GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA TRAINING INSTITUTE HYDERABAD COURSE REPORT ON FIRST REFRESHER COURSE IN SEDIMENTARY PETROGRAPHY AND HEAVY MINERAL STUDIES Geological Survey of India, Training Institute conducted the “First refresher course in Sedimentary petrography and heavy mineral studies” from 10th to 19th November 2014. A total of 12 participants attended the training programme, out of which eight officers represented various regions of Geological Survey of India and four officers represented the Dept. of Mining and Geology (DGM), Govt. of Gujarat. Inaugural: The programme was inaugurated on 10th November 2014 at Petrology Division, GSITI, Hyderabad. Dr. V.V. Sesha Sai, Superintending Geologist and core faculty, welcomed the guests and participants and presented the course overview in brief. Shri.L.Harendranath, Deputy Director General, Geological Survey of India, Training Institute, Hyderabad, chaired the inaugural session. He interacted with the participants and discussed the importance of the course; he said it is designed with an integrated approach involving in house lectures, field studies and laboratory studies involving petrographic and heavy mineral studies of sedimentary rocks. Guest of Honour, Dr. P. Hanumantha Reddy, Professor (Retired), Osmania University, Hyderabad, expressed his happiness about conducting such refresher course for the first time by GSI, Training Institute. Shri. B.Nageswaran, Director (CT), GSI, Training Institute, stressed upon the need to enhance the knowledge in the field of Sedimentary petrography and heavy mineral studies since a great part of Indian subcontinent is covered by sedimentary rocks of various geological ages. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Shri. S.N.Mahapatro, Superintending Geologist, Petrology Division, GSITI, Hyderabad. Course Overview : The course was initiated with a lecture by Prof. P. Hanumantha Reddy on the topic “Depositional sedimentary environments; Sedimentary structures and their significance”. He explained about the concept of statistical analyses of grain size data and its significance. Dr. V.V. Sesha Sai, Superintending Geologist, delivered a lecture on “Classification and textures in clastic & non clastic Sedimentary rocks. Textural parameters in ascertaining the maturity of clastic sedimentary rocks - Role of Sedimentary petrography in evaluating a sedimentary basin”. The lecture was followed by a demonstrative and interactive session involving microscopic studies of clastic & non clastic sedimentary rocks, concept of grain size measurement and textural analyses. The trainees were taken to the Petrology and beach sand laboratory at Directorate of Atomic Minerals (AMD), Hyderabad, where they were 1 Dec 2014 exposed to techniques involved in heavy mineral separation and petrographic studies of atomic and rare metals. Dr. V.V. Sesha Sai, Superintending Geologist, delivered a lecture on Sedimentary rocks in Indian Subcontinent with space & time with special emphasis on the Geology of the Proterozoic Cuddapah basin in Eastern Dharwar Craton, SE, India. The field module in the Proterozoic Cuddapah basin from 13th to 15th November 2014 involved (i) Field characterisation of Gulcheru conglomerate horizon and Vempalle dolomite involving study of vertical lithofacies variation and sedimentary structures of Papaghni Group in Tandrapadu-Narnuru section in the western part of Cuddapah basin (ii) Section measurement and field study of Banaganapalle Quartzite-Narji Limestone-Owk shale-Paniam Quartzite sequence in Kalava-Yambayi section, study of sedimentary structures and measurement of foreset dips in cross bedded Banaganapalle sandstone in Ramallakota section for paleo current analyses and (iii) Study of carbonate sequence of Narji limestone in Somayajulapalle-Bethemcherla section and study of Karst topographic features in Narji Limestone at Belum caves, Kolimiguntla. Dr. Shantanu Bhattacharjee, Superintending Geologist, GSI,SR, Hyderabad explained about the methodology of data collection for paleocurrent analyses in field. The trainees were also taken to Brahmagumdem iron ore deposit near Veldurti. The field module was followed by microscopic studies involving petrographic characterisation and textural analyses of the clastic and non-clastic sedimentary rocks that were studied in various sections in the Proterozoic Cuddapah basin around Kurnool area. Dr. M. Burhanuddin, Director (Retd.), GSI delivered lectures on (i) Textural analyses of clastic sedimentary rocks for interpretation of depositional sedimentary environment and (ii) Paleocurrents and basin analyses: A case study of Gondwana sequence from Godavari basin. Dr. V.V. Sesha Sai conducted a practical session on heavy mineral separation by density method that was followed by hands on practice on petrographic studies of heavy mineral grain mounts. The course was concluded by a practical session on “Staining techniques for identification of carbonate minerals in limestone, dolomite and marble” by Dr. V.V. Sesha Sai, Superintending Geologist and core faculty. Valedictory: Shri. S.N.Mahapatro, Superintending Geologist welcomed the guests and participants to the valediction programme held in the afternoon of 19th November 2014 at Petrology Division, GSITI, Hyderabad. Dr. V.V.Sesha Sai presented the course report. Shri. L.Harendranath, Deputy Director General, GSI Training Institute, & Head Mission-V, chaired the valediction programme. He interacted with the participants and critically evaluated the feedback of individual participant to know the benefits derived out of this programme, how they are going to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge gained in their respective annual field programme and their suggestions to further improve the course in future. Shri.L.Harendranath, Deputy Director General and Dr. V. Chandrashekaran, Director & Head of office, Geological Survey of India, Training Institute, Hyderabad distributed the certificates to the participants. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. V.V.
