1917 Russian leadership – during WWI, Czar Nicholas II did a terrible job of ruling Russia. While he led the war, his wife Alexandra made Russia’s decisions. Grigori Rasputin – an uneducated holy man from Siberia that had great influence over Alexandra. The “Mad Monk” The March Revolution 1917– after the government began bread rationing, working class women led a strike which shut down factories. On March 15, the czar abdicated and a temporary government was set up. The Bolsheviks – were a soviet party dedicated to revolution. Led by V.I. Lenin. Their slogan was “Peace, Land, Bread” Bolshevik Revolution - November 7, 1917, Bolshevik forces seize the Winter Palace, overthrowing the provisional government. After a civil war, the Communists were in charge by 1921. Peace, Land, Bread 1918 – Lenin signed a treaty with Germany, surrendering Russia from the war. Communists – new name for Lenin’s Bolshevik’s. 1921 – the Communists have complete control of Russia after defeating their rivals in Russia.
