Providence caregivers unite
to make a dream come true
Born with spina bifida, Felix, an
eight-year-old from Lacey, wasn’t
able to walk for half his life.
Spina bifida is a birth defect in
which a developing baby’s spinal
cord fails to develop properly. He
participated in intensive physical
therapy which helped him learn to
walk but he still had weakness in
his lower extremities. Activities like
riding bikes with his older sisters
were very difficult because his right
leg turned inward.
“All he wants is to ride his bike
with his siblings,” said Felix’s
mother, Heather.
Thanks to the generosity of
countless Southwest Region
caregivers at Providence Regional
Cancer System – RadiantCare
Radiation Oncology (PRCS), and
other providers outside of PRCS,
enough funds were raised through
the Adopt-A-Family program to
purchase a special AmTryke, a
$1,200 therapeutic tricycle for
people with disabilities. More
than $1,600 was raised in less
than five days; the excess funds
were donated to the Providence St.
Peter Foundation.
Felix and his mom, Heather
“Helping him do things other kids
do means so much to us,” said
Heather. “This is a pure blessing.
Thank you so much to everyone who
donated and helped our family.”
“Those that lead the project and
those that donated felt in their
hearts that this was the right thing
to do,” said Marissa Austin, RN,
BSN, clinic nursing supervisor at
Providence Regional Cancer System.
“Every child deserves a bike.”
PRCS Director of Oncology Operations
Ann Monaghan and Felix
“All he wants is to ride his bike with his siblings,”
said Felix’s mother, Heather.

A legacy of caring continues –
22 years later
Alvin and Evelyn Thompson
In 1994, Alvin and Evelyn
Thompson created a charitable
remainder unitrust with parcels
of vacant land. While both
Thompsons have since passed
away, the legacy they created and
directed funds to, still helps those
in need today at the Providence St.
Peter Sunshine House.
Anyone can make a planned
gift to the Providence St. Peter
Foundation. In fact, planned
giving can provide substantial
tax benefits such as avoidance
of capital gains, immediate
deductions and income for the rest
of your life. For many, it is also a
way to assure their impact on our
community lives on, through the
work of an organization that meant
so much to them.
The Sunshine House, located on
the Providence St. Peter campus
since 1987, is a “home away from
home” for people with critically
ill family members who need
to be close to the hospital for
extended treatments. Because of
the Thompson’s gift, the Sunshine
House now has funding for capital
improvements that will provide
additional comforts and amenities
to patients and their families in
need, as well as provide upgrades
that will provide substantial cost
savings for years to come.
A legacy gift of real estate, or other
appreciated assets no matter how
large or small, can significantly
enhance our ability to provide
compassionate services to people
in need - just like the Thompson’s
planned gift in 1994. We continue
to give thanks to the Thompsons
for creating a legacy of caring that
lives on.

Gifts enable Foundation to award more than
$582,000 during spring and fall 2015 grant cycles
In the last
14 years, the
Foundation
has distributed
more than $30
million to further
the mission of
compassionate
care for the poor
and vulnerable
in our local
communities.
Thanks to charitable gifts from generous
individuals, businesses and organizations,
the Providence St. Peter Foundation Board
approved more than $582,000 in grant
awards during spring and fall of 2015.
These funds make many programs
and enhanced patient services possible.
A sampling of grant awards includes
equipment for interventional radiology,
pathology, in-patient rehab and neuro
therapy, and support for Providence
Regional Cancer Services, Mother Joseph
Care Center and Providence Medical
Group’s Geriatric Center of Excellence.
The Foundation also continues to provide
2
the Music Thanatology program, a
specialized therapy that aids patients with
serious illness and those at end-of-life.
Other grant awards will benefit many
departments and programs including:
• Nursing education
• Spiritual care
• Long-term care, home health and hospice
• NODA (No One Dies Alone)
• Providence Animal-Assisted Activities
& Therapy Programs (PAAA/T)
In the last 14 years, the Foundation has
distributed more than $30 million to further
the mission of compassionate care for the poor
and vulnerable in our local communities.

Prepare for the unexpected:
Advance Care Planning
At the end of life, or during critical
illnesses, patients are often unable
to make important medical care
decisions. This places a heavy
responsibility and burden on
families, as well as health care
providers. However, the burden
can be alleviated through advance
care planning, the process in which
individuals make deliberate decisions,
in advance about their health care
preferences and who will make
decisions for them if they become
unable to speak for themselves.

Through generous donor funding,
Providence has launched a
coordinated effort to meet this
need by creating an Advance Care
Planning program in Southwest
Washington. In collaboration
with Providence Health and
Services both in Washington and
other states, Honoring Choices
Pacific Northwest—a resource
in Washington for advance care
planning and local community
partners, will provide patients and
their families the opportunity to
discuss their health care wishes in
advance of critical illness or final
days of life.
Advance care planning has
recently emerged as an area
of great need. “The process
of holding conversations with
patients to identify the care they
want in advance of need promotes
compassionate care,” says Dr. Scott
Tibbits, one of the program’s medical
champions. “It also improves health
care experiences for patients and
families, as well as for providers.”
Medrice Coluccio, chief executive
of Providence Health and Services
in Southwest Washington, believes
this program is a critical step toward
improving critical illness and endof-life care. “These are very difficult
conversations, even under the best of
circumstances,” she says. “But if we,
as caregivers, can learn to navigate
these discussions, we can remove a
major difficulty that many families
face, especially during the final days
of life.”

Success
for outpatient palliative care
On May 19, 2015 the Outpatient Palliative Care
Clinic opened two weeks ahead of schedule. Initially
borrowing exam room space in the emergency center
at St. Peter Hospital, it quickly expanded and moved
services to the East Olympia Family Practice on Lilly
Road. The Clinic anticipates moving to a permanent
location in south Lacey towards the end of 2016 to
further expand its outpatient palliative care services.
The clinic has been enormously successful, providing
outpatient services to 70 new patients and their
families, which represents a 119 percent increase from
anticipated caseloads. When it opened in May 2015,
the clinic provided two half-days of service and within
five months of operation, service increased to two fulldays of service each week. It will soon expand to three
full-days per week and we anticipate increasing to four
or five full-days by the middle of 2017.
In addition to direct client services, there has been
an increased understanding of palliative care among
community and Providence providers, in part through
our nurse navigators’ one-on-one sessions with other
care providers, educating them as to the difference
between palliative care and hospice care and clarifying
the when, where, and how of palliative care.
The program has also made an impact in helping
providers broach conversations with patients, which
can be challenging. Efforts to help caregivers initiate
these conversations will continue, to help improve
our ability to provide patients and their families the
opportunity to plan their end of life care before they
become gravely ill and require hospice. In addition,
members of the clinic team have been invited to
present at a number of community events, reflecting
an increasing awareness and interest in palliative care
within the community.
In just one year, far more has been accomplished
than anticipated, positively impacting the lives of
our patients and their families who seek outpatient
palliative care services. This clinic’s significant growth
demonstrates the value it brings to our patients and
care providers. As the only comprehensive multidisciplinary outpatient palliative care clinic in
Southwest Washington, we – with our donors’ support
– are making significant and positive impacts on
improving the lives of others in our communities.
We are grateful to those who have made this clinic
possible, and for the caregivers who are making a
positive and compassionate difference in the lives of
families every day.
The clinic has been enormously successful, providing outpatient services
to 70 new patients and their families, which represents a 119 percent
increase from anticipated caseloads.

2016 Christmas Forest
set for Nov. 30 – Dec. 4
Christmas Forest is one of Southwest Washington’s most honored
traditions. This five-day holiday fundraiser offers a chance for the
community to enjoy a festive display of Christmas trees and wreaths,
created by Thurston County’s most talented designers.
Attend one of the special events to help get into the holiday spirit, or drop
by the Christmas Forest Gift Shop to stock up on unique and special
holiday gifts and décor.
Leading the way
Kevin and Tammi Schreiner are returning once again as Christmas Forest
co-chairs. Kevin, who has served on the Providence St. Peter Foundation
Board of Directors since 2010, says he is very pleased to be able to
participate in such a central role for another year.
“Tammi and I are looking forward to another fantastic year of chairing
the Christmas Forest. It was so rewarding last year to see how much time
and effort so many people put into this event to make it such a smashing
success, all to benefit our community. We felt that the tree and wreath
designers did an especially phenomenal job in 2015 and we can’t wait to see
what they come up with this year.”
Want to get involved? We need:
• Sponsors. This event relies on generous businesses and individuals to
sponsor the trees, wreaths, and specialty items that make Christmas
Forest possible.
• Designers. Our region’s most creative individuals and design teams
contribute their talent to create the trees and wreaths that make the
event magical.
• Auction items and packages. Volunteers help our event team secure
the great auction items and packages that raise vital funds.
• Skilled maintenance people. Volunteers who are good with power
tools help make set-up and tear-down days go smoothly.
If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Stacey
Genzlinger, Special Events Manager, at Stacey.Genzlinger@
providence.org or (360) 493-7985.

A Message from the Foundation President
Your support of Providence St.
Peter Foundation continues to
change lives for the better. We
continually work to support
compassionate health care in our
community, and I am grateful
to be a part of the Foundation’s
mission to assure quality health
care is available in the communities
we serve, especially programs
serving the poor and vulnerable.
2015 Foundation Financial Results
We continue to be incredibly
mission-driven and look for ways
to improve the mental health care
challenges that our underserved
populations face. I am proud to
say that through the generosity
of others, a critical health care
initiative is underway. The
Community Care Center will serve
the most stigmatized individuals,
especially those with mental health
and substance abuse challenges, by
providing them with a single point
of access for treatment, housing
and many other services.
On behalf of the Foundation
Board, thank you for your ongoing
support of the Providence St.
Peter Foundation. I look forward
to developing partnerships and
building upon our successes,
so that access to high-quality,
excellent health care is available
to those most in need in our
community. We are honored and
inspired by your support.
It is because of you and others in
this generous community that the
Providence St. Peter Foundation
has funds to allocate to important
causes such as the Community
Care Center and other programs
previously developed to help those
in need. On the following pages
of this Cornerstone issue, you
will see the names of individuals
and organizations who were a
part of our mission to help the
underserved in 2015 – we are
so thankful to you. We are also
thankful to those who have
supported us at any point in time,
