From the PrincipalDear Parents,
We’ve had a busy month here at Barley Sheaf!
Thank you to Donna Schenkel and all of the volunteers who made the Walkathon this year a successful
event. Although two days of rain required us to hold
the Walkathon in the gym, the children and adults
had a fantastic time together. The students reached
their goal and will get to experience our first “Crazy
Hair Day!”
I would also like to thank our Barley
Sheaf families for the generous donations we received for our Family Game Night baskets. Special
thanks to Debbie Portnoy and her team of volunteers
for all of the hours they put into making Picto Night a
successful event for our families.
Finally, it was
delightful to finally celebrate Halloween with our children again! Thank you all for coming to our festive
parade.
We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming fall
conferences. The conference is a wonderful opportunity to hear how your child is progressing in school
and also a time for parents to share insights with
teachers about their children. Please know that although conferences are scheduled in November, we
encourage your questions and input throughout the
year.
We hope to see you at one of our other upcoming
events. Please refer to the calendar to remind you of
the early dismissal days and the other activities we
have scheduled at the school.
Sincerely,
Karen L. Gabruk
THE BOOK FAIR IS BACK!
The Barley Sheaf PTO-sponsored Scholastic Book
Fair will once again be held in the Barley Sheaf
Library Monday, November 18th through Friday,
November 22nd.. Children will make two visits to
the Book Fair with their class. On the first visit,
they will preview the fair to see what’s available
and write down their desired selections on a Student Wish List. On buying day (their second visit),
parents should return the Student Wish List with
approved books indicated along with payment (the
Wish List will include prices and there is no sales
tax.) The Book Fair will also have evening hours
on Thursday from 6-8pm and Friday from 5-7pm.
Please make checks payable to Barley Sheaf PTO.
When parents are shopping, credit cards will be
accepted.
Thank you in advance for participating in the Book
Fair. This event is a major fundraiser for our PTO
with 25% of sales going directly to our children!
To reduce the spread of germs and illness, we kindly request that children who
are on the absentee list not enter the building.

QUESTIONS YOU MAY WANT TO ASK AT YOUR CONFERENCE
Parent-Teacher Conferences are a perfect opportunity to develop communication with your child’s teacher. As a partner in
this process, please take a moment to reflect on the experiences your child has had at school. Write down any questions that
you may have and bring them to the conference. Here are a few questions that may help to get you started:
 How can I support my child’s learning at home?
 Does my child participate in class?
 What skills will my child be expected to master this year?
 How will my child be evaluated?
 How is my child measuring up to classroom expectation, both academically and socially?
 How much assistance should I give my child in completing homework?

Lost and Found
We are currently in possession of many unclaimed
lunchboxes, shirts, jackets
and other cool weather gear.
Lost items will be located in the front
foyer of the school during conferences.
Please take a moment to see if any of your
child’s belongings are there.
Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.
Share Your Talents!
Emergency Closings
We recognize the abundance of talent in our
teachers and parents, and would like to invite
you to share your talent with the Barley
Sheaf students - as a course instructor! This
unique opportunity will allow you to design
and teach a course this year for our wildly
popular After School Enrichment Program.
What you teach is entirely up to you. The
possibilities are endless!
Some ideas include: science; math; art; drama; computers;
music appreciation; knitting; crafts; photography. More ideas are available. Learning
takes place in many forms. Your course
doesn’t have to be “school-like.” Fun is
good too! Print a proposal form from the
Virtual Backpack.
With temperatures dropping, the likelihood
of a school closing, delayed opening, or
early dismissal increases. Please be sure
that you have discussed and practiced your
plan should school need to close early and
there is no aftercare. Also, please take this
time to plan with your children what action
they will take in the event that you are not
home to meet them.
The school will utilize the school communication system, PowerAnnouncement,
to contact you in the event of an unscheduled early dismissal and other closings or
delayed openings. Please be sure to notify
our school office should your contact information change.
