About Our Good Friday Tenebrae Service
It began, “In Christ was life, and that life was the light of all.” (John 1:4)
But just thirty-three years later, on a hill just outside the city wall of Jerusalem,
“It was now about the sixth hour; and darkness came over the whole land.”
(Luke 23:44)
For centuries, believers gathered as the sun set on Good Friday. They gathered to recall those
hours of darkness that covered the world at the crucifixion of the Chosen One of God. This
worship service, called Tenebrae from the Latin word for darkness, was a time of quiet reflection.
Light came into the world in the person of Jesus Christ, who was to be scorned, rejected,
scourged and crucified. And so the service was marked by the use of candles, which were
gradually extinguished as the story of Christ’s life and final days was retold.
Those gathering believed in the resurrection. They knew that Jesus was raised from the dead on
the third day. And yet, they found tremendous comfort and deep worship in the simple service
of reading and meditating on Jesus’ last words as the room around them slowly grew darker
and darker. The tradition was that the service would end as the final moments on the cross
were remembered, and then the last candle extinguished. In silence, the worshippers would
leave the church building, not saying a word until they had returned through the front doors of
their homes.
Tonight, we invite you to rediscover the depth of meaning and blessing such an evening brings.
In the growing shadows, listen for the still, small voice that whispers, “I am the light of the
world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John
8:12)

been called “unforgettable” and a “celebrated oboe melody”. Singer Sarah Brightman begged Morricone to allow her to put lyrics to the melody to create her
song, Nella Fantasia.

As we gather here tonight, we come
together to remember that God has led
us from bondage to freedom, and yet,
we led our Savior to the cross. Tonight
Christ asks, “What have I done to
you?”
We gather to remember the mystery of
Jesus’ suffering and death and
wonder, “Is God’s mercy enough for
us?”
God continues to guide us in moments
of darkness; feed us in moments of
hunger; quench us in moments of
thirst. Tonight Christ asks, “What have
I done to you?”
When a kernel of wheat falls to the
ground but does not die, it only
withers; yet if it dies, it produces
many seeds. And still we wonder,
“Is God’s love enough for us?”
Christ had no beauty or majesty to
attract us to Him; nothing in his
appearance that we should desire Him.
He was despised and rejected by
humanity and yet Christ understood
our suffering. Tonight Christ asks,
“What have I done to you?”
God of Mystery and Mercy, help us to
approach the cross that Christ bore for
us; for through His death, He has
redeemed us so that in dying with
Him, we shall also live in Him. And
tonight we ask, “What can I do for
You?”

grieve in remembrance, but not
without hope. May His three hours of
suffering allow us to have hopeful
gratitude so that we can understand
the mystery of your love, and make

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) based this hymn on Galatians 6:14—“God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been
crucified to me, and I to the world.” Many hymnologists believe this to be one of the finest hymns ever written in the English language. Lowell Mason (1792-1872)
arranged this melody in 1825 from a Gregorian change (tone 1) and named it HAMBURG. It was first published in his Boston Handel and Haydn Society Collection of

Ah, Holy Jesus (on page 4)
Ah, Holy Jesus (Herzliebster Jesu) is a German hymn written in 1630 by Johann Heermann and based on Isaiah 53:4 “Surely he has born our griefs and carried
our sorrows; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.” The hymn, originally in 15 stanzas, was published in Breslau, Germany, under
the caption, “The cause of the bitter sufferings of Jesus Christ and consolation from his love and grace.” The tune was composed by Johann Crüger ten years
later specifically for Heermann’s lyrics. The plaintive, mournful hymn has been arranged many times, including settings by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, and
Max Reger.
Lamentations of Jeremiah
The words of the prophet Jeremiah lamenting over the fall of Jerusalem and the temple in 587 B.C. echo the cries of Jesus on the cross while the masses pass
by on their daily routine: O ye people who pass this way, look and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. The musical setting by Z. Randall Stroope
seeks to capture the wide range of emotions felt by the speaker of these words—grief, pain, loneliness, sorrow. This dramatic piece was commissioned by the
Texas Choral Directors Association in 1999.
Were You There (on page 8)
This African American spiritual was born in the adversity of slavery in the southern United States. The first printed version of the song is found in William E.
Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns (1899). John Lovell Jr. in his book Black Song (1972) reflects on the indicting aspect of this song, which implies “If you were there,
what were you doing? How could you have let it [the Crucifixion] happen?”

Veneration of the Cross
The ceremony of venerating the cross on Good Friday was first instituted in Jerusalem, in the 4th century. The “true cross” had recently been discovered, and
the faithful were interested in seeing this precious relic. Accordingly it was displayed every Good Friday, bringing a great number of pilgrims to Jerusalem. It
was about the 7th century that the practice of publicly venerating the cross on Good Friday was introduced into other churches. The respect that is paid to the
cross is actually being offered to Christ Jesus.
Following the Stripping of the Altar, the congregation will be led to the Interfaith Peace Chapel to conclude the service with a time for Veneration of the Cross.
You will be invited to bow your head before the cross, to place a candle around the chancel area, to kneel before or touch the base of the cross, or simply to pass
by in reverence. There is no right or wrong way to participate in this ritual act. You may depart via the side exits or remain for a time of reflection and meditation.
