NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2010
Stay cool!
Dear cyclists,
These months are the hottest of the year. Therefore a
little advice from our side. If you are going for a ride, not
only bring your camelback to stay hydrated, but also put
an extra bottle of (ice)water on your bike. At the moment
you need it the most you can splash it in your face and on
to your head to cool down.

TRAIL OF THE MONTH
This month we picked an easy ride for beginners, the ones who are not that used to extreme rides or
take it just as a nice cooling down route.
Start: Kaya Grandi, Kralendijk.
Follow the paved road in direction of the airport. Just behind the airport, in front of Donkey Beach
turn left to the dirt road at the sign ‘Donkey Sanctuary’. Follow this road all the way straight until
the first cross point. Turn right and follow this dirt road, after a while you will see the Riding Academy Club on your right side, the road turns left. Follow this road until you see the windmill and the
paved road, Kaya Niki Boko Zuid. On the paved road turn left and follow this in direction of Kralendijk.
Bike Mechanic’s Advice
Flat tires
Bonaire and flat tires
If it is with a car, motorcycle or bicycle, we always have problems with flat tires.
How to fix this problem?
It is a problem we can’t fix. We live on a cactus island.
But we can fix the flat tubes.
Use tire levers to get the tube out of the tire (don’t use a screwdriver of something like that, it is to sharp)
Pump the tube full of air until it’s completely inflated. Don’t be afraid, pump it
up.
Check the tube in water so that you can see the air bubbles. Mark the hole or
holes with a pen very clearly.
Clean the tube on that place were the holes are with fine sandpaper , but don’t
scratch the tube. After cleaning don’t touch the tube with the glue with your
fingers.
Put a minimum of glue on the tube and let it dry for 10 minutes. The thinner
the glue the better.
Put the patch with a little pressure on the tube.
Pump the tube up with air and check your work.
If there is no leak anymore, put the tube back into the tire and check if
the valve is straight in the rim.
Close the tire with your hands and not with the tire levers, the chance
that you damage the tube again is very high.
Check if the tire fits in the rim and pump the tube with a maximum of
pressure.
Another solution: You can always bring your bicycle to De Freewieler.

JUMPING: You never want to pedal all the way up to the takeoff. If
you do, your body will be off balance when you leave the jump. Stop
pedaling at least 10 feat before the jump.
BRAKING: Your front brake is very important. This brake is the
only one that can stop or slow you on a steep descent.
BRAKING: If you need to use your brakes, do it gingerly.
You will be amazed how much faster you can rail a corner if you
relax and don’t touch the brakes.
CLIMBING: Aerodynamics is less important when climbing because
you’re going slowly, so sit up a little higher.
CLIMBING: Do not quit if the rear tire spins. Simply raise your
torso (push away from the bar) to weight the rear tire and keep
pedaling.
CLIMBING: If you do lots of long climbs, be sure you allow yourself
to recover. Include weekly rides with flat terrain or rolling
hills that allow you to spin.
DOWNHILL: don’t lock the brakes. keep you wheels rolling at all
times so you can steer past unanticipated hazards.
DOWNHILL: There is no honor lost in walking a section that you
aren’t up to trying.
DOWNHILL: The key while descending is to stay centered on the
bike between the wheels while standing.
RIDING ROCKS: Be creative, especially if you ride a dual-suspension
bike. Too many expert riders waste time picking lines around
rocks or simply follow the most well-worn line.
