Activity: Who Eats Whom?
Procedures
1. Color each organism on the “Food Web cutout” sheet.
2. Cut out each organism from the “Food Web cutout” sheet
3. Identify each organism as:
a. Producers
b. Primary consumer
c. Secondary consumer
d. Tertiary consumer
e. Decomposer
4. Color-code each group. For example, if the grass and flower are both producers, then they should be
given the same background/highlight color. Create a key.
5. Arrange the organisms into your notebook. No specific arrangement is needed.
6. Add ALL possible arrows to indicate the direction of energy-flow.
a. Reminder: ORGANISM A ---- is eaten by ----> ORGANISM B
b. Example: chicken  human
c. Color the arrows by assigning a color for each energy-flow:
i.  Primary Consumer
ii.  Secondary Consumer
iii.  Tertiary Consumer
iv.  Decomposer
7. Circle one organism. On a separate sheet of paper, write one paragraph that discusses how the removal of
that circled organism will affect the biodiversity of the ecosystem.
If the ______ was removed from the food web then the biodiversity of the ecosystem would
(increase/decrease). For example, … (provide concrete examples from your food web that validate your
claim).
