COLLECTING MAGIC: FROM STAMPS TO WANDS
BE SPELLBOUND BY OVER 100 HARRY POTTER-THEMED STAMPS
AND COLLECTIBLES
Singapore, 1 November 2016 – This year-end holidays, experience the
magic of Harry Potter at the “Collecting Magic: From Stamps to Wands”
exhibition organised by the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM)! Specially
designed for Potter fans, families, and the young-at-heart, SPM’s first-ever
Potter-themed exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection of
1
Harry Potter stamps from all over the world, including Singapore, Taiwan,
Japan, United Kingdom and the United States. Designed with attention to
the finest details, each stamp lets you remember your favourite scenes
and moments from Harry Potter.
Step further into the wizarding world with a selection of movie memorabilia
and collectibles on loan from local collectors. These include items such as
collector’s edition disc set and filmmaking book set. Let your imagination
take flight with familiar scenes and references to Harry Potter while
opportunities for photos and play abound. For example, get ready to go on
a train journey or “fly” like a skilled Quidditch player.
The young ones will be particularly thrilled by the interesting interactive
multimedia exhibits accompanying the exhibition that serve to enhance
your magical experience. These are specially created by a team of
students from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Interactive & Digital Media.
You can wave a wand to see “magic” happen on a screen, watch portraits
that “move”, or uncover “spells” at the unique heat-sensitive stamp display.
Says Ms Tresnawati Prihadi, General Manager of SPM, “The magic of
collecting touches everyone – from the collector to the admirer. There is
delight and joy when you acquire something you love, and share your
collection and experience with others. ‘Collecting Magic: From Stamps To
Wands’ honours this tradition of collecting, particularly in the area of
philately. Postage stamps, alongside community contributed collectibles,
help make the Harry Potter experience more tangible and real for visitors.”
Around the world, children and adults have been captivated by the magic
of Harry Potter. Released from 1997 to 2007, it is the best-selling book
series for children with over 450 million copies sold to date. The books
have been adapted into feature films, role-playing games, and even theme
parks. Philatelic keepsakes such as Harry Potter-themed stamps that show
characters and movie scenes have also been issued by many countries.
This year, there has been a resurgence of Pottermania with the launch of
the play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” in London, and the highly2
anticipated film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, which will be
released in November 2016.
“Collecting Magic: From Stamps to Wands” runs at SPM from 2 November
2016 to June 2017.
Highlights of the exhibition include:

The first Harry Potter stamps from the country of his origin, the United
Kingdom! It is also the only issue to feature book covers. Few books have
rallied children to read as much as the Harry Potter series. This series of
stamps is a fitting and well-designed tribute to J.K. Rowling’s literary
impact.

Size is no measure of strength, as Harry Potter has shown us. The Isle of
Man, an island between England and Northern Ireland, continues its
tradition of producing beautiful stamps. These tiny pieces of paper are
works of art! The attention to detail would please even Professor Snape.
