(2 sentences) • As con=nents driS, environments change and organisms have to adapt to their new environments. Over =me, they evolve. Ques=ons we are exploring today! • What are some other ways that the Earth Changes and cause adapta=on and evolu=on? Rocks and Uniformitarianism Rocks are formed and reformed through the same process for millions of years. This is a great example of uniformitarianism. We can study rocks to understand how Earth has changed over =me and influenced evolu=on. There are three types of rocks: 1. Igneous Rock– formed when melted rocks (magma) cool 2. Sedimentary Rock— formed when =ny par=cles or rocks from erosion pack together and create layers 3. Metamorphic Rock forms when put under pressure and is near heat The Rock Cycle is a process where different rocks are formed through mel=ng, cooling, and pressure. The Rock Cycle changes the Earth and its environments. Studying rocks give us clues for how Earth has changed and how organisms evolved. The different forces in the Rock Cycle: 1. MelBng—melted rock makes magma 2. Volcanic AcBvity—when magma pushes out of the surface, it forms lava and hardens into igneous rock 3. Erosion—wind and water can break rocks into smaller par=cles 4. DeposiBon—rock par=cles can se_le in new places 5. CompacBon—pressure can pack rocks into layers, making sedimentary rock 6. Heat and Pressure—heat with pressure can start to change rock layers into metamorphic rock Today’s RotaBons 1. CollaboraBve: Rock Cycle Notes and Games 2. Independent: Rock Cycle Interac=ve Teacher Led (Whole Group) —0 —Raise your hand for the teacher to call on you. DO NOT Blurt or shout over someone else. Rock Cycle Game ObjecBve: In this ac=vity, you will be a rock par=cle to see how different forces can change you into a different form of rock. Materials • Dice (1 per sta=on) • 5 sta=ons (Magma, Igneous, Sedimentary, Sediment, Metamorphic) Rock Cycle Game DirecBons 1. Each of you will be a rock and will roll the dice at your table 2. Based on what you get on your roll, you will either stay at your sta=on or move to another sta=on to “transform” into another rock. 3. Make sure you record what happens to you each =me you roll! 4.
