Theme: “ABBEY ROAD”
“OCTOPUS’S GARDEN” .................................................................................. Class 301
Although Abbey Road is the Beatle’s eleventh studio album, this is only the second song that Richard
Starkey (Ringo Starr) ever wrote. Inspired by Peter Seller’s ordering fish and chips and getting squid. A
design using water.
“HERE COMES THE SUN” .............................................................................. Class 302
George Harrison relates that the “dopey accountants” at Apple were driving him crazy. So, one day he
escaped to Eric Clapton’s garden and wrote this song with one of Clapton’s acoustic guitars. A vertical
design.
“SHE CAME IN THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW” ..................... Class 303
Paul McCartney says that the song was inspired by groupies who broke into his St. John’s Wood home.
Jessica Samuels said they were bored so they found a ladder and she got in through a partially open
bathroom window. She opened the door and let the others in. A design using two containers.
“COME TOGETHER” ....................................................................................... Class 304
John Lennon’s inspiration from Timothy Leary’s campaign for governor of California (Leary’s campaign
ended abruptly when he went to prison for possession of marijuana).
A design utilizing two containers.
“MAXWELL’S SILVER HAMMER” .............................................................. Class 305
The anvil is play by Mal Evans, the Beatles’ road manager, as seen in the 1970 documentary movie, “Let
It Be” about the Beatles.
A design incorporating metal.
“I WANT YOU (SHE’S SO HEAVY)”.............................................................. Class 306
Unusual for a Beatle song because of its length - almost 8 minutes.
John Lennon wrote this song about his love for Yoko Ono.
A design not exceeding twelve inches in any direction.
“YOU NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY” .................................................... Class 307
Paul McCartney says the song is about his lack of faith in their new Business Manager, Allen
Klein. In fact, McCartney never signed the contract with Klein and this was a key factor in the
Beatle’s breakup.
Your own interpretation.
