WEED CONTROL
FOR NEAT FREAKS
GRANITE GR HERBICIDE
®
SEQUENTIAL PROGRAMS BY AIR
n Excellent control of watergrass – early and late – and lilies
n Apply by air
n Wide application window
No other “in-the-water” herbicide controls watergrass (early and late)
better than Granite GR. A “foundation” herbicide, Granite GR also
controls CA arrowhead, ducksalad and Monochoria. Furthermore,
Granite GR provides suppression of smallflower umbrellaplant,
ricefield bulrush, Gregg’s arrowhead, redstem
and rice mimic. The continuous flood provides a
steady suppression of weeds, while optimizing
rice growth. With Granite GR as your “upfront”
herbicide, typically one pass with a ground rig is
all that is needed later on.
Proper Application Timing
There is a wide application window for Granite GR.
It can be applied as early as the 2 ½-leaf stage
of rice (minimum) with weeds in the 1- to 3-leaf
stage. Granite GR is also effective at slightly
later timings – up to the 4-leaf stage. That wide
window can be advantageous when rice is in the
correct stage, but weather conditions preclude
2½-leaf,
application. For example, daytime temperatures
well-pegged
in the low 60s and nighttime temperatures in the
seedling
40s result in slow-growing rice. In that instance,
waiting until temperatures increase will hasten
both rice growth and weed herbicide uptake.
Applications should be made based on stage of rice and not on
“days after seeding”. There can be a significant difference in root
growth between 2-leaf rice and 2½-leaf rice, for example. By waiting
until rice plants are larger, better pegged and growing vigorously,
more weeds will have germinated and be controlled by the herbicide
application.
Land Leveling and Water Management
A level field helps with rice stand establishment, drainage and weed
control. When using Granite GR, where proper water depth is critical to
performance, level fields are vital.
At application of Granite GR, water should be 4-5 inches deep
with a minimum of 3 inches in the shallowest part of the field. Although
Granite GR has no water hold, a static flood of 3-5 inches should be
maintained for at least 7 days to allow herbicide absorption. Holding
water for a total of 14 days is recommended so that weeds continue
to be exposed to the active ingredient. If water is lost from a field, then
slowly add water back in.
Cerano herbicide followed by Granite GR
First, Cerano is applied at, or near, the day of seeding at a
reduced rate of 8 lbs/A (generally lower than when used as
a stand-alone herbicide).
Once rice has recovered from the Cerano application and
is in the 2½- to 3½-leaf stage, Granite GR (at 15 lbs/A) is
applied.
If you have a lot of acres to cover, this program provides
a significant amount of weed control early in the season,
buying you time until propanil timing. In most fields, another
herbicide application won’t be needed until propanil timing.

Bolero herbicide followed by Granite GR
Bolero is applied at the reduced rate of 23.3 lbs/A at the
traditional timing – about 2-leaf rice. Granite GR is applied
when rice reaches the 3- to 3 ½-leaf rice stage.
This “all air” program provides added sprangletop and
smallflower control. Bolero has a 30-day water hold.
GRANITE SC HERBICIDE
CLINCHER CA HERBICIDE
®
®
n Excellent control of watergrass – early and late – and lilies
n Flexible application timing
n Many tank mix options
n Excellent control of watergrass and sprangletop
n Unparalleled crop safety
n Good fit for pinpoint culture
Granite® SC herbicide provides excellent post-emergence
control of watergrass (early and late), ricefield bulrush, redstem,
CA arrowhead, Monochoria, ducksalad and water plantain. It
also provides suppression of Gregg’s arrowhead, smallflower
umbrellaplant and rice mimic.
Granite SC has excellent rice tolerance. Applications can be
made by ground and air. Check label for buffer zones.
In pinpoint situations, Clincher® CA herbicide provides excellent
post-emergence watergrass and sprangletop control and unparalleled crop safety. Applications can be made as early as 1-leaf rice
to drained fields with exposed weeds. Reflooding can take place
within two hours of application.
Even when applied by ground, Clincher has a wide window of
application and works well in cool conditions. By ground, Clincher
can be tank mixed with Granite SC and Grandstand CA.
Late-season applications (30+ days after seeding) provide
control of fully-tillered sprangletop and partial control of
watergrass.
Flexible Timing (for young and older rice)
Early in the season – approximately 20-30 days after seeding
– many weeds are exposed and can be controlled with a single
application. (Extended germination periods or multiple weed
flushes may require an additional treatment using a product with a
different mode of action.)
Granite SC is one of the few herbicides that can be used on
young rice. Applications can be made as early as the 2-leaf stage
of rice and as late as 2-tillered stage of watergrass.
By Air
Clincher Aerial Fly Zones are established in Butte, Glenn, Colusa,
Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Check with your County Ag
Commissioner to determine whether your fields lie within the
boundaries of these areas and are eligible for aerial application.
Tank Mix Flexibility
With a half-million acres of rice comes the potential for numerous
weed combination scenarios. The tank mix flexibility of Granite SC
allows it to be a part of many of those scenarios.
EARLY SEASON (3- to 5-leaf rice stage or approx. 20-30
days after seeding) This application is often the first herbicide
application made for watergrass. Drain fields to get as many
weeds germinated as possible prior to application. Weeds
should be actively-growing. Reflood within 24-48 hours.

LATER SEASON (35-45 days after seeding)
Later-season “clean up” applications (35-45 days after
seeding) target sedges, lilies, watergrass escapes and redberry.
A three-way tank mix of Granite SC, propanil and Grandstand is
effective on late-season watergrass and redberry.
Late season application
Late season application
By Ground
Fields that can be drained and flooded quickly are the best
candidates for Clincher applications. Applications should be made
to weeds that are not stressed due to lack of water.
Growers and custom applicators applying Clincher by ground
in 2013 must complete a certification process. Attendance at the
recent rice meetings held by Dow AgroSciences provided that
certification. If you were unable to attend, you can watch a video at
your local Ag Commissioner’s office.

BENEFITS OF PINPOINT
Granite SC and Clincher CA are an excellent fit in pinpoint culture,
where water is dropped to allow rice to become well-pegged. Even
Granite GR can be effective in a pinpoint program when water can
be brought back on before weeds get too big.
Dropping water offers many other benefits, including:
n warms and oxygenates the soil, significantly aiding in plant establishment (pegging)
n reduces algae and shrimp pressure
n helps with plant stand uniformity in windy conditions
Dropping water also creates ideal conditions for weed growth.
But with the excellent contact ability of Granite SC and Clincher,
weeds are controlled at this early stage so that rice can grow
without weed competition.
Grandstand® CA herbicide provides excellent post-emergence
control of redberry. For this weed, there is no more effective
product available.
Grandstand can be applied aerially and by ground and is an
excellent tank mix partner with propanil and Granite SC. The
combination of Grandstand and propanil has shown increased
activity on ricefield bulrush.
An SLN (24c) label allows reduced aerial buffer zones when
applying Grandstand at a ½-pint rate. For sensitive crops –
including all vegetable crops, all tree and vine crops and all other
broadleaf crops – the “wind away” buffer zone is 200 feet and the
“wind towards” buffer zone is ¼ mile.
NEW RATE RECOMMENDATION: For more than a decade,
the rate recommendation was 4-8 oz/A. The recommendation
now is 6-8 oz/A. Why the increase in the low end? Resistance
management. Repeatedly using “just enough” of a herbicide
has the potential to let resistant biotypes thrive and potentially
dominate a field. Increasing the rate maintains the product’s
effectiveness as well as increasing the shelf life of the herbicide.
