St. Gregory the Great
Mission Statement
St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds.
We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling,
we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our
word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the
larger community in which we live.
YEAR OF MERCY WEEKLY ACTION STEP
In the bulletin every week from now until the Feast of Christ the King on Nov. 20, 2016, we will publish in the
bulletin a weekly action step that will help you to live out in a very practical way what the Year of Mercy is all
about. We ask that every day in the week that follows, you look for opportunities to put that action step into
practice.
The action step for this week is: Visit the graves of your ancestors, or visit a local cemetery and walk around
praying for all the souls buried there.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples to pray always without becoming weary, indeed our prayer must
always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world, and especially for the suffering poor. As you
place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no
one to pray for them.
ORDERS OF SERVICE
Do you like the orders of service we have been using for the last nine years? The order of service is the 8-1/2 x 14
folded sheet of paper that we use during our masses. I really appreciate them as they allow me to use music from
multiple sources and allow you to focus on the Mass. If you would be interested, it would involve paying for not
only the paper used for the orders of service but also the Triduum booklets created for Holy Week. The cost for
this is approximately $950 per year. Please contact the Parish Center and ask for Patrick. If you aren’t able to
sponsor the full amount, please let me know the amount you are able to sponsor and I will reduce the amount in
future bulletins articles. Thank you for your consideration!

PARISH TRANSFORMATION UPDATE #4
Our fourth Parish Transformation meeting invited us to reflect upon the first three spiritual
building blocks that every parish needs to be a life-giving parish. A Missionary Spirit, where
we are sent out beyond our perceived boundaries to attend to others in need, was something
we believe we have, and yet, we also believed we could do more, especially in ways of thinking
creatively outside the proverbial box. How are we sensitized to the plight of others that
summon us to missionary action? In the second building block, Evangelization, we talked a lot
about witnessing and listening. How has the Lord touched me in my life, and how do I share
this with others? What is the difference between proselytizing and evangelizing? We concluded that we need to
be evangelized ourselves before we engage in evangelization, to be humbly aware that God is the one who takes
the initiative if only we are open to this touch of grace. We believe our parish community needs more explanation
of the meaning of evangelization and how we can identify and share God’s blessings with others in a way that will
energize us and those with whom we meet. Our third building block, Catechesis, is the lifelong process of
learning the teachings of Christ and his Church in order that one’s relationship with Christ is constantly
renewed by means of evangelization and conversion. Our discussion brought us to an agreement that we need
to find ways of improving faith education for the adults of our parish. In the weeks ahead we will reflect upon
the remaining 4 spiritual building blocks – Prayer and Worship, Call to Holiness, Spiritual Stewardship and
Communion. We ask for your continued prayerful support.
ALL SOULS DAY
On November 2nd the Universal Church celebrates the Feast of All Souls. It is a day when we pray for our beloved
deceased and commend their souls to the mercy of God.
This year, on Wednesday, November 2nd at 7:00p.m. St. Gregory the Great will be holding a special vesper service
to observe this beautiful feast. We will remember especially all of those who have been buried from St. Gregory
during this past year. (If you have lost a loved one during this past year who was not buried from St. Gregory,
and you wish to have him/her remembered, please contact the Parish Center and leave his or her name along with
your own). We hope that it will be a meaningful way to remember the loved one you lost to death during the past
year, and it will strengthen your hope in Christ’s victory over the power of death.
Please plan on joining us to pray for all “those who have gone before us marked by the sign of faith.”

ELECTION 2016
The general election on November 8 offers Illinois residents the opportunity to vote for candidates for U.S.
president, Congress, and the state legislature. The Catholic Church is nonpartisan, and does not endorse
candidates nor tell parishioners which candidates they should elect. The Church does offer guidance for
discernment as parishioners make their decisions on how to vote with a properly formed conscience. The U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops has updated its document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which
may be found at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/index.cfm. The Catholic Conference
of Illinois encourages you to carefully review the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching as you consider
candidates. Go to www.ilcatholic.org. Under the Departments pull down menu, you will find a link to Election
2016.

of Children and Youth staff of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The Healing Garden, located next to Holy Family
Parish, is intended to be a symbol that invites reconciliation, healing, and eventual freedom, not only for
survivors and their families, but also for the larger family of the Catholic Church. All are welcome.

experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through
counseling, material and monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. Return your baby bottle to the Usher’s
Tables the weekend of Nov. 5-6. Thank you for helping to defend life. For more information about The Women’s

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND
Next Sunday, Oct. 23, is World Mission Sunday. World Mission Sunday, organized by the Society of the
Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's
missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the missions
grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are opened because of the growing number of young
men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt,
and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why
the involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from
Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings
to the Propagation of the Faith worldwide. Mission dioceses receive regular annual assistance from the funds
collected. Please be a generous as your means allow in supporting the special collection that will be taken up at
all the Masses next weekend in support of World Mission Sunday. For more information, go to
www.IAmAMissionary.org.
