schwartz
Future Meeting Locations
- April and May meeting will be held in the conference room of Registration and Records.
Holly Danford to arrange.
