SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2014
FROM JUDY’S DESK…. Every season has its own beauty and autumn is no exception.
Watching the trees turn from a uniform green to all varieties of gold, yellow and red is a
very spectacular experience. How can it be that all this beauty is a sign of death and
decay? With all this beauty there is a certain sadness in knowing that the changing colors
foreshadow winter drawing nearer. Yet between all these changes can we be so fortunate
to have an Indian summer?
Enjoy all the beauty of fall!
GERMAN DAY IN ST LOUIS
Everyone who is paid will have a great German experience on September 10. Our bus
will leave the Waterloo VFW at 8:30 a.m. and from the Columbia Market Place at 8:45
a.m. We are scheduled to return to Waterloo by 4:30 p.m. depending on the late afternoon
traffic.
If you are interested in this trip please call me to see if I have used my complete list of
standbys. All the details were in the previous newsletters.
HANNIBAL
Hannibal was made famous for Mark Twain’s boyish adventures and not much has
changed today. Just who was Mark Twain? This was a pen name belonging to Samuel
Langhorne Clemens, an American author and humorist. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are two of his famous novels. The latter is referred to
as “the Great American Novel.”
In the morning we will tour the Mark Twain Museum District which includes the actual
buildings that inspired Twain scenes in his well-known novels. Other sites will include
Mark Twain’s Boyhood Home, Huckleberry Finn House, J.M. Clemens Justice of the
Peace Office, Grant’s Drug Store and the Museum Gallery.
Our lunch will be enjoyed in the Mark Twain Family Restaurant. Your delicious buffetstyle lunch will feature fried chicken, another meat, potatoes, vegetable, salad, rolls and
blackberry cobbler.
A tour of Hannibal will be aboard a replica of the trolleys that once provided Hannibal’s
transportation. You will see Riverview Park, Molly Brown’s birthplace, Sawyer’s Creek,
the Mark Twain Cave and much more.
Our final visit of the day will be to the elegant Rockcliffe Mansion, site of Twain’s 1902
last Hannibal speech to a crowd of 300 guests in the spacious reception hall built by John
Cruikshank. Rockcliffe was celebrated as one of the finest river estates in America.
This trip will be leaving Waterloo VFW on Thursday, October 23 at 7:30 a.m. and 7:45
a.m. from the Columbia Market Place. Our scheduled time back in Waterloo is around
5:30 p.m. The complete trip cost is $94 and due by September 4.
ROUTE 66, CUBA, AND ST. JAMES WINERY
On Thursday, November 6, at 8:15 a.m. we will depart from the Waterloo VFW and
Columbia Market Place at 8:30 a.m., returning around 5:45 p.m. The complete cost is
$61 and due by Sept 11.
You will travel down Route 66 to Cuba to marvel at their 13 beautiful outdoor murals and
see the world’s largest rocking chair. Lunch will be served at Hick Barbecue and consists
of barbecued chicken, beef, or pork sandwich with a side choice, chips, beverage and
cobbler.
On the way home a stop will be made at St James winery for tasting and shopping. I still
have room for a few more travelers.
A VERY MERRY OLDE CHRISTMAS
Our upcoming Christmas show and meal will begin on Saturday, December 6 with the
bus leaving the Waterloo VFW Hall at 4:30 p.m. and Columbia Market Place at 4:45 p.m.
Our first stop will be viewing the Ways of Lights from the bus drive through and then we

talented singers, actors and musicians performing as you eat your 4-course meal. A cash
bar is also available.
The complete cost is $69.00 per person and due by October 15. Our return home will be
around 10:30 p.m. Limited seating is available.
2015 TRAVEL DATES
You will receive my November – December 2014 newsletter around the end of October
and it will have the itinerary for 2015. As soon as you read and review the dates, you can
call in and reserve a spot on a trip of your interest. Payment is not required until it
becomes announced in a later newsletter in 2015. However, if you sign up please record
on your personal calendar the date of your registered trip and the date the payment is due.
The long trip for April 2015 is almost completed and the first deposit will be due by
January 1, 2015. I do realize several people failed to call early enough this year to be able
to go along to New York so don’t make the same mistake for next year.
If I do not have a completed list for all the single day trips for 2015, I will add them as
soon as I receive the information in 2015. Thanks again for traveling with First National
Bank and keeping the Classic 55 Club so active.
1/2 PRICE MEALS
I will be visiting the nutrition sites for the last ½ price meals of the year. Please sign up at

reservation. The dates of my visits will be:
• September 23 – Waterloo Senior Center – 11:30 a.m.
• October 16 – Millstadt Senior Center – 12:00 noon
• October 28 – Columbia Senior Center – 11:15 a.m.
FINDS FROM THE HERMANN TRIP
As all of you Hermann travelers recall, I stated on the day of the trip that if I found
something on the bus and you failed to take it with you, I would really enjoy it. Now it is
almost 7 weeks later and still no one has called me to make a claim on a left item on the bus.
If you left something on the bus and can completely describe it, I do have it at my desk.
Please rethink if you left something on the bus on July 9th and contact me.
HISTORY OF LABOR DAY
Some say it’s a way of celebrating the end of summer while others sports-minded individuals
say it marks the beginning of football.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, this day is a creation of the labor movement and
is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a
yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and
well-being of our country. Have a great Labor Day.
