TREASURER’S REPORT SVT FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS SVT finished the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2009, in good financial health. The worldwide financial crisis did affect both donations and the SVT endowment. However, the organization has taken steps to responsibly manage finances through this period of economic uncertainty. The Financial Highlights are often difficult to interpret because they consolidate financial results from three major and distinct areas. The following table breaks the overall result into its components, which are explained separately below. Financial Highlights Components $ Amount in 000s 2009 2008 Aggregate Increase/(decrease) in Net Assets (955) 120 1) Surplus/(loss) from Operations 1 19 2) Cash flow from Land Transactions (146) 361 3) Change in Endowment value (810) (260) 1) Operations- This area includes total donations and revenue minus salaries, utilities, insurance, stewardship, administration, education and cost of fundraising. In fiscal 2009 operating revenue was significantly less than budget and less than the prior year. Expenses were cut, including a painful salary reduction. Strong year-end financial support from members and donors, combined with the expense reductions, achieved a small surplus in operations. 2) Land Transactions- This area includes funds raised in each year to preserve land, minus total cost of surveys, legal expense, personnel costs and SVT’s share of purchase cost of land parcels. In land transactions, the major financial activity during 2009 was the close on the protection of the Nobscot Property. SVT’s participation was $1.3 million, some of which was raised in the prior year. Resultantly, in fiscal year 2009, outflows exceeded inflows whereas in 2008, inflows exceeded outflows. SVT’s endowment value was impacted negatively by the stock market decline. The endowment performance is consistent with conservative benchmarks and better than many other non-profit organizations. SVT will continue to manage its resources, along with member and supporter contributions, frugally and responsibly while pursuing its mission to preserve and take care of land. This goal, long-ago envisioned by SVT founder Allen Morgan, was achieved in partnership with the town of Sudbury and the Knox Trail Council of the Boy Scouts. Beyond Nobscot, our land protection team successfully completed seven other projects which permanently preserved an additional 295 scenic acres. These achievements represent great success, which is partly why the year was memorable. You can probably guess the other circumstance that caused FY 2009 to go down as memorable year—the economy! As conditions worsened, the Board of Directors battened down our financial hatches. We reduced expenses and solicited special funds to keep our conservation capacities intact throughout the storm. A small fraction of our members did choose not to renew their memberships. On the other hand, quite a few of you actually increased your support of SVT, with the most appreciated explanation, “We thought you might need a little extra this year.” So far, this extra margin of gifts, along with reduced costs, has protected our ability to do the work you want us to do. Thank you! Our Activities Program has risen to new heights. Many outings have had waiting lists. The bird programs were well attended, and the book group continued to grow. We are pleased that so many of you participate in these events. This year past and every year, those of you who volunteer time and energy make a huge contribution to the SVT mission. Whether you keep our trails inviting, lead activities, plan the Benefit, help us at Wolbach Farm, or take time to prepare for and attend meetings of our Board and Committees, you make an enormous difference. One category of volunteers is summer interns. We had an outstanding group this year. One young woman, when asked what she had learned, responded with the following: I learned how much work goes into conservation and how every department has to work together. I will always remember the great work atmosphere at SVT and strive to find similar places. I also learned a great deal by working with volunteers; I really got to work on my communication skills and learned how to give clearer directions. OUR MISSION: Sudbury Valley Trustees is a regional land trust that conserves land and protects wildlife habitat in the Concord, Assabet, and Sudbury river basin for the benefit of present and future generations. ABOUT US: Founded in 1953, Sudbury Valley Trustees is supported today by a membership of approximately 3,600 individuals, families and corporations throughout 36 different towns in the Concord, Assabet and Sudbury river basin. Working in close collaboration with landowners, businesses, local conservation commissions and government agencies, SVT pursues its land protection goals through land acquisition and stewardship, advocacy and education. It means a lot to us veteran adults to have these intelligent, energetic young people involved here at SVT—and it bodes well for next generation of conservation. We hope you know that all our work is made possible by your contributions. Thank you for your membership in SVT. Sincere regards, Stephen Winthrop President Ron McAdow Executive Director The organization currently owns, through gift and purchase, more than 2,100 acres in fifteen communities. In addition, it holds conservation restrictions on more than 900 acres and has been instrumental in preserving several thousand acres now protected by public agencies. SVT is responsible for the protection and care of over 100 properties, which include wetlands, sensitive habitats, trails, open spaces, and major sanctuaries.
